For those wondering whether or not the isometric variant of Nethack, dubbed Falcon's Eye, is dead or not, Jaakko Peltonen has replied to an rec.games.roguelike.nethack thread on the subject.

Falcon's Eye is certainly not dead. :) I have been concentrating
on another project, a role-playing game remake called Ultima IV:
The Dawn of Virtue. It is a very exciting, large and complex
project and has taken much of my time, so I haven't been able to
work on Falcon's Eye as much as previously.

Still, work has been done on the next version of Falcon's Eye.
There will be new graphics, features, bug fixes, and hopefully
also improved compatibility. Even though the website has not
been updated in a while, I continue to frequent the forums, so
they're a good place for the latest news and discussion.

My intention is to complete the next version of Falcon's Eye
shortly after we've completed a playable demo of Ultima IV:
The Dawn of Virtue. I hope that will be very soon now.

So, there you have it. Falcon's Eye hasn't been abandoned by the author.

Nethack with graphics? That's pretty fucking pointless. It's been done, it's called diablo.

Diablo is far from it

Nethack got more focus on explore, and death is dead (most of the times)

and its free

not that I'm playing Falcons Eye nor nethack or Diablo - but anyway. never even tried FE.

Diablo make have had a good deal of Nethack influences, like random levels, hack and slash gameplay, and so forth. I wouldn't say that Falcon's Eye is anything close to Diablo, since it's a straight up port of Nethack with an isometric engine and a more friendly GUI. Everything about Nethack you'd expect is in Falcon's Eye.
