Ever since finding the top 70 list of RPGs and seeing Fallout 1 and 2 at the top I couldn't understand how a game this boring, with just a few quests, bad interface, and only a handful of interesting characters was so beloved by cRPG fans.
I love PS:T, BG and Arcania. These games have stories that suck me in and I want to learn more about their settings.
Only recently did I understand why in my opinion Fallout is such a bad game.
It's because I played it for the first time after I played Fallout 4 for 200 hours and Fallout NV for an equal amount of time.
By the time I got to Fallout 1 it's setting was so well-known and boring like the generic orcs, elves and dragons fantasy setting to me.
After leaving vault 13 there was no mystery, no surprises. I had to literally force myself to play through Fallout 1 and I have nothing left to play Fallout 2 past the starting village.
So to me, Fallout 4 was the game I played first, it was the game that introduced the setting to me. I played it A LOT, read all the terminal stories, the events that lead up to the war, etc.
Because of that, in my mind, Fallout 4 is and will be the best Fallout game. It is the game I associate the exploration of an unknown setting to. Gameplay and graphics are better, story with the DLCs too. So there you go, Fallout 4 is the best Fallout game to me
