I do wonder if I think New Vegas is good on it's own merits.. or just because Fallout 3 was so terrible that my brain needed something to latch on to - in order to stave off the crippling depression.

Yes it is definitely true. Fallout 3 fixed a ton of mistakes Interplay did. Like the retarded skill system where only 3 or 4 skills saw any regular usage in most games and character types. In Fallout 3 every single skill can be useful, regularly, for most of the game. Repair and Science are must have skills instead of "eeeeh, we just put those there to pretend to have a deep skill system, outside of 2-3 quests they don't really do anything...".

Fallout 1 and 2 are so overrated here it is not even funny. They were just "good" RPGs for 1997 and 1998 standards. They rapidly became obsolete. You can only remain oblivious to their faults if you refuse to adapt to the 21st century and keep gaming on a Windows 95 pc with a Pentium 90 cpu and an S3 Virge card. Seriously...

Couldn't bother with that stupid video as it is usually the "making excuses" type which you can find loads off on Youtube. "See Fallout 3 isn't bad, Bethesda saved the franchise" Ugh!.
It may have expanded the use of skills more but but the rest of the game's design philosophy remained mostly "Shoot & Loot".

I think it could be better said "Fallout New Vegas is good despite Fallout 3's bad foundation it had to be build on."

I will agree on one thing: During the later years, Interplay was no better than Bethesda.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you on that one. I don't even recall most of the releases Interplay brought out near the end other than that I was really disappointed as before that I had bought quite some Iplay games.
For me they were next to Lucasarts (sorry, I did not check out Origin or Westwood games out at the time).

This video explains why people get hyped up and buy the new Assassin's Creed or Far Cry every year.

Apparently if there's new assets and a clear change of setting it's a new, exciting game that needs to be re-bought but if a game comes out with an entirely different design approach, but happens to use similar assets it's an "add-on"

It's the reason the die hard Bethesda fans don't like New Vegas. They see it like the guy in the video, just another Bethesda game by a different developer so they get to work exploring every inch of the world, scavenging, taking things back to their base and attempting to make their own fun. They get frustrated that the game is far more faction/quest based.
