Oh that's an excellent idea, maybe Gothic 2 gold. I think I recall that being one of the hardest ones in the series. I'd love to see him one shotted by a young wolf just outside Xardas tower.

Its not your responsibility. The CRPGs of yore should have been ported to consoles back when FF 7 was selling millions or ported to the 360 as arcade games in 06. I just played Arcanum for the first time. I'm about 70% finished. Personally I didn't see it as being complicated or difficult but It does feel old and thats the hurdle. If the game was released with graphics update and some PS 3 and Xbox Live hype people would buy it. It would probably sell half as well as it did when it was released. Thats not millions but it does temper the gamer gene pool.

Just think. When Fable and KOTOR were relased on the Xbox people were questioning if you could sell non-TB RPGs on consoles.

Even today look at the 360's TB RPGs that have outsold every Troika game. http://www.vgchartz.com/games/index...oxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort=

Gothic 2 NOTR seconded.

Another option could be Deus Ex, even if it's in an entirely different league than FO. Arcanum might hit a little too hard with the broken combat and excess grind.

No, it was NWN.
I'm sure he rated BG2 at 98 or 99% but I can't find that list.

I did find an awesome thread in which he used Daggerfall to prove that Oblivion and FO3 are shit.

A few disclaimers before we get started. I made a point to patch my copy of the game to version 1.02, which is an official release. I am not, at this time, going to use any custom patches, mods, or hacks so that my first experience with the game is pure and untainted in any way.

You should've made him install the basic fixes patch.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's different enough from Fallout to keep him entertained and also shows that there are RPGs without elves and dragons.

Should've started out with Bloodlines or Deus Ex.

He loved and beat Deus Ex, that's kind of how I tricked him into this challenge. Bloodlines? Hell no, that game turned into a complete shit fest.

You might have a point about the setting. I wanted to like Bloodlines, it started out great but fell apart about midway through the story. Also, I don't recall it being very difficult at all. I want him to suffer some.

He's never going to finish this game, and if he is he'll start hating it by the time he reaches New Reno. Couldn't you have picked a shorter RPG to begin with, like ToEE or the first Fallout?

Today I found myself arguing against the merits of RPG games. Spells, dragons, wizards, hit points, and the like.

:rage:

And yes, I agree with the previous poster. Fallout 1 is not only a better game, but shorter, more accessible, and actually coherent in its setting. I mean, tons of quests in FO2 are of the bullshit "find for me 10 gecko pelts!" variety. Not the best representation of the RPG genre as a whole, don't ya think? Might just reinforce those stereotypes he has, except for instead of collecting mushrooms or dragon scales, he's collecting irradiated gecko pelts :?

It's almost sad to see him confused about finding Vic in Klamath. It's as if he can't accept the concept that sometimes you could be given false information, or (God forbid) someone could lie to you. I guess it only makes sense though in this day and age, when everything you're told in a game leads you directly to where you need to go.

I wonder how long he'll dick around in Klamath before he decides to try the next town.

Also someone should link to this thread in the blog comments.

Ok lets take a look at the TB and RT pause games that outsold Troika's best seller. This is just one platform
Eternal Sonata
Tales of Vesparia
Blue Dragon
Infinite Undiscovery (stupid ass title)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Last Remnant
Lost Odyssey
Final Fantasy XIII
Dragon Age

In retrospect you're probably right but I've done FO2 close to a dozen times vs twice for FO1. I always liked FO2 more because of the larger variety of things you could do. He'll get through this though. Just because I told him there's no way in hell he can make it, he'll do it out of spite. What I need to figure out is what to hit him with next so as not to break him completely.

Very interesting read! I forgot about a lot of the stuff in Klamath since it's been so long since I played. I really have gotten fucked over by newer games spelling everything out, I didn't bat an eye when I didn't find Vic, that was to be expected at the time, though I can see how a casual gamer would be waiting for new quest compasses and entries yelling which way to go now. You actually had to interview people to figure out were to go.

Also, the key to the rat infested area of Klamath has an amazing amount of choices to get in. I typically had lockpick so I would just get in that way, but still, nice stuff.

That's what I always liked about FO2, despite all the stupid shit put in and a quasi-retard story line, there was so many approaches to shit and so many things to do. You could completely fuck up quests, but so what you can do it your way. Was it realistic killing everyone in Vault City? No, but you could still do it even though it would mess up quests in Gecko, New Reno, and NCR. Same goes for New Reno, for example the wright murder, you can just point out someone and no red flags shoot up telling you you're wrong and you still got XP (personally, I wouldn't have rewarded more points for getting the correct choice, perhaps xp for finding out the truth, but not for directly pointing out the correct asnwer.)

Don't get me wrong, Fallout 2 is an incredible game, but I always found it vastly inferior to its predecessor.

Fallout 1: Short and sweet, consistent all the way through. Absolutely brutal atmosphere.

Fallout 2: Long, with intermittent bursts of excellence. The parts that aren't excellent however, are pretty damn boring, and register on a "standard diablo clone" level of depth. This game's atmosphere is very similar to the first game's, though quite diluted with some lulzy and improbable settings (Arroyo and New Reno specifically)... Not to mention the overabundance of monty python references and the sudden tone shift about 3/4th's through. Talk about ADD developers.

Some might prefer FO2 for its length and variety, others, like me, opt for the succinctness of the first game.

Either way, it's sure to prove a challenge and an eye opener for someone weaned on recent mainstream titles!

Make him try Ultima VII. When I had my 10 year old brother try the games, Ultima VII was the only one he liked.

That's too much work to setup. He's in another state and if I tried to walk him through getting that running (even with Exult) he'd probably put his eye out or set his house on fire. Needs to be a win based installer or something on GOG.com with a dosbox wrapper.

You do realize DosBox doesn't need to be installed to run? Install it yourself, install U7, set everything up, archive it, email him the archive. I'm assuming he can unpack an archive and double-click a shortcut? ;)

Then again U7 will probably turn him off because teh grafix are old...
