Even though Jay "Rampant Coyote" Barnson has been blogging about the sequel to his humorous turn-based first-person RPG Frayed Knights for a while already, it has only now been finally officially announced, under the title of Frayed Knights 2: Khan of Wrath. IndieRPGs.com offers a nice summary:

FK2:KoW is being built from the ground up in Unity, so unlike the first episode, this one should run on Mac and Linux as well as Windows. It looks like Jay Barnson took some of the UI criticisms he received after the first episode to heart, as he has completely redesigned the user interface for episode 2. Given that the interface was 40% of everything that bothered me about the first episode, I find this to be a most welcome development.

The party roster will be expanded this time around, with support for six characters instead of just four (though you’ll still be able to import your characters from the first episode). There have been some changes to the game’s underlying rules, balancing changes to various feats, and the inclusion of a new “dynamic spells” system that will complement the original game’s stable of “fixed spells.”

Rampant Coyote's blog has a more detailed Q&A. Here's a quote:

Q: What’s the level range will Khan of Wrath?

A: Right now, we’re targeting level 10 through around level 20, though you may be able to progress a little above that.

Q: Wait, did you say six characters?

A: Yes, yes I did.

Q: Who else do you play in the game, besides Arianna, Benjamin, Chloe, and Dirk?

A: Someone who’s name begins with an E. And someone who’s name begins with an F. And one with a G. And one with an H. Possibly others, but we’re not promising anything beyond that.

Q: So when’s the Khan of Wrath going to be released?

A: Alas, it’s not happening this year. But we hope to be in serious testing by the end of the year. I was really pushing for that, but real life conspired to kick me about six months behind schedule. It’s the trouble that comes with being a part-time indie.

I, for one, welcome the increase in party size.

Meh, I thought the title was cute. Besides, it's probably literal. You probably fight or seek out the Khan of Wrath. I dunno, it's not like the first game's title was any more high brow or that the game's writing wasn't goofy. I'd imagine this will be more of the same in that department.

I guess I don't fully understand the title and why that is so interesting.

I didn't like the first game. The cutesy humor didn't grab me and the encounters felt like random padding.

To each his own. For example, I don't really like Dune series, but I'm reading it because some things just should be experienced.

The humour/writting in the first game was a big "no" for me, was like trying to play a game with Felicia Day, Boxxy, Nostalgia Critic and Angry Joe narrating it...

Did you actually play it? I at first thought the humor was going to be a big turn off, but it wasn't that abrasive. The combat and exploration will keep you busy.

No, at $19,90 I decided to first see a LP, and didn't liked what I see and didn't go far to see if they shut up later or stop the scatological jokes... fixed party was also lame, but at 4 characters the warrior/thief/mago/cleric was probably what most would roll anyway...

I only played the demo of the original and found it to be a very derivative game. Doesn't help that it constantly tries to be funny and you are stuck with characters that are all unlikeable as fuck. It's as if Dreamworks made an RPG.

The star system is cool though. Not groundbreaking by any means, Arcanum did it first and a lot of pnp games have similar systems. But it works well in the game and if you're going to try and prevent people from save scumming, do it like that.

the inclusion of a new “dynamic spells” system that will complement the original game’s stable of “fixed spells.”
I read this thinking it was spellmaking and went "hmmm" but turns out it's just procedurally generated spells with funneh names.

Sad to see that this got a sequel while KOTC did not.

A bigger party is cool, who cares when you are stuck playing his horrible pregens.

KOTC sequel is still coming, just a fair bit more down the line. The first in this series is still on my enormous backlog, but I'd reckon this to be a marked improvement on all fronts and thus will purchase it in due course somewhere in the future.
