My urge to play something similar to MM6-8 is strong. In the last couple of years I've played total conversion mods (Chaos conspiracy & Amber Island - both are great) and recently tried a couple of clones and frankly, they were mostly disgusting. Is there something at least passable that could bring my childhood memories alive? I've already played following:

-Legendary Journeys - a game for ppl with no taste, could only stand 6 minutes. Lack of proper UI, horrible graphics, almost burned my laptop despite looking worse than Wizardry 8.

-Monsters of Mican - here the dev at least tried to create passable UI and explain mechanics. But I am not into comedy games. And the execution was rather terrible, both in look and sound department.
-I will not try to spell the name - tried for 20 minutes and refunded. No character creation, aesthetics for 7 years old, fuck no.

-Has anyone played this one? Looks like total shit, but the sequel is in production and could be a bit better.

-Wardens of chaos gives me boner, but still not released https://store.steampowered.com/app/2787180/Wardens_of_Chaos/

-I will try this, but I have no hope

Have you tried Might & Magic 9?
Yeah, years ago. Something was bothering me with this game, don't remember what exactly. Currently it does not run on my PC (win10). And I've tried tinkering with different ways to run it + have telp 1.3 and new patch from celestial heavens forum

it's not just 6-8, there are barely any clones of might and magic games at all. those that do exist are very rough and look like someone's first attempt at making a game: prosperian graphics, lots of bugs and poorly implemented mechanics (like some of the games you've tried)

the only one that stands out and looks like a real game is legends of amberland which is a clone of mm3. i didn't play it though because from what i've seen the dungeon design is very simplistic (no secret doors, traps or puzzles) and the combat is even easier. i also saw the world map and it was almost an exact replica of isles of terra. however, it does capture the whimsical colorful setting of mm3-5 very well (more so than 6-8) and i've read that improves the character system by introducing race/class combos and more class bonuses but idk how distinct they are or if its just some bs like +1 hp/level again.

All of these look like a 20 year old messing around after his Unity 101 university class. Tech demos at best. 90% of Steam is full of half finished schlock like this. So tiring.

I've tried demo of Amberland 2 today - it's a simple game, mechanically half of might and magic, maybe even less. Visuals are varied from amateur to repulsive. It's really one old polish guy doing his hobby project with some free shitty assets, there's no depth.

However, A Quest that become a legend, fucking stupid name for a game, but after 30 minutes of Unity trying to fry my CPU I have found that it's pretty complex. Nice set of different mechanics + stuff I didn't saw in a long time, like minimap available after you posses some cartography/mapping skill. UI is confusing, as there are some screens available only after you press a shortcut. There's no indication of skilltrees on char creation on main game UI. Funny stuff.

And I've played MMX when it was released, not a bad game. Poorly optimised and with limited exploration if I remember correctly

Heh, I've selected the best from the genre. But truth to be told, MM7 and 8 especially, were also being considered as lousy and outdated when they were released.

Wizardry and Bards Tale series are all kinda similar. And various other blobbers.

I think more people should check out EverQuest if they like games like this. They might not be the exact same genres but playing things like this and even Sacred/Diablo reminds me a lot of EQ. You run near a bunch of enemies and get them to chase you, then you run back to your group and blow them up. Or you do damage to them as you keep them at distance. You get a big bunch of experience and a pile of loot. Then repeat. It can be satisfying and you make progress which allows you to see and do a lot more.

Some downsides are that real EQ is dead so to play it you need to play an emulator like p99. And it was designed for 6 real people to play together as a group. So playing it solo limits what you can do and slows things down. But if you like it you can find people to play with or do it with bots.

Some upsides are that although it's old and kind of dead, it is still newer and bigger budget and higher tech than any of the M&M games. So you get a huge world with a lot to do and it looks and feels good to play.

Have you tried Legends of Amberland?

Hmm, not yet. I see that there's a sequel - which one is better? And it runs on steam deck.

They're more akin to M&M 3-5 if that factors into your decision. They are both on the exact same engine just like those games too. Just try the first out.
I think they're rather cozy and capture the middle era of M&M quite well.

I can confirm your assessment. I completed the first game but it was rather meh. Exploration is mildly interesting but there isn't much challenge to it after a few hours.

Well, I guess it was supposed to be sarcastic. BUT this still looks 100 times better vs all other games. And it is not bloomy at all. It is just shiny, I think it must be some sort of gold mine filled with gold (lol).
I've watched a minute of gameplay and the party almost died, that's a plus.

 Screw you, i liked it.

As for suggestions, there is this game with the most creative name ever.

Didn't try it myself yet, in my backlog until i get freetime and will to play.

This game also looks interesting.

Doesn't seem to have a proper UI either and Synty graphics tho.
