Stats do matter in The Witcher.
Please list the non-combat and non-magic stats that allow me to select different dialogue options!

(Stats matter in Diablo too - if I put a lot into Energy I can cast more spells, allowing me a different strategy to solve quests and deal with obstacles.)

Sigh. Yet another complainer who didn't get past Act 1. Starting in Act 3, you can develop Geralt's personality, in fact, there's a major quest line about it.

speaking of which - there's a quest line where you do the same for Alvin (or what was that boy's name) - what was the point of it if in the end it turned out to be meaningless and he grew up into the bad racist paranoid bastard anyway?

The Witcher: none
Any Infinity Engine game besides PST: none
Ultima VII: none
Morrowind: one, and it's fairly pointless

Also Arcanum has a few non-combat stats that affect dialog options.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
22^2 + 22^2 = 968

sqr 968 = 31.1

1 mile = 1.6 kilometres

31.1 miles * 1.6 = 49.8 kilometres

49.8 / 6 = 8.3 kilometres/hour

average walking speed is about 4 to 5 km/h
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking

So movement is about twice as fast as the average walking speed. Taking "natural" obstacles like mountains, rivers, etc into account I'd say the speed is quite fast.

LOL
What. The. Fuck.

1) As Balor pointed out, they don't give you the dimension. It is apparently 22 square miles.
2) Even if they did give the dimensions, what you did makes zero sense. Why the hell are you applying the Pythagorean theorem? If the dimensions were 22x22, the area would be 22x22 = 484 square miles.

To calculate how far it would be to walk the stretch of the map diagonally maybe?

But the playing field could be 1*(10^-100)*2,2*(10^101) kilometers for all we know.

Edit: Oops, it was in miles.

22 square miles is a little more than the whole territory of Stalker taken together.
so I don't understand what media-whores are so happy about. it's a pretty limited territory
