You remember wrong. There's a re3ason why familiars gain the ability to deliver spell tocuh attacks on behalf of their owner. Do you think they'd do that if they couldn't enter melee?
Familiars have good ac, SR, buffs, decent hit ppints (varies on mage - as low as 50 or so, and as high as possibley 100+).
A familiar shouldn't be a front line tank ala the fighter class; but it is no pocket protector.
