"Give it 3 years and mods will fix my 1/10 horrendous game" crowd deserves public whippings

Reminds me of a long time ago, think it was 2010, I was playing modded FO3 and realized there was no good reason for me to be playing modded Fallout 3 because ITS FUCKING FALLOUT 3, no mod is going to fix what is wrong with that game

I think most people will agree on a new sword for Oblivion, or stuff that fixes a game's shitty lighting filter, or removes invisible walls. Sure, these are all mods, but can an entirely new fan-made campaign for a game, with new assets and even new cutscenes, be called a mod? Doesn't feel very right to call that a mod to me, at least it doesn't feel like it belongs in the usual mod definition.
That's why the word "Overhaul" is used when discussing mods such as the one you've described, since it transforms the core experience into something completely different, A mod is a modification of an existing game and thus people use the term as such for the sake of clarity.

Bethesda games don't need fixing (except Oblivion, but that shit is unfixable), they're very good and fun in their original [state].
Yeah, that's why one the most popular mods in BGS games is a patch mod that fixes the game from the ground up, totally not broken guys.

1/10 games will never be good, no one believes that or would argue that mods could fix it. It won't have a modding community to start with. If you want dedicated modders and great mods you won't find it for a game like Gollum, you find it for popular games and sometimes for just decent games because people see potential.

A 6/10 game can maybe get really good, it obviously depends on exactly what the issues are, if they can even be fixed or if will be some half-assed hack that just makes it 25% better. Games can have many small nuances, maybe it's total garbage AI, or garbage UI which just ruins an otherwise good experience.

You mean some games can have small blemishes that negatively impact the overall experience, and thus, small little mods can iron out those issues and lift it from a 6/10 to potentially an 8/10 etc.

The issue I see is that most people use Mods as a crutch to justify developer laziness, Mods are supposed to enhance/add-on to the original game, not replace it altogether.
at that point, you're playing a completely different game that its strengths and weaknesses cannot be attributed to the designers because you've modded the game so much it's nothing like the original product anymore.

With limited time and budget - you can either make a mod for existing game - or 2D Unity Steam Early Access RPG from scratch.

One will get you fame among unattractive nerds and 0$.

And the other - Codex-wide fame and around 10$ a month - from Codexers who could not find pirate copy and bought it on sale.

Choose wisely.

it's not always the case of a developer being lazy, there are so many games which are cut like 40% because suddenly the Publisher is doing bad or decides it's not going to make enough money or whatever, so they must finish it in months instead of perhaps another 1-2 years. Then the game is rushed out of the door. Sometimes some of the cut content can make it back because it's left but not used.

Often those cut games are games which are highly praised on here btw, not exactly games which are meant for a super wide audience always.

So no, i don't agree at all that mods always has to be to enhance or add, sometimes its needed to fix, to restore. Then there are developers (or its on the Publisher's side) who seemingly takes advantage of modders to fix their shit - don't buy their games, play them all you want, but don't support them with your money.
