having heard that Gothic III was a reasonably enjoyable game with the recent community patch I decided to give the game a try. So far I would have to say that it is "ok", if someone is looking for a game that mirrors the Morrowind/Oblivion design and scope, Gothic III appears to be a worthwhile option.
however I am finding the game surprisingly difficult in its own way. After having played for at least somewhere between 20-30 hours with a character around level 13 it appears I am still somewhere right at the beginning.
not just in terms of area covered from the original starting zone but also the level of challenge appears to have stayed the same over the course of my character's development. So in effect the same encounters that were dangerous 10 levels prior are still quite challenging. If anything I can only expect the game to increase in difficulty.
I have designed another archer type character, which is typical for me now in almost any rpg. In my experience pure archers always face a level of challenge unless they rely almost exclusively on area effect or multiple arrow shots, and/or perhaps continuous kiting. These two conditions I try my best to avoid in pursuit of archery 'professions', and so my characters often appear a little weak.
to work with this issue I have also found a modest archer specialist with aforesaid conditions can still be played if they diversify preparation with basic starting melee skills.
my Gothic III character has placed 150 points into melee, approx 170 in Archery, and has specialised in both of the beginning advanced skills for these respective disciplines. So I understand my character would be weaker than usual at the start of the game. But I would like to know if I am probably doing something wrong in playing against the game ?
Goblins in large groups are still a possible threat, as with Bandits and wildlife encounters such as Boars and Wolves in any number. In these situations I will have to make distance, heal and return with ranged then melee. However the chance of being caught out is very high.
then there are Ogres, I am not sure how a dedicated melee specialist of equivalent level could fight these guys, I have only barely escaped with a close whiff from their morningstars..
the game can only get harder I expect. Without spoilers is there any idea or advice for a new player ?
