Gothic III: am I doing something wrong ?

having heard that Gothic III was a reasonably enjoyable game with the recent community patch I decided to give the game a try. So far I would have to say that it is "ok", if someone is looking for a game that mirrors the Morrowind/Oblivion design and scope, Gothic III appears to be a worthwhile option.

however I am finding the game surprisingly difficult in its own way. After having played for at least somewhere between 20-30 hours with a character around level 13 it appears I am still somewhere right at the beginning.

not just in terms of area covered from the original starting zone but also the level of challenge appears to have stayed the same over the course of my character's development. So in effect the same encounters that were dangerous 10 levels prior are still quite challenging. If anything I can only expect the game to increase in difficulty.

I have designed another archer type character, which is typical for me now in almost any rpg. In my experience pure archers always face a level of challenge unless they rely almost exclusively on area effect or multiple arrow shots, and/or perhaps continuous kiting. These two conditions I try my best to avoid in pursuit of archery 'professions', and so my characters often appear a little weak.

to work with this issue I have also found a modest archer specialist with aforesaid conditions can still be played if they diversify preparation with basic starting melee skills.

my Gothic III character has placed 150 points into melee, approx 170 in Archery, and has specialised in both of the beginning advanced skills for these respective disciplines. So I understand my character would be weaker than usual at the start of the game. But I would like to know if I am probably doing something wrong in playing against the game ?

Goblins in large groups are still a possible threat, as with Bandits and wildlife encounters such as Boars and Wolves in any number. In these situations I will have to make distance, heal and return with ranged then melee. However the chance of being caught out is very high.

then there are Ogres, I am not sure how a dedicated melee specialist of equivalent level could fight these guys, I have only barely escaped with a close whiff from their morningstars..

the game can only get harder I expect. Without spoilers is there any idea or advice for a new player ?

Ogres should be no problem if you use some of the special ammo you find. Fire or detonating arrows are fine.

It could be worth learning how to make this kind of ammo. You'll need them in masses.

Yeah.
In fact, I remember you could become arena champion at level 1, and, God, was that shit fun or what?

Yeah you must be doing something wrong. Because from my experience the difficulty in Gothic 3 for specific combat aproach is:
- Mage - easiest
- Archer - a little bit harder
- Warrior - hardest

You should only invest in archery so that you could use the best bows as fast as you can. Archers own this game. Ive managed to achieve 40-lvl character in 2 days with almost weakest possible armor(the first tier of armors). Hit'n'run tactics baby FTW.

@Jim

We must have been playing different games, because G3 is clearly easier game than the previous 2. Not to mention god awful difficulty of Gothic 2 expansion.

G3 with patch 1.72 is a lot more difficult (with alternative balancing & AI). I'm level 61 and am still get pwned by ogres in melee (admittedly on hard difficulty). Run away and fire arrows into their heads until dead.

Don't believe in such blatant lies, Aothan. Previous instalments of the series are brilliant fantasy hitch-hiking simulators with awesome use of level-scaling and there is nothing awfully difficult about them.

I killed everything in the game with my level 1 character and rusty sword. I had to grind up to level 2 to fight Seekers, though.

It has been a long time so forgive my memory but I recall using a spear or halberd effectively. Once you have your stamina/endurance high enough, you should be able to complete three 360 degree attacks in a row at a reasonable distance from oncoming melee attacks.

Once you level up enough to get these spells they make a huge difference.
Time bubble slows the enemies while you back up and let loose with Fire Rain and Hailstorm. Also, I think I remember a poison cloud spell that you could spam and put a lot of hurt on your foes.

I was going to say "Yes, you're playing the wrong Gothic game", but as I guessed, someone already beat me to it.

That said, I haven't played Gothic 3 enough to say if you're doing anything wrong as an Archer - I'm waiting for the Humanforce Quest package before I have another crack at G3.

Gothic 3 is one of those RPGs like Morrowind where your end-game character will end up being some kind of super-ninja. Aim for super-ninja and things will become easier.

Level-scaling?
I think my sarcasm detector has a malfunction because that cannot be true.

There is no fucking way that "awesome" and "level-scaling" can be used in one sentence. Period.

In fact Gothic 3 has level-scaling. But it isn´t as annoying as Oblivion and if you don´t know about it, you probably wouldn´t even realize it. But hearing it for the first time, I felt like I had to vomit.

And I don´t think you make something wrong. It takes some time and some good equipment. Don´t forget you can theoretically reach level 90. And playing on hard (+ alternative balancing and AI) means, you will loose most of the time when you´re getting outnumbered. But that´s how it is in Gothic 1 + 2, too.
