Thought I predicted the opposite actually. Although I've been a little disappointed total economic melt-down hasn't quite happened yet.

Not true. I think the first screenshots from Duke Nukem Forever were from 1999. I remember reading an article about it using the Quake 2 engine, before or around the release of Quake 2.
