There's both the built in "there's an app for this forum" banner. But there's also a half-page banner (on iPads) and a hideous full-page blue pop-up on my cellphone.

Wait, are you actually complaining that it looks obnoxious because of your blocking ads? For the sake of explaining the obvious to everyone blocking ads who don't know: that large empty space is where the ad would appear if it wasn't adblocked.

Hideous? You don't even have to look at any of them if they offend your artistic sensibilities, everyone past the age of 5 manages to develop advertising blindness in something like a week. And for those extra bothered by the ads, we've got the patronage system in place. But if this is one of those "I want to have my cake and eat it too" "I will only tolerate ads that are invisible but still pay the site's bills" rants, yea, we're still firmly rooted in the real world where things like that don't actually work. Sorry about that!

Yes, because not all of them pay per click, luckily. They're not meant to be completely ignorable, but certainly nobody uninterested in them will give them more than a glance when scrolling past. As for it being "giant", eheh... hardly. Those 300x250 rectangles are medium at best by today's standards and screen resolutions, so unless you're on something like 800x600, "giant" is really not an adjective that you could apply to them. They really feel out of place in a forum's table layout exactly because they're so small that there's a large amount of empty space left and right of them. Most forums handle that by having 2 or 3 such ads in a row or using the largest available ad unit spanning the size of 3 usual rectangles, but I'm sure that that'd be another complaint... it would look better, however, definitely.

Enormous, full-width ad banners intersecting the forum index display is Chinesey as fuck. I'd personally restrict them to the top of the index or tucked into the margins like any other halfway-respectable web forum.

IIRC it happens when there's an update to the tapatalk software. The banners get toggled on again. I know we've had them removed several times but they keep returning. There's both the built in "there's an app for this forum" banner. But there's also a half-page banner (on iPads) and a hideous full-page blue pop-up on my cellphone.

Yeah, Tapatalk are a PIA. They changed how to disable their annoying pop-up shit. As of now, I believe we've removed it all...

Over the last couple of years, enough that it's been paying most of our bills, but the more visitors that we have that block the ads, the harder it gets. At this point the average on most gaming sites is that more than 50% of traffic is effectively wasted on people who block all ads, offloading the cost of their resource usage to less than half of the remaining users, which creates a boatload of problems for obvious reasons.

I'm unsure why they can't do that already. Don't understand it one bit. I'm going to guess a browser would have to be custom-made to receive and send the requisite data as normal while simultaneously blanking out offending images and resizing borders to fill the void space on the user's end only, or something along those lines.

If the ad code is stripped out completely, that traffic just doesn't exist for the advertising providers so the loss only occurs on the side of the website. But if the ads were only hidden, any campaigns that pay per impression would still pay for those page loads, but the advertising providers would effectively be paying for fraudulent traffic, which would also be throwing off the actual click-through rate. Not that I believe that the authors of AdBlock would have any moral qualms about that, it's likely simply because they viewed it as a potential (legal) threat or problem that was easy to avoid. Advertising providers as a rule do everything they can to make sure that they're only paying for legitimate traffic, so something like that wouldn't go down well with them and Google by extension -- and Google's reach is pretty much all-encompassing.

I think you need to be more greatful, Jasede. Running a website with high traffic everyday, having to pay the bills every month, and still keeping most of the forum free to see, and more importantly, free to join isn't exactly easy. Oh, and from what I gathered, people are getting increasingly better at spotting Chinese/Nigerian/Indian/Korean/x country spam and avoiding them. They find ways and means to get fake emails anyway without paying a single cent most of the time.

Ah yes, ethics. Indeed, the first list items that spring to mind when I think of ethics are businessmen, corporations, and advert firms, with politicians and car salesmen hot on their heels.

Here, let me have a look at these ads being served up here on the Codex by reputable, upstanding pillars of the community who, I'm sure, are themselves exemplars of ethical conduct. Featuring such classics as:

A shady, likely unaccredited, for-profit online university billing itself as the cat's meow....

INSURANCE COMPANIES HOPE YOU DON'T KNOW THIS EASY TRICK! leading to a hastily designed, fly-by-nite site, most likely a scam....

The ads aren't changing now when I refresh, so that's all I've got. I've never in my life clicked on an Internet advertisement except to investigate it for reasons along these same lines, let alone purchased any product or service as a result. In fact, the more ads I see, the more that company annoys me, and the less likely I am to buy their product. If it's something I want or need, I'll find out about it by seeking it out, or by word of mouth. If not, I definitely don't need it, and I almost certainly don't want it.
