IndieRPGs.com have posted an announcement for Guido Henkel's next RPG Deathfire, which has some new information from the man himself -- at least I assume it's new, but it's nice to have turn-based combat and inter-character interaction confirmed anyway:

Ladies and gentlemen: Guido Henkel (yes, that Guido Henkel) writes in to announce the development of Deathfire, a 3D, party-based, non-linear, first-person RPG that he’s developing with Marian Arnold (Divine Divinity), André Taulien (Divine Divinity) and Thu-Lieu Pham (Thorvalla).

Deathfire will feature real-time, grid-based exploration of the world mixed with turn-based combat. Henkel writes:

"The game uses a stepped first person perspective, but unlike “Dungeon Master” or more recently “Legends of Grimrock,” this is not a linear monster bashing dungeon crawl. We are creating a world that is richer and uses a complete role-playing engine, hearkening back a lot more at games I created in the past, particularly the “Realms of Arkania” trilogy. Despite this general real-time approach to the environment, the combat system will be a turn-based system that, once again, dives deeper into role playing elements than any real time game possibly could. We have not revealed any details about combat at this time, but I would like you to know that it will be an engaging experience that offers plenty of options for the player."

Deathfire is planned to feature six races, eight classes, and a suite of 34 character traits that you can use when creating your four-character party.

On top of that, your party will have two slots for recruitable NPCs–Henkel promises that there will be “a lot of inter-character activity….It was one of the hallmarks when we designed ‘Planescape: Torment’ and I’ll definitely stick to that because it opens up a wealth of cool opportunities for us as game designers.” It has not yet been decided whether this will be an interactive system, or whether the game will handle characters taunting and interacting with one another automatically.

Deathfire is being developed in Unity for Windows and Mac, with a Linux version to be released either concurrently or shortly thereafter. Henkel says they’re loosely targeting Deathfire for a 2014 release.

The announcement also features some screenshots, but I believe they have already been posted in other articles about the game.

Can't wait for the wave of incline to hit so I can start cherry-picking games instead of trying to pick the ones that stink the least.

Here is another advantage of Kickstarter, there we usually get more information about the game instead of just some press blurbs. Looking good but hard to tell with that information.

I still can't over that name.

Looking forward to it anyway though, if only because nobody else is really doing an Arkania style RPG. Though I hope there is an appreciable distribution of different roles across party members, because there aren't that many skills there in the general scheme of things. Maybe you distribute very few points between levels.

So you can't spend 1 coin? Or do you want to fund the WHOLE game project?

Heh, if nothing else, Kickstarter is certainly starting to make a dent in my backlog.

...

I'm an irresponsible cow when it comes to money, but fortunately with someone who isn't. So I have an annual video games budget. And please, Mr. Henkel, I'd like not to use it all up in May. Pretty please?

Doesn't this have more in common with Might & Magic X than Planescape. Maybe just a little bit of name-dropping. In other words, I don't think inter-character activity is a big selling point among the traditional party-based dungeon crawling crowd. Realms of Arkania certainly wasn't known for its inter-character activity, unless we're talking about the party's druid using a mandrake root on another diseased character.

Having said that, I like the direction this project seems to be going. It's the marketing/PR and choice of references that bugs me sometimes.

Mr. Henkel nobody thinks you've Kickstarted it yet. It's just that nobody thinks you won't do it, likely sometime very soon.

The name is growing on me. Deathfire. The arch nemesis of lifewater.

... The arch nemesis of ... sperm? That's so ridiculous I'm almost hoping it's intentional :D

All the RPG's he was involved in are among my favorites. Even pre-RoA Spirit of Adventure was a nice enough game. I think he knows what he is doing.

I tried Spirit of Adventure, but couldn't get into it. Which is strange, because it was a six character party adventure. However, back in those days, there were a lot of cRPG titles to choose from.

Would the game be worth trying again, if I could run it? I seem to recall not making it out of the starting city because of travel crystals that needed to be recharged, and runes, and other oddities. Memory is a bit fuzzy, save for an NPC named Ramirez who even used Sean Connory's image from Highlander.

I still want to play SoA but everybody's insistent that it's so clunky that there are better alternatives, nevermind the fact there seems to be virtually no information on it anywhere. But I'd love to get back to it, anything to delay the inevitable end of my RoA trilogy playthrough.

I'm not even sure if Spirit of Adventure was ever translated into English. It is definitely even more clunky than the first RoA, but fun nevertheless I think.

3 man team...to be released in 2014?

3 men and one woman. So far.

It is a much smaller game than Thorvalla would have been and more linear. Basically, a turn-based Grimrock with a much larger focus on story.

Are there any video interviews floating around that might give some insight into the way he thinks about game design? I can't seem to find anything
