Historical Revisionism in Video Game and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Thank you for proving this topic is needed because stupid revisionists like you. Chrono Trigger flopped IN THE WEST. No one gives a flying fuck what gooks were buying and playing. We care about the actual experiences of English speakers that are being rewritten by faggots like you. If we're talking pure sales numbers than Chrono Trigger is a fucking mobile game.
now wait a second, JRPGs back then were a much smaller niche than now, people who praise CT do so in the context of JRPGs, obviously it didn't sell as well as Mario games. But among JRPGs it wasn't a failure. I think FF6 sold twice as much as Chrono did but these 2 games are also considered the best of the genre along with FF7.

It's not revisionism to say Chrono Trigger is one of the best JRPGs ever made. I think the genre has more appreciation now than it did back then in the west, so what?

Take the book The Great Gatsby for example, it was a huge flop at the time because of the onset of the great depression and people not caring for that type of story. But by now it is recognized as one of the best American novels.

They don't praise it in any context like that. It's always called "TEH BEST GAME EVER!" by a bunch of retards. Same shit Earthbound used to get and now that crowd has moved onto Chrono Trigger. In 10 years time it will be another niche JRPG no one gave a fuck about.

This article is spot on for Chrono Trigger fans.

The consesus generally is that A Link to the Past is the best SNES game. I imagine on RPG/JRPG boards they would favor Chrono Trigger and FF6 over Zelda, Mario or Metroid, despite the latter being much more popular.

EarthBound being a flop in the West is part of the whole mythos surrounding it today, surely. For the most pretentious people, something they enjoy being badly received by the public is a dream come true, because it means that they're part of the elite few with the taste and know-how to enjoy it.

Regarding Chrono Trigger: I see why people like it but, at the same time, you just have to accept that random shit gets picked as the "greatest of all time" for any medium, and then people twenty years later forget about it and pick a different thing. Kids in 2040 will be looking for any random-ass 90s game to fixate on and lionise, and there's a non-zero chance that a million YouTube (or whatever they have in 2040) essays will be popping up called shit like "How 1994's 'Magic Carpet' Changed Gaming Forever". It's just what people do, they like the idea of golden ages, narratives about lone games "changing everything", and all that kind of thing.

Oh really?

Both answers are wrong any way. Mario World is the best SNES game. And it's not even close. Maybe DKC2 could compare but even that's debatable.
lol that article ranking zelda on #8... that's just one guy's opinion: "As a child, my teachers would often ask me during class if I was feeling cold. They’d notice the goosebumps on my arm and get worried I might be feeling a draft from the window. In truth, I was not cold. In fact, I’m the type to wear shorts while there’s snow on the ground. My mind was wandering thinking about Chrono Trigger, and the memories would literally give me chills." LMAO

Can anyone think of games that have been glorified as classics and then subsequently lost that status? I don't mean games that came out to a warm reception and then got forgotten very quickly, but rather games that were held up as titans years after their release, only for everyone to either forget all about them or actively turn against them.

Suppose it doesn't help that the internet has turned all of culture into a static digital sewage stream where people are just regurgitating the opinions of internet users from 20 years ago, and discourse doesn't really move on in the way it naturally should anymore.

Final Fantasy 7 is the biggest one.

If we're talking Bongistan then there is nothing that comes close to Dizzy. Dizzy used to sell machines and had like 15 fucking games. Today it couldn't even kickstart a new one.

The inability to move while shooting means the original RE4 has dated mechanics – which makes it inferior to the RE4 remake [and other modern over-the-shoulder shooters which allow you to move and shoot].
I remember variations of this view being common among YouTube reviewers, especially among reviewers in their early 20s.

BG3 I hope.
Depends what the cRPG genre does next, I can sadly see a situation where a lot of what BG3 offers isn't really surpassed for the next decade and it thus retains its "instant classic" status.

FF7, really? Is it regarded as being kind of shit nowadays? I thought it was still a "classic", the only real change I've perceived in Final Fantasy games is that people sometimes shit on 4 and 6 nowadays, and 8 seems to have gotten more favourably received over time.

I remember Dizzy! He was shit!

And when they eventually put mobile shooting in the series it didn't change anything because standing in place is better for accuracy and moving without your gun up is quicker if you need to get distance. More of their memes, they don't even realize what made the original game feel great, and I'd say the importance of picking a good shooting spot because you will be rooted there and thus vulnerable was a big contributor.

I like the Playstation 1's gritty future library

Armored Core, Biohazard, Carnage Heart, Einhander, Front Misson 2, Future Cop, Ghost in the Shell, Silent Bomber, R-Type Delta, Trap Gunner.

A lot (if not most) of today's revisionism was already shaped by retarded rhetoric perpetuated back then. And it was largely related to various console stuff indeed for some reason. One of the things I like doing when I visit my parents is reading my old video game mags that are still stored in the basement and the number of hilariously wrong and bizarre takes is outstanding, even if you factor the hindsight.

There's also the "history is written by the victor" factor at work. A good example from my backyard would be people constantly praising cd projekt for starting the trend of cheap game re-editions and being saviors who gave poor unwashed potatoes affordable access to legal software.

And chronotrigger is for sure a hilarious case study. It's constantly mentioned as the best jrpg ever, included in virtually every top x crpgs of all time lists etc. But 9/10 people writing that shite would absolutely not recognize it if you showed them a random screenshot.

I mentioned it in another post but it always seemed like other console players moved on in their lives while Nintendo ones in particular never got one/became gaming "journalists".

Nintendo was able to create a culture around the brand, can't be said for SEGA.

Agreed 100%. While this doesn't affect us here that much since we lived through it all, imagine for instance being a teenager today that starts developing a taste for the good oldies, either by being introduced to them by a :obviously: relative or by own interest, imagine how ridiculous it must be to navigate through millions of internet bullshitters and mongoloid trannies painting these absurd pictures of the past when you weren't there experiencing it first-hand. Essentially you have to be lucky to have non-retards guiding you, or just brute force your way through the systems' libraries without any guidance.

One of the biggest examples of that revisionism is the SNES x Genesis console wars. By far the most fun system wars we ever had when it comes to consoles, fierce to the last title, they were two behemoths with amazing, all encompassing libraries. If you go by most of today's content creators though, they all paint this 100% unilateral stomp where the SNES destroyed the Genesis to shreds and all Genesis fans are either crybaby retards or they just defend the Genesis ironically, almost as a meme to troll around and keep the war alive, because "no one in their right mind would pick the Genesis over the SNES". They also paint the Genesis as this inferior piece of hardware with a silly sound chip that had to resort to lies and attacks in their ads to stand any chance against the holy SNES. Meanwhile the SNES is painted pretty much as the default go-to 16-bit console, end of story, no questions asked.

Spot on about the N64 too. Youtubers now paint this picture in which everyone was playing either Mario 64 or Banjo back in the day, with the odd weirdo owning "the pervert squirrel game", conveniently sweeping the thousands-long PSX library under the rug for no reason, not to mention the PC scene which was immense (and didn't consist solely of Half-Life).

Nintendo 64 was a big flop at the time, especially compared to the numbers of what Playstation was selling at the time, so Nintendo fanboys now trying to rewrite history is hilarious. No one fucking cared about N64 in here at the time, while PSX was fucking everywhere in the late 90s, it basically became in late 90s what C64 was in the 80s in here.

Based on what I've seen, as others have mentioned in this topic, console-plebs are so fucking ignorant of anything else than what they have in their very myopic view. Manchildren, manchildren never change.

Now Samus is a space ninja
She was a space ninja in SM as well (air combat, wall jumps, super speed, super acrobatics)
And that was always the intention of the creators (specially Yoshio Sakamoto) - Other M might get shit for everything else, but one thing the game got right was showcasing how op Samus is (both in combat and mobility)
Really Dread is not breaking any canon by portraying Samus as a super space soldier/ninja

Youtubers are rarely honest or know what they are talking about, and you overestimate their popularity.

I'm more butthurt that 95% of 'dexers doesn't give Prelude to Darkness, second best RPG ever released after Arcanum, a try because "it looks old and janky and nobody else plays it so who cares xd let's play starfield!"
