I must not be the only one who uses Guybrush Threepwood as a common name...

Definitely not. I use Guybrush Threepwood for almost every game i play. It sort of fits in fallout and arcanum but looks awesome in high fantasy games.

You know when that really sucks? When you're writing short storys and novels and everytime you introduce a new character you struggle with the name. It's horrible.

I never had this problem, but in my years as gamemaster I just came up with names on the spot all the time. I usually think of a letter that I go from, but often names is supposed to convey something about the character. If not a starting letter helps, try take a word and twist it.

But simplest is to just name them after real names, after all they seemingly speak English and it is a setting like medieval England. Can just name them George, John and Rachel.

Evil ones start with a hard letter, like "T" or "K"..Torm! Unless they are machivellian or more insidious, then i'd take something like "Mendon".

Give simple names to simple men. "Pat", "Joli".

Don't use long names without having a nickname if you write. ;) Have them culture based or for rich/royals. King Talimunder "Tal" Moongeese.

If your character is a lizard, make sure to use at least 30% "s". :D

If he is a retard, just name him "Cleve"

Hope I could help.

I get a bunch of mine from mix'n'matching names from Privateer 2. The offical guide lists them all. While it's a sci-fi game, a lot of the names can fit most any genre.

Here here. Except that I use my online name, and name chicks after my exes :D

I usually use the names of historical figures with cool names
Erasmus
Frobenius
or one of Paracelsus' many names (Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim - which just happens to be the greatest name history has ever produced)
Dante or Virgil
Goethe or Faust

For women I generally use Gaelic names from Sláine
Niamh
Medb

I usually make up some fantasy sounding name for games with magic. Sometimes it includes a reference to something. I started a game of NWN2 and named my character Mathius Seldraussa. Mathius because I'm Matthew and Seldraussa because it just sounds forgotten realms Elvish or Drow.

I like to build up my character in my mind and think about how he would respond to certain gameplay situations build him fully and name hime while I go about allocating stats at the start before I jump into the naming and playing bit just so I have a full idea in my head about how he responds to dialogue options and what his actions in a fight will be unless i'm just going to be meta/power gaming.

About 4'30'' in.

:D

I never had any trouble naming characters since I finally decided that no, it did not really matter whether or not the names fit the setting.

So it can be just anything, depending on my mood.

My current Wizardry 8 characters are named after rock bands, or rock persons. Tuff (fighter), Phantom (ranger), Vixen (Walkyrie), Dawk Stillwell (gadgeteer, that one is for connoisseurs), Kip Winger (bard) and Stryper (Bishop).

I have a feeling your main char often got killed by your party member's fireballs. :D

I got creative with my SoZ party names, and found a anagram maker that includes names in the results.

So, if you're nerdy like me, for your ranger put in 'Hunter Silent Bow Killer' and get a name.

Sadly, I can't find the anagram generator that included names in the result, although I know I bookmarked it.

Edit:

Here's one that will produced Surnames.

Worth tinkering with:
