Settings like Dark Sun however, even if now unsupported (though their is a 4th ed. Dark Sun, so let's say Planescape) are still their IP, at least for 100 years or whatever it is now.

But technically WOTC/Hasbro/whoever-the-hell-owns-the-ip could hire some developers to make a game in a setting that's not currenty suported by the current ruleset, correct? I'm talking mechanically, not legally.

Of coruse. Anyone who owns the Ip can do what they want with it legally or otherwise. the fact it's 'unspported' by new rules means squat,

If it was a "real" (party-based, no action shit) Icewind Dale game, this could be pretty fucking awesome.

Seriously, those IWD games were/are so awesome because they were oldschool even when they were new.
Everything less oldschool would most likely be inferior. And no big dev or publisher (well, okay, Paradox, maybe) in these times would be stupid enough to make such a game.

I'd love another IWD series, but I'd prefer it if they added more story elements into it. I always thought that you could do more with the create-your-own-party concept than using it as an excuse to do away with any kind of meaningful interaction.
