It'd be one thing if the Witcher was an unplayable mess of a game and the EE was going to be the only thing that made it playable, but it wasn't.

True words.

It was hands-down the best RPG of '07

No, that's obviously Mask of The Betrayer. TW came in a distant but respectable second but perhaps the EE will change that if it does everything they say it will *and* actually gives you more choices than "You're mad"/"You're an evil bastard" at the endgame.

I realize this is RPG Codex, and it seems to be designed entirely around finding any negative spin you can about every piece of news that comes out of the RPG-area of the gaming industry, but this is a new low for you people. Seriously.

It's a new low for the new management for sure, and DU in particular. I think most of us miss when VD was in charge and we didn't have to deal with this kind of shit.

You know, I've been visiting the Codex for awhile to get my RPG news, and while the ridiculously over-negative tone about any game ever released ever has bothered me, I've never felt the need to waste my time speaking up.

(Plus other stuff)

The Codex is the like the Fox News of RPGs. Or maybe Pravda. Whatever the hell that ridiculous Russian rag is called. You shouldn't ever be surprised at the slant here.

i'm really surprised no one has jumped on the "you people" line

i agree with silellak, but nowhere near enough to respond to the nerd rage with more nerd rage

For what it's worth, "you people" referred to the people who can't seem to post a single piece of news without inflating it full of negative spin.

"Here's a piece of news about Game X - AND HERE IS WHY BOTH THE NEWS AND THE GAME SUCK" gets old after awhile.

To the fellow who gave the "Fox News" analogy, I was actually thinking the same thing, sadly. Except, if they hate every modern RPG that comes out, why do they even run a website about RPGs?

It's more like if Fox News solely reported news about liberals.

I dunno, I'm a software developer myself, so I guess I just get annoyed (obviously) when someone goes out of their way to attack the work of other developers, especially in cases like this where the developers are going the extra mile to do something they didn't have to do.

Oh, post as negatively and sarcastically in the news as possible.
I have no problem with negative news-posts, especially if they are all negative. And I think it is valid for calling out CDproject on their hype.
BUT, you actually think that considerably improving your game for free is bad?!? That'd it be aweful if other devs followed suit?
Let me get this straight: TW was no Dungeon lords. It was playable, had most of its content and was fun to most people. It was regurlarly patched and is now getting a major update that people like Bethesda, Bioware or EPIC would take money for.
While others let modders improve their games to good levels (Bloodlines, KOTOR2, G3, etc) CDproject do it themselves. They wouldn't change business practice to releasing unfinished games. We have that already. They'd change it accepting your mistakes and making up for them as best as you can.

But they really should drop some of their hype...

All this defense of an immature game that has absolute shit writing, crap combat, unmemorable characters, is unoriginal, and simply all around poo poo.

Seriously, outside of Geralt who was famous due to being an already exisiting character no characetr is worthy of memory in this game. That's a fine example of how shit the writing is.

At least it got HOT b00bies right!!!!

A time when I can agree with the man of r00fles. At least on the game being immature. I didn't really play the game beyond the first part because my comp sucks, but I did see videos and it just seemed so terribly immature. It was almost embarrassing.

You haven't mentioned this "RPG" doesn't haven any dialogue-affecting stats (unlike even Jade Empire D: D: D: ) and that you can't be a Rogue, or a Wizard, or a Druid and are forced to always play whatever class that Geralt-guy is.

OOOOH and then people come tell me that "roleplaying game" means playing the ROLE of something; kinda like you play Doomguy in Doom.

(In before You haven't even played it!; shut up, I will in 2009 and you better brace yourself for "Jumblin' Jasede's Jaded Reviews: The Witcher ES".)

Personally, I enjoyed The Witcher. Sure, it was immature at times, the original writing was mutilated (but restored by a fan made patch, so that was no big deal), and the acting was a bit jarring now and then. But compared with the rest of the RPGs I've played in the past few years, this one was still a welcome breath of fresh air.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of:

I've played The Witcher, and it's quite awesome, but I recommend going out of your way not to bang every single female, because it's a stupid gimmick. Worst of all is the fact that you get a card for doing it. I was on The Witcher forums looking for some mods (I never finished the game, loading times were driving me insane) and I saw someone making The Witcher porn for download. It was the saddest shit I've ever seen. They even did anal.

Frankly, I can't see how this "Enhanced edition" is anything different than your typical "Oblivion GOTY collector's edition, now with a latest bugfixes and 15 more minutes of gameplay". Just a glorified patch overhyped to milk more cash out of customers.

Either that, or we have to assume the game was so broken on release it shouldn't have been released as "non-enhanced" edition in the first place. But The Witcher is no Dungeon Lords, the game is fine and playable with last patch, and I don't see why would anyone with a sane mind buy it a second time.

Because it comes as a free download.

Fail. The point here is that they aren't milking any cash out of their customers - those who already bought the game will be able to download the enhanced edition for free.

I'm guessing you missed the two dozen times it's been pointed out that the enhanced edition is a free update to people who've already bought the game?

A glorified patch with more gameplay, a total graphical overhaul, tweaked combat system, and completely redone dialog and voice acting? That's completely like Oblivion GOTY.

...And I've already been beat to the punch twice....

I've heard that, and that is good of course. Still, I've seen people in other threads happily claiming they'll buy EE all over again despite having an original.

And don't forget about NEW customers. Most of them wouldn't even consider giving a try to a year old game, and here comes a chance to market to them a new release all over again for a price of recording new voiceovers and compiling a new installshield package.

It's a normal business practice and I see nothing wrong with it, just suprised people are so enthusiastic and idealistic about it. Just another "GOTY version", optionally available as free download, that's all.

Oh, so you *do* instist that TW is like Dungeon Lords instead, the game so broken on release it shouldn't have been released in its original shape and had to be redone all the way? Right?

Methinks a "GOTY" comparison is less devastating. Fans these days...
