Well, right now, on the comments section of the T:ToN KS, there are many extolling the greatness of RTwP and how they are

not a huge fan of turn based fights in cRPGS. Pausable systems a la Baldur's Gate are great imo

And there are a LOT of them talking like that. o_O

KS comment sections are hell on earth. I hope nobody in inXile takes anything written there seriously.

Oh look, here's a guy asking for an Android port stretch goal.

Is there anyone that would like to know something about the whole system and world before deciding on what kind of combat control is to be used? People are talking how healing in PB, TB and RT systems is different and we don't even know if there will be any source of healing in T:TON. We are supposed to vote on combat system but we don't know anything (not yet, hopefully we will get some info or ideas before voting). All I want is for combat to be good. I have no doubt that Obsidian's PE will have good combat (and it could be licensed and used for Torment), I have no doubt that W2 will hve good combat, I also like combat in JA or in Frozen Synapse. All those systems are different. What would be best one? The one that's best designed for this particular game, where skills and actions are optimized to work with this kind of combat; the one with which developers have best experience; the one for which the developers have best ideas - ideally all of those.

In the end, we will vote as backers. My favorite option would be "let devs decide", but I don't know if we'll get such option. Instead I may have to vote for one system since not voting or choosing "I don't care" will leave it for others to chose, not for devs. Before that, I'd like some concepts from devs.

From the kickstarter : this one is AWESOME:)
Toke
@Pirx Arcanum worked all right with a choice between turn-based and RTwP modes. That way you could go turn based for challenging fights and RTwP to get through trivial encounters fast.
My personal preference would be phase-based ala the new X-Com or Shadowrun Returns. This discussion seems to pop up at least once a day :P

Not only Arcanum is crap but SR is TB
Edit : i mean Arcanum combat system is crap...

And here we are bitching amongst ourselves about whether PB is better than TB when both are a shit ton better than RTwP; when we should be brainwashing that clueless crowd to VOTE RIGHT.

It's not a good format either for gathering or addressing feedback. Adam has put some work into handling and gathering feedback there but he has a really good head on his shoulders so I wouldn't worry about him caving to mass demands of romanceable everythings or third person action cameras.

meh, combat is such a minor part of Torment i dont really care what system is put in play. Though I suppose Phase based would be preferred.

In my mind there arent any trivial encounters. no grinding no respawns no gnolls to farm. Every encounter is meaningfull. A memory, a feeling , a new knowledge all acquired through the battles. with cutscenes inbetween turns. With every encounter your hollow tusk fills a bit !! :bounce:

thats why id like the mod tools too. Cause modders could take entities you encounter through your journey, a broken enemy, a killed comrade, a headhunter that was after you, a body you posessed and used and tell their stories all like a huge fairytale made of 3d tomes, lives branching and going back and forth

Well i just have read the 2 last page of comments on kickstarter.
Quite a lot of people like or at least don't mind TB or PB.
And i'm not counting our honorable mindx2 in this estimation :obviously:

I'd like to see what they can do with phase based, something different but not popamole decline, sort of like travelling back in game industry time.

At least no one is asking for First Person... oh wait...

I'd like to see the option to switch perspectives, maybe zoom in, or to a 3rd person rear perspective (elevated or directly behind), or to a 1st person perspective

Sorry to have derailed this from combat discussion. We really should have a T:ToN Codex Vigilance thread. I loved laughing at all the quotes you all found during the W2 KS. :D

The number of supposedly monocled RPG fans unable to understand the basic premise and appeal of phase-based combat is... surprising?

Oh well, fool-proof retard detection if nothing else. And now I'm sure I'd prefer phase-based just to harvest more butthurt :D

Hey now, a team up with Beamdog is obviously only possible AFTER modders have squashed all bugs they are able to fix without access to the source code.

From my perusal of this thread, there are only 2 supposedly monocled RPG fans unable to understand the basic premise and appeal of phase-based combat. And one of them is Captain Shrek, who has the reading comprehension ability of a 3rd grader, so it really shouldn't be surprising at all.
