(the 2nd video on the store page is the developer giving a basic rundown of the game)
ABOUT THIS GAME
In Intergalactic Fishing you play as an angler tasked with solving the mystery of what is causing the fish to die in your local lake. You must travel to many different lakes all over the universe, exploring, catching fish, gathering data, completing quests, upgrading your gear, and talking with other anglers and scientists in order to figure out what is going on.
Explore countless lakes all over the universe
Explore the dozens of populated lakes in the ULT Network or venture into the unknown and explore uncharted lakes. With procedurally generated lakes and fish species, there is always something unique and interesting to discover.
Fish behavior simulation
Each fish in the lake is individually simulated. Fish behave differently based on their species, size, habits, lure preferences, time of day, their surroundings, etc. Learn about how a species behaves to catch more fish!
Use your BOAT to travel the universe
The Buoyant Object for Above-Water Travel (or BOAT) is a high-tech watercraft equipped with a Universal Lake Teleporter capable of near-instant teleportation to lakes all over the universe. Your BOAT is also equipped with underwater jets for precise maneuverability in the water, a lure fabricator that can create custom-designed lures on demand, and several module slots that allow you to customize your BOAT to your liking.
Design your own lures
Target certain fish species by designing a lure that they will be more likely to bite. Try to create a lure with the perfect stats and behavior with your available lure parts and mods.
Participate in Tournaments
Join fishing tournaments and compete for prizes against the best anglers in the universe. The live leaderboard shows you how you are doing during the tournament.
Take on Fish Contracts
Accept Fish Contracts to catch a certain species of fish from a certain lake then go out to the lake, get your fish, and turn it in for a reward.
Meet other anglers and complete quests
In your travels, you may come across other anglers who can give you some information about the lake or the fish in the lake, or perhaps you will meet someone who needs help and has a quest for you.
Upgrade your gear
Sell valuable fish, complete quests, win tournaments, gather and sell data about lakes and fish species, and complete fish contracts in order to upgrade your gear. Get a better BOAT, a stronger rod, or modules for your BOAT that add new functionality.
Flexible main story quest
The main quest acts as a guide to introduce the player to the different activities in the game, but you can strike off on your own and do whatever you feel like at any time and return to the main quest later.
Detailed career stat tracking
Keep a tally of just about everything you do from number of fish caught to total credits earned to number of lakes visited.
Daily Tournaments and Unknown Lake Leaderboard
See how you stack up against other players by competing in the Daily Tournament with Steam Leaderboard support. You can also choose to have your catches submitted to a leaderboard of the largest fish caught in Unknown Lakes.

I don't even remember how I came across this game but I had wishlisted it a couple of months ago, and now that it has a decent sale going on I decided to give it a try and boy am I glad I did. This game is fucking AMAZING. The game gets right to the point, within seconds after finishing the license test (tutorial) you are immediately tasked with going to one of the 62 lakes and catching four fish. However, you know nothing about how the fish behave until you encounter them or ask other anglers about them. So you can go around and get little bits of data from anglers who might tell you an aspect of a lure that it likes, or where it mostly lives, what reel speed it likes, etc. Once you get this information you can design your lures to match your desired catch's "lure attributes" since you might get quests that task you with catching specific fish, or you may pick up a fish contract for a specific fish, or may want to target one since they tend to be worth more etc.

You can set up your own lures using blocks, but it's not as simple as just sticking what you want onto it without any thought. You can basically min/max each lure for each fish if you wanted to. Build junkies will be in heaven.
This is how lures work:

Things really kick off when you get the ability (really early in the game) to access uncharted lakes. These lakes are procedurally generated, and all the fishes attributes in them too and you are tasked with exploring the lake. This is another way to make money, by selling lake data (and the more complete, the more its worth)

When you get there the map won't be filled out, you won't be able to see how long days last, etc. you'll have to activate the scanners on your BOAT. And since you know absolutely nothing about the fish here you just have to start fishing and try. Maybe try a sinking lure, then a topwater lure.. maybe try changing your lures properties after not getting a bite... then when you finally get a bite you can dissect that fucker to learn more about it, to further hone your lure and method of catching it. In these uncharted lakes, once you've discovered everything about a fish you can name them:

Aside from the main quest and side quests there are also contracts you can pick up to catch specific fish for cash, or participate in tournaments (there's regular tournaments throughout the game and a weekly tournament that has a Steam leaderboard and is a competition among players) Currently, I'm ignoring quests right now and just trying to earn some credits to get a new BOAT w/ more module space and a bigger livewell and some new rods (the starting rod is a piece of shit)

It's also very addicting... DON'T sleep on this game, Codex. It's fucking phenomenal.

Also forgot to mention the game is really relaxing, from the sounds of wind/rain, birds flying overhead, nature noises etc. The game has an entirely ambient sound to it. There will be serene moments with no music and just the sounds of the lake and then some brian eno like ambient music will start up. VERY nice audio.

Now this is the kind of new game I like to see. Just an interesting concept, applied in an unusual setting. More games need to use the whole science fiction/space opera thing as something other than a galaxy spanning conflict, just ordinary people doing ordinary things in space.
