Does the Sling of Everard +5 count? It could be found without ToB. :D
Now this is something i don't remember, but it does not count anyway because slings are gay :D

That only counts if you're using the bonus CD merchants, which you shouldn't.

I think the game gets a lot better on the second half, when you reach Baldurs Gate (just after Cloakwood). Then again, if you detest the combat system and everything else so much you'd perhaps better just to lay it off.

MY QUICK GUIDE ON HOW TO ENJOY THE BG SERIES
BG1 + TotSC
-Use TuTu
-Install the Sword Coast Strategems mod. Why? Better AI, more interesting encounters, more choices for some quests.
-Install Experience Fixer, reduce the XP rewards to at least 50%. Why? Slower character progression(duh), makes the game more interesting and challenging.

BG2 + ToB
-Repeat the Experience Fixer part.
-Install Quest Pack. Why? Better AI, more choices for some quests, some new well-written quests.
-Install Ascension. Why? Makes the ToB endgame much more bearable with some new [mantra] choices & consequences [/mantra].
-Don't use the bonus CD mechants. Why? Imported items from PS:T and IWD. Lame and overpowered stuff - like there weren't enough phat loot already.

2. Planescape: Torment - good.
3. Fallout 2 - MY EYES

This is simply not true. The strongest weapons you find without the expansion are +4, and those are very rare. You can get +3 weapons early on if you know where to look.

The only real uber-loot are the +2 shortswords some random encounter bandits have.

You could make a strong argument for the Improved Mace of Disruption and the Staff of the Magi really being +5 weapons as well. They hit as such (i.e. can hurt monsters only vulnerable to +5 weapons) and are really just as overpowered.

I'll quote myself, because I rock and everything.

Well, the collective top 10 is rather dissimilar to my top 10; but you don't hear me being all pissy about it.

You mean, you wanted to be part of the hivemind? Surprised

As for older games and games that didn't quite make it, perhaps people should look at the "extended results" that Jed supplied.
Wizardry 8 and Ultima 4, my personal favourites, didn't get in the top 10, but they did get mentioned by quite a few people.

I agree that BG2 is the longer game, and has a nicer feel & look to it and stuff. However, I don't really like the story in BG2. You just have this ONE main bad guy who, for some reason, has been
thrown out of his own community.

We don't really get a take ion why this has happened or what is motivations are for doing what he is doing --- besides the he is 'evil' comment.
(iirc).

On the other hand, the original baldur's gate, especially with its add-in, Tales of The Sword Coast, is a very very great game (imo).

The story is much deeper, much more dark & sinister and even has a few political twists and turns. There are reasons behind why the characters in the game do what they do;
they do what they do for power etc. - not just
because they are teh evil....

I agree that the first 1/4 of the game may seem a bit boring at times, when it comes to the story.
However, the combat really eases you out ot this.
And the combat in the first INN was really, really hard. I had to try 4-6 times (or more) to defeat
the guy. I had a real feel of accomplishment, as I did when I finally got my high level spells (like spelsl
for level 3 or 4 or maybe 5, I think).

The narrative structure in BG1 also is very good:
Aas disocver more & more of the plot, you also discover more and more on your background
(in the game, of course ;) ):

That's why BG1 is worth getting, as are all BG games...

I believe everything is worth playing. Baldur's Gate is a textbook example of "how not to" when it comes to RPGs, so if nothing else, there are an abundance of design flaws to learn from.

Well I am going to use my first post here to heap praises on BG1. First off I played Wizardry 1 when it first came out as well as the first ultima, so I was already a vet of these games of some 15 years when BG1 came to town.

It was great back then and it stands the test of time. BG1+expansion, BG2+ ToB are to my own eyes the best game series ever created after fallout 1+2

Torment was the most thought provoking RPG I ever played but it was a different feeling.

What stand out about BG series is the Vibrant mod community. I challenge you to find a mod community outside of BG series that is as vibrant for a game that even the latest expansion is now about 6 years old?

Tutu is only one way to do it. BGT is an even better way imo from spellhold studios. You can play BG1 from the start right up to the end of ToB as a SINGLE game. You can also add many mods along the way. The weidu community has become quite good and due to some very smart people (currently making the broken hourglass) modding BG series is no longer the chore it once was.

Right now I have a BGT game going with many many mods. It took about 10 hours to install and I had to use workarounds to quash bugs but I have a game that includes BG1 plus the expansion along with the 3 huge content mods for BG1. Then I have BG2 mods like TDD, SoS, TS and RoT all installed with the latest fixpacks, new kits from G3 and also version four of BG2 Tweaks. You can also add new NPCs to the game. One I played with named Kelsey was as good as the ones that came with BG2 with hundreds of dialoge interactions.

It makes for an amazing experience and its probably the longest RPG game with all the mods installed in the history of gaming. Sure there are bugs but much less then before.

If you liked BG series at all install BGT with the BG1 NPC pack, mods like Bonehill, mods that increase the AI of enemies, and all the BG2 goodies into one package and have a blast. The mod community for BG1-2 is now almost 10 years old and its still growing! That says something right there.

G3, Spellhold Studios, Pocket Plane, they have all the mods and how to install guides and everything.

The log of what I have installed tells the tale.Just see how many mods I have going and tell me BG community is dead! My BG2 game folder is :D 12.7 GB lol
