Is it trendy in RPGCodex to dislike Bethesda, Bioware, etc?

Yes I am kind of late to the party. I am a classic RPG fan dating back to the early Ultima days on the Commodore 64. While I have been registered here a while I still chuckle at the utter rudeness that goes on here but RPG Codex has developed it's own culture here of whining, elitist CRPGS fans who overly embrace nostalgia. And yet at times I am like this too...

I wonder though, why all the hate for games like Fallout 3, Dragon Age, Oblivion and the like? If someone showed you a glimpse of these games back in 1985 as you waited 5 minutes for Ultima IV to load you would be blown away by everything. And yes, that includes the writing.

I think it has become a trend to make fun of or ridicule the writing in a lot of these games. I do agree mostly about the Mass Effect series which I feel is overrated. But have you guys played Oblivion with the overhaul mods? Also, what is to not like about the open-ended nature of walking through Fallout 3, wondering what that next empty triangle location is and what is around the corner? Is it because these games are so mainstream? Is that why we also love Divinty II lately so much? Risen as well?

I understand that I am about to have heat unleashed down upon me like crazy, but I just feel that I had to say this.

Look, I know why we all love Arcanum. I love it myself. I also love Gothic 3 tremendously. But Fallout 3, New Vegas, Oblivion and Dragon Age are not bad games.

Yes very trendy, but that might have something to do with shit quality of said games

See, this is where I disagree. The word "quality".

Take Oblivion vs Gothic 3 here. Upon release, Oblivion was light years ahead in terms of polish and performance and bugs. Isn't that "quality"?

It may appear to be trendy, but there really is no trend. Appearances of bashing stuff being fashionable on these boards is what made the word "edgy" and the term "KKK" (Kodex Kool Kredits) to enter common usage.

Multiple posters enjoyed some of the Bio or Beth games. There's just autoselection at work here, I think. See the recently popular Witcher bashing threads - it would seem that most of the Codex considers TW crap. If you look more carefully around the board you'll notice that quite a lot of us really liked the game - myself included - they just don't bother to argue the same points over and over. Bringing up QTE combat does get old after all.

To your other question: seems to me that the Codex generally liked New Vegas. Dragon Age gathered mixed reactions but a fair bit of us liked it too. FO3 and Oblivion are almost universally scorned, and for good reason: FO3 had some terrible, terrible writing, area design and balancing and Oblivion is simply a complete, utter mess and a dumb one too, from the gameplay through graphics to bringing a massive decline to the TES series. Overhaul mods aren't really an argument, come on - besides the game is unsalvageable for most of us even with 200+ mods.

What's the point in comparing modern games to ones from the 80's? I'll give you a better thing to consider - imagine a game made by a large dev studio with the technology of today and the design philosophy of the late 90's/early noughties. I'm fairly sure that it would outcompete everything Bio or Beth made recently by a huge margin in terms of gameplay.

Quality in tech has nothing to do with gameplay or visual appearance. And both of this were shit in Oblivion. Even unpatched gothic 3 beats oblivion by miles in every single gameplay aspect. Only combat was equal shit.

okay this "drog" thing is getting weird.

i am guessing he is some poster on here who got banned a while back and was very "pro-AAA rpg titles" and got in arguments with you guys and he made different accounts?

this actually proves my point.

You guys have become such a collective mind you dont think for yourselves anymore. You think that just because there is someone out there who supports some of these mainstream titles it has to be this "drog" guy.

No, no one else likes any of these best selling "game of the year" games right?

@ Morkar:

Actually, even I will admit Gothic 3 had worse combat than Oblivion on release. Combat that is based purely on stun lock is really shitty combat. Oblivion's was bad, but cmon.

Still Gothic 3 at release was still a good game. With community patch is becomes a very good game. Oblivion, no matter how much you mod it, will always be shit.

I am sorry but Oblivion and Fallout gave me a couple great all-time RPG memories:

In Oblivion, going into a painting for a quest. Or how about Paradise with the great voice work of Terence Stamp.

And in Fallout 3, Tranquility Lane.

Hey drog, why don't you start working with Prosper? With your ability to fix bugs/create inane characters and his ability to create youtube videos, you would be an unstoppable force of RPG creating goodness.

You fucking little cunt

Your pespective of an outsider is naive and uninformed, even if you think it is clear-minded. There's a series of causes as to why a game is liked or not. We are an intellectualist community, so we don't discuss about our feelings and first impressions, and we're not about to discuss yours. Try to figure out the arguments and you'll see that it all makes sense. Perhaps there is a bit of hyperbole going on, as you say, but no one except Volourn can't make the distinction between figures of style and content with a minimum of effort. Of course, there's also a fair amount of posters who never post anything worthwhile and spew out the general opinion, but that is needed : it is what makes rpg codex a prestigious magazine, the fact that people are willing to follow its general concenssus... more or less.

For example, to help you a bit here, the reason why games like Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and so on, are not liked, are more than a simple immediate jugement that you, as an ignorant and candid little cunt, can spew out. You have to consider the history of roleplaying games in general, design standards, litterary standards, what is expected, what are the hopes and dissapointments, what is creative, what was done and what could be done better, and so on and so forth. All of this culture is assumed on these forums - without it of course it seems silly, because well shit, everything seems silly to an outsider who doesn't get the context.

I know I'm being trolled, don't worry. Everything is a big troll. Derp. Fuck this shit, where is my armor and lance i have a tournament to go to soon

Some people in this thread think I am trolling.

You do understand that Gothic 3, Ultima VII and Arcanum are three of my all time favorite RPGs?

My point is, Oblivion and Fallout 3 are not AS BAD as you guys say they are. In fact, I think they are good. Not great, but good.

I always worry about people who are so far to one side that they have lost all chances as a reasonable discussion.

No, Drog was a Arcanum modder who snapped and now comes on the Codex with all these alts (seriously, it's ridiculous, one time he came in with a 2 year old alt HE HAD CREATED JUST IN CASE) trying to pose as a new member who tries to stir up trouble by agreeing with the hive mind on some things but hates on one of the Codex's favorite games like Fallout, or...

...or, he pretends to like some games that the Codex hates.

Oh I see. I wish I was a modder. Well if you see my posts they date way back. I have had this username for a while and posted in this Ultima VII thread from January of 2009:
