I dunno. I don't think there's a huge need to remaster it. But a sequel or remake or whatever would be good, with some sort of enhanced fear mechanic, etc.

Remake, yeah, maybe.
The infection and fear systems could also be further refined and expanded.
As I've said, your squad members rarely (if ever) freak out and require adrenaline shots to get them to come to their senses.
I would've liked to see more fear effects, like them having decreased accuracy, refusing to follow orders due to fear, paranoia eventually escalating to them having heart attacks or blowing their brains out (these things happen in the game if fear overtakes them).
Or how about your squad members not trusting not only you, but each other? You have to get them to cooperate effectively.
Just some ideas.

It should have been a Roguelike where you have a small selection of specifically written characters and you have to make decisions to keep them alive or prevent them from being infected. The trust and fear mechanics are crap because the game constantly throws random new NPCs at you and none of them have a personality. They just exist to die or be replaced by NPC #53765.

I have to say Nightdive did an incredible job remastering this piece of crap. The turd has never looked more polished. Now imagine if they used their talents on something like... Silent Hill 3

Wild you go straight from hating to consuming. Good chance the only thing SH3 will get is some Bloober type rehash bullshit. It doesn't need any corporate re-jiggering. The game looks and works nearly perfect right now.

The original sold a lot of copies (at least a million+). I thought it was fun for what it was and even played through it a couple of times. Pretty decent combat, has a few memorable setpieces even. Really, the only bad things about it are a couple very janky bosses and the infection mechanic being bogus. Also it never really fully lived up to the trust/fear systems' promises. I remember having to leave a squaddie inside an absolute bloodbath of a room for a few minutes for him to finally lose his mind and punch his ticket (via shotgun to mouth/sticking his hands in a fuse box).

Yeah.
It's later in the game and it's not even required to do it (basically there is a fusebox which needs to be fixed by an engineer, and it happens to be in a gory room full of blood).

So what's the verdict, is this less jank than the original? Because if it isn't they failed.

Kinda? They tweaked the camera, so now the shooting feels better and doesn't rely as much on the auto-aim. It still has annoyances, like not being able to shoot directly at your feet. The squad infection system now sort of works as intended, but it's still a shallow system, so the experience doesn't really change that much.

I'm still really fond of it. I played the shit out of it when I was a kid.

This is an example of a good concept for a remaster. Instead of remastering a game that doesn't need it, they remaster a flawed game but with good intentions, and make it 'better'. I can think of many games that are almost good, but miss the mark.

There was already a mod for that.
I will concede though that a remake would've been better than just a plain remaster.

For third person? I remember a mod that made it first person and tried to fix the squad infection. Might have also upped the amount of guys you could have on your squad, but I don't remember.

This game never needed it. It needed to be forgotten forever and it is going to be anyway. ND's obsession with it is weird. Look forward to the Soul Reaver remaster tomorrow. Now those games deserved it, not this shit.
