Yeah Shepard didn't burn up, they revived the desiccated corpse. Someone steals Shepard's body first though and tries to sell it to the Shadow Broker, but Liara gets it back. That was the plot of those Dark Horse (?) Mass Effect comics.

EDIT: OK, I think my sarcasm detector is on the blink. :M

My Shepard survived the fall into the planet's atmosphere, but that was probably because in my imported ME1 game I had level 10 Colossus armor on.

My Shepard got into one of the escape pods because she was wearing anti-retarded writing armour.
