The Colonel was happy for the first time since First Contact. Back then, after tirelessly searching the area and sustaining horrible losses against the native liveforms the scouts found the Monsoon Jungle and with it the means for prospering on this hellish planet. But the joy was short-lived, as the so-called Gaians found the Jungle an its riches short afterwards and claimed a part of it despite several stern warnings from the Colonel herself. Today, the consequences of this decision came to pass - the Colonel declared vendetta and gave orders to move against the Gaians to conquer the whole of the Jungle for the glory of the Spartans. Operation Reaper has begun.

Surely not, brethren! He kept his "armour" well-maintained and it saved his soul from corruption. Note also how he refused to allow even the slightest lie to penetrate his mind. He did not stop to think if anything said could be true, because he knew in his heart and soul that truth comes only from the Lord and His chosen Elders of Zion. Some may think themselves above the tricks of the devil, seeking to debunk arguments from unbelievers like some self-righteous University debate champion. Humble and mature Christians know better than to trust solely in their own intellect, relying instead on the wisdom of God Almighty!

Deirdre sighed.

The fall of Autumn Grove had come as little surprise. While the fledgling town (indeed, the presence of the jungle and terraforming efforts had made it one of Gaia's fastest growing and most productive cities) had been reasonably well-defended in terms of soldiers, the qualitative edge of the Spartan fascists had been decisive. Even if better-trained, the Spartan infantry was equipped with the same Unity-era firearms that the Gaian defence forces had been. What had really proven fatal had been the Spartan rovers whose impact cannons tore apart swathes of Gaian militia every volley and left their cover little more than smouldering ash. Combined with their rapid speed Deidre feared they could use the Gaian roads that connected the Monsoon Jungle to the inner Gaian heartland to launch a, Deidre paused for a moment to think back to her history lessons, blitzkreig attack before Gaia could fully mobilise.

Deidre was interrupted from these gloomy thoughts by a sudden knock at the door.

"Lady Deidre, Spartan infantry have landed not far from the outskirts of Gaia's Landing!"

Deidre gritted her teeth but outwardly remained calm as she listened to the support. The force was small and thankfully didn't seem to be reinforced by the dreaded rovers. A few options came to Deirdre's mind.

1) The issue of synthmetal armour, previously only provided to Deidre's personal bodyguards, to the wider Gaian militia. While highly effective against small-calibre gunfire and distant fragmentation, a man directly struck by impact cannon fire was left just as much of a bloody mess as if he had gone into battle shirtless

2) Recent research had meant that not only could the mindworms be captured from the native, but Gaia now possessed the knowledge of how to breed docile and obedient worms in their very laboratories. In addition the way the worms struck could level the field with the powerful ordnance of the Spartan aggressors. It seemed to make little difference whether one was equipped with a baseball bat or an industrial-power flamethrower when fighting the worms. Instead the morale and psychological condition of soldiers seemed to decide the success of a worm attack. Mentally unprepared soldiers seemed to lose any will to resist the worms and quickly turned into gibbering messes. Deidre sadly remembered that it had to be admitted that if there was one thing those gun-nut psychos weren't, it was cowards. Santiago had drilled them from birth to march, take orders, kill and die at a click of her fingers. Deidre with some bitterness wondered if that was the only way for a people to survive in this sphere of existence, while societies that strived for higher goals were simply tread underfoot by the imperialist warmongers.

3) Diplomacy. The Gaians are no warriors. Even defence of Gaia itself would be a tall order, let alone counterattack and the reclamation of the stolen portions of the jungle. While it was a shame that the westward scouting of exploration and settlement parties had been interpreted as a foray into Spartan claimed lands perhaps some sort of equitable arrangement could be reached. Alternatively perhaps the other survivors of the Unity could be called upon for assistance. Surely everyone would realise that the militant Santiago sought the subjugation of all free humans to become the helots for her Spartans. Technical and financial assistance from the [CENSORED] had already discretely arrived and was deeply appreciated by Deidre. While it was a stretch considering the size and infrastructural state of Planet, the arrival of volunteers or opening of a second front could relieve some of the pressure placed upon Gaia.

Stats at the end of M.Y. 2179:

The Spartan Federation remains the undisputed powerhouse, having both the largest population and army. They also have a nice amount of technology which they keep to themselves (not that I wouldn't, were I in the same position).

The Peacekeepers have a large territory, are developing the Uranium Flats and are building a nice economy. They have also managed to snatch the tech lead, but their armed forces are rather weak.

The Human Hive is slightly behind in terms of tech but ranks second in terms of military strength, has the largest territory and enjoys that snazzy production rate only inhuman underground dystopias can muster.

The University is doing well population-wise, but research and trade is limited by its isolation which prevents exchanges with other factions.

The Gaians have advanced infrastructure but no real military. They are the weakest at the moment and the vendetta with the Spartans looks pretty grim.

The Lord's Believers are the victims of persecution since no one wants to give them advanced weapons technology (as if anything bad could come out of it!). They thus soldier on having to make do with less.

Finally, AI-run Morgan Industries is raking in the big yehzah by running democratic/free market/wealth. The Omniventurians are doing quite well tech-wise and also have some decent defences up and running.


Oh, and the Planetary Council could be assembled by yours truly, but the vote for Planetary Governor would stand between the Spartans and the Peacekeepers. Since neither side has bribed me for their votes there is really no reason to call the election. Besides, everyone would get the communication frequency for the University which would end their isolation. Suffice it to say that the "Elders of Zion" would prefer to delay that for as long as possible.

Glorious news for all Spartan citizens, as well as all Gaians currently languishing under the brutal boot of unbelieving oppression! In light of Santiago's continued and unrepentant hostile advance into Gaian territory, the Council of Elders of Zion, elect mouthpiece of the Lord God in Heaven, interpreters of the Divine Will and spiritual shepherds of all of humanity on Planet, have most prayerfully decided to launch a pro-active campaign of new and exciting "enhanced" witnessing to enlighten the Spartans as to the profound error of their ways.

The good news of the Kingdom of God has already reached the war-torn shores of Nakhásh (known in certain godless factions as Landmass Two), resulting in the entirety of the Spartan Navy embracing the brilliant light of love and righteousness.
