Part 8: Cold Stone
Fayris comes with a brilliant suggestion: breaking up the team.
As soon as Fayris and Jaakon are gone the trap closes. Incendiary arrows come flying out of nowhere.
You should have thought more about the price you’ll pay for your actions ...
Luckily for Angela flame bro stayed behind so the ambush is quickly repelled.
Two of the thugs drop incendiary arrows which will be useful later.
Angela now needs to choose whether to follow after Fayris or Jaakon… she chooses Fayris.
Inside the warehouse will be another ambush.
I know! Hold on, I’m at your side!
After killing the first group of thugs another group will show up including a mage. Somehow Angela got poisoned here; one of the thugs must’ve been using a weapon balm.
In any case after defeating the ambush it is time to look for Jaakon.
Agreed. Which way?
Through the back gate! Then out to the harbor. If we go to the other warehouse from there, we'll cut off their escape route to the river.
In the next area it is easiest to sneak past the thugs. There’s only a patrolling mage to look out for.
Entering the other warehouse, a cutscene plays. There’s only one sinister looking mage inside the warehouse, however Jaakon comes storming in like a retart and attacks the mage.
The mage is pro, defending against Ignifaxus with Guardianum and oneshotting Jaakon with Culminatio. Of course, in the actual game all these spells take 3-4 combat rounds to cast.
Not to mention Cuminatio damage is 1d20+5, p. sure Jaakon’s HP was >30. But anyway.
Seeing Jaakon die before her eyes, Fayris takes leave off her senses. Womyn gnna womyn.
Dude’s got a point, tbh.
In any case, the mage leaves and drops a magical orb that constructs a golem out of the junk lying around. A boss fight looms.
To beat the “junk golem” Fayris summons a wolf to keep it busy and fires incendiary arrows. Angela throws stars and only attacks it directly when it’s at very low health.
Angela frees Gerlin while Fayris stands sobbing over Jaakon’s still warm corpse.
You shouldn't talk like that. It wasn't you who killed Jaakon, it was that heartless criminal.
Even though I may not have known Jaakon very well, I deeply regret that we weren't able to save him.
It is truly a hard loss to bear - he was still so young. No one should have to die like that. But we mustn't give up hope... especially not now!
Is 'Coldstone' the name of the man whom we have to thank for all this? What part does he play in this matter?
That's the big question I don't have an answer for... not right now, anyway. I don't know much about him. But I will remember his face... and his name. We’ve clashed before, during my youth.
Clashed?
Yes, it was a trivial matter during my service, an... irregularity. I can't even remember exactly what it was about. But I'll get to the bottom of it, even if I have to examine every document from my service days.
How were you captured?
Well... the actual reason I ended up being taken prisoner was a conversation behind a courtyard wall - and I was able to overhear by accident while on the way to our meeting point.
What I heard was, "That fat swine is getting greedier by the day. He wants a bigger piece of the pie. He's almost worse than the Baron! Now the chest is supposed to go back to the stronghold. Seems it was brought here by mistake."
When they stopped talking, I climbed over the wall to see what was in the chest. I was so eager to catch a glimpse of it that I didn't notice I wasn't alone on the other side of that wall. I felt a blow on the head and... woke up here.
And? What was in the chest?
I didn't get to that, more's the pity. But we still have the following clues: The initials SB were carved on the chest. I suspect that SB could be the Commandant of the Tollgate, Stitus Bloomfold.
Stitus Bloomfold, interesting. What's the plan this time?
Fayris. I want you to accompany our new lady friend here. If you see that she trusts someone, you trust that person too.
Ah, speaking of which: I'm traveling with three well-heeled merchants who are also in search of the pirates. Something extremely precious has apparently been stolen from them.
Yes, I know these gentlemen. You can tell them everything. You must go to the Tollgate and find out what the connection is between Commandant Bloomfold, the smugglers and the pirates.
Agreed. Together we'll get to the bottom of this.
Yes, we shall - It should be a laughably easy task for us to find out what that Toll Commandant is up to.
Excellent! I'll journey to Ferdok to report on the night's events and what we've found out so far. And I will do everything in my power to find out all I can about Coldstone. May Phex be with you until we meet again!
I hope you'll find some answers. Take care of yourself, Gerlin.
Next, we’re back at the Nadoret marketplace. The new main task is to report to Ardo at the Leaping Stag.
