You probably thought I'd abandoned this LP, didn't you?
I bet Spekkio thought so..
Well, just to prove him wrong, here's another update!
A couple of low-risk missions are undertaken.
And Draco secures a couple of promotions.
More rockets. I'm a compulsive completionist in games like this, I just have to research each and every available tech, regardless whether I stand to learn something useful.
The upgraded chemical grenade looks nasty though.
Ah! It seems the aliens have learned a new trick! They're now also targetting the base in Thermos!
Let's try and see if we can shoot down the battlecruiser before it reaches the target.
Well, what do you know, it worked.
Finally, we get an explanation of why the aliens are interested in this planet. It seems they need fuel for their mothership, and Esperanza is rich with it. In the UFOpedia screen, there's now an "Avonium storage" gauge, which supposedly signals game over, should it ever fill.
Which means it's supposedly important to stop these mining missions. To be honest though, I haven't seen the gauge move, and I doubt I can get a gameover by simply sitting and doing nothing.
So, Earth is enslaved, and the aliens have built a starport in the US. Handy.
And in this starport, an alien shuttle is parked. Hmm.. I wonder if a future mission will see us trying to make our way to an alien shuttle, so we can fly to the alien mothership and blow up the controlling brain creature?
...
Nah, too cliche, right? M:
We're interrupted in the contemplations of this by a rather rude attack on the Seathopia base.
The nightwolf interceptors were engaged elsewhere on the globe so I just had to accept the attack without trying an interception.
Before retaking Seathopia, we scramble for a salvage mission of the other battlecruiser the nightwolves were shooting down. Here we see DamnedRegistrations stunning a preacher leader.
Impressive.
Now we see him get shot in the back..
And he falls unconscious in the AoE of a flame attack...
With predictable results. Shot in the back by Drakron. I bet he's been taking advice from Eklektyk, but nothing can be proven..
DamnedRegistrations, your throwing skills will be missed.
anus_pounder the third also took potshots at allies, but managed to calm down before more fatalities were incurred..
For some reason, I didn't get a screenshot of Draco's promotion. Maybe I was too shaken by the friendly fire..
The next two missions are less bloody.
Donaroriak gets a spot on the transport again, now that DamnedRegistrations isn't hogging one of the two grenadier seats. He, The Thin Man the third and NewBee all enjoy promotions.
Special mentions for The Thin Man the third, as he gets a total of three promotions in the space of only two missions. Xp come faster now with the more dangerous enemies.
Even with base defences up and running, the aliens seem to have little trouble invading our bases.
So I order a second base defense facility built in all secondary bases.
Draco, Canus and The Thin Man the third all receive promotions and grow increasingly deadly.
Around about this time, I decide to start production on the modules for the Centaurus project.
The first two, the living quarters and laboratory are quickly finished. Before the landing and storage unit and distribution point can be completed, we're interrupted by more UFOs. Expecting a simple recovery mission, I scramble the transport.
Phantoms! They herald the coming of the highest tier of enemies, sporting the most deadly weaponry and they're darn tough to kill as well, as you can see from this screenshot. Thankfully, the waspkeeper armour is also improving our survivability, but still care must be taken not to expose our troops too much when clearing maps.
dextermorgan the second is promoted and schooled for throwing 'nades.
Now, this is as far as I can go with project centaurus for the moment. There's something I haven't encountered yet for unlocking the last pieces of the ship, so we'll have to be patient.
The autopsy of the phantom is quickly concluded, revealing them to be Extraterrestrials Ethereals. More importantly, this unlocks the ultimate in weaponry for research, the particle weapons.
All resources are pooled into unlocking this ASAP, and we do not have to wait long.
There's no real reason to choose to wield the pistol. Just look at the rifle:
145 damage, 180 accuracy and 30 shots in a single clip. On top of this, burst fire costs only 30% of available timeunits.
The only drawback of this weapon is that it's not capturable, we will have to produce all units ourselves, including ammo.
The particle cannon sports only half the ammo of the AKEW cannon, which also shoots almost twice as fast. The particle cannon has better accuracy however, so I will be refitting all interceptors with these babies as soon as I can free up enough technicians.
The Thin Man the third continues his ascent.
On the next mission, we encounter a new type of enemy.
It's easy to kill, but it sports a nasty flame-based AoE attack, so it's best to be flying when engaging these.
dextermorgan the second can take the second grenadier seat now should the need arise.
The ultimate in ship rockets. There's absolutely no reason not to produce and equip these. M:
It seems that units that use flame-based weaponry are more susceptible to chemical attacks and vice versa. Lucky for us, they also remain killable with regular weaponry.
Antimatter grenades... I cannot express the awesomeness.
Storyfag gets promoted to Warrant Officer, and Pope Amole joins the SS.
The ultimate in base defenses. Yet AKEW defenses are so much cheaper both to build and maintain, and take less time to build as well, so I see no particular reason (heh) to build particle defenses..
The shields however, are a no-brainer. All interceptors can carry a shield, and the only thing that differentiates the shields are how much extra hitpoints they give your interceptor. Oh, and the price, but if you're bitching about costs, you're doing something wrong.
The end of the month is upon us, and you can see we're draining cash fast, due in no small part to the scientists working around the clock. That is a problem that will solve itself shortly as you will see..
Hovertank with particle weaponry.
While retaking the invaded base, we come upon the ultimate in alien ground forces..
A mini-UFO!
These guys are no joking matter however, as they can take a severe beating, and they sport a nasty particle weapon. They're worth a nice 40xp once you do kill them though.
Eklektyk is our first Lieutenant!
Drakron is promoted to Warrant Officer, and The Thin Man the third gets to be a first class Sergeant.
To be honest, I'm not sure I will be using these improved personal shields at all, as I seem to be going through a lot of the ordinary shields in every mission. I'm not sure I'd be able to keep up with the demand, despite having 120 technicians, seeing as there's already a fuckton of other stuff they have to build, so so far I'm sticking with the basic shield, even though this is several times more effective..
Doesn't-matter rocket.. M:
The Terror floater... I'm sorry, I'm just not very terrified by this picture.. The bio-drone from TFTD worked much better if you ask me.
On the plus side however, this represents the very last thing I could research! But the centaurus is still unfinished. I guess I need to see a larger type of UFO before I can advance the game. So, until I face and shoot down a battleship instead of the battlecruisers, we're stuck on this planet.
A swarm shows up. But there's 4 battlecruisers, and I only have 2 nightwolves that I don't want to lose unless there was a decent chance that I could bring down the leader. Unfortunately, the swarm spawned on the opposite side of the globe, and the leader flew away before I could distract its escorts and attack it on its own.
NewBee is a newbie nomore. Welcome to the rank of Warrant Officer.
I let the pacifist tag along to hold the alien detector device, and the default 5xp reward for surviving a mission lets him get promoted to private.
He gets to improve his throwing skills, for throwing stun grenades..
anus_pounder the second and Artricia join the SS.
Canus too.
Here we're facing a phantom commander, and in the vain hope that capturing one such might advance the storyline, I lob several stun grenades in his blue face.
He's caught, but no new research topics unveil themselves. I guess I'll have to sit tight until a battleship shows..
And suffer intermittent attacks by battlecruisers..
I hope the next update will see us returning to Earth, even if it does signal the endgame. At present, I'm busy outfitting everyone with personal anti-gravity devices and particle rifles, while building more top-notch interceptors so I can down the battleship when it finally shows up. It's a bit tedious, and depending on how many more defense and recovery missions I have to wade through, you might get a filler update before the final missions.
