After a long road of talking to the Project Manager on LinkedIn, getting an original German hardcopy, and many dead torrents, I've finally gotten to the point where the game is semi playable for me. An absolute legend in Belgorod was the only seeder on the only torrent and allowed me to download the Russian version. The game is said to be buggy and incomplete, so I will push through as long as I can and take any free time to complete and translate a full let's play.

Intro (Eng Subs)

*Any native Russian speakers; feel free to point out mistakes in my translation*

Link to the original intro with German voice acting

Now, after the foid got our lovely orc mutt protagonist thrown off deck, it's time to look at our menus, character, and customization abilities.

Character & Customization

Abilities
Abilities.png

There are 4 groups of stats, with 8 stats each.

1. Blood Skills - Melee, armour, parrying, ranged, constitution & fire magic
2. Day Skills - Trading, meditation, regen, healing, repair, water magic, etc.
3. Night Skills - Typical rogue skills, Tactics & Earth Magic
4. Bright Skills - Mana, Magic power, intuition, faith skills, air magic, etc.

There are also combinations on the side to unlock as well, ~30+.

Character Screen
Character-Cus-1.png

Character-Cus-2.png

Character screen includes our big dick light skin orc and our inventory.

Inventory - Weapons, Armour, Potions, Other, Herbalism, Quest

Stats - Endurance, Health, Damage Bonus, Dexterity, Speed, Crits, Intelligence, Vision, Knowledge, Spirit, Mana, Magic, and the 4 magics of fire, water, earth and air. We also have our damage and protection from weapons & armour

Magic
Magic-Book-1.png

Magic-Book-2.png

Magic-Book-3.png

The magics book includes all magical abilities and alchemy potions. The magic is separated by two parts, each with 6 "schools" and 20 abilities in each (240 in total). There is a little crossover, but in general, lots of customization. Alchemy has 20 recipes at the start.

Divine Magic** - The first magic section is divided into 6 schools.
1. School of Order
2. School of Chaos
3. School of Spirit
4. School of Balance
5. School of Life
6. School of Death

There are learned

Arcane Magic - The second magic section is divided into different classes of magics named through colours, and seem to coincide with the earth/fire/air/etc. thing going on.

*If any Russian speakers could clarify the different between the sections, i.e. "магия жрецов" i "Волшебная магия", thanks - fixed**

Gameplay
Non combat gameplay gives us a top down view of our character, with point and click (no WASD). There is also a loot all button, and moving the camera is simply holding down RMB, or moving the cursor to the edge of the screen. Left click also gives the ability to pick up items and talk to NPCs.

Map

Map-2.png

The world of Vorluk in all its glory

Journal
The journal is simple, but gives lots of information and gives exposition on the character and who's important to us. It's written like Geralt's journal in Witcher 1, first person perspective from the protagonist himself and divided between "current" and "completed".

Journal.png

Journal Excerpt:
Word of Chaos - Since my childhood, I've been driven by one desire; to avenge the murder of my parents. Since my friend Netar introduced me to the belief in Chaos, I've become a warrior and a priest. Many years have passed, and the time for revenge has come. I know who the killer is and I hate him with all my soul. His name is Peltar Landorsky, second in rank in the Third Round Orders. He is considered a dangerous magician by his enemies. My belief in Chaos and my desire for justice are leading me, it's already over for him. He can't escape, I am guided by the judge himself, Ivorl, God of Chaos. He instructed me to not only take revenge, but also find the legendary item "Word of Chaos". One of his servants, the mighty Iskris, will help me in my travels.

Part 1 - End

Next time, we will talk to an orc friend at these docks and attempt to enter the city with 2 guards standing at the entrance. Will we find out who our parents were (Mom is definitely the human who got hooked on cross-species porn and found a crazed orc)? Will we find the Polak who killed them? Adventures are yet to come.

I've got it in French, I don't know if that might interest you.

And here's a short discussion of the game in the Obsidian forums, back in 2006: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/45339-search-for-the-word-of-chaos/
9 years of French and all I can say is bonjour and some other shit , amazing school system.

I'm still looking for am English copy cause it'll save me lots much time translating for the let's play (I have a shit ton of Screenshots I've just been sitting on just cause I don't have the time to manage and translate everything right now).

Did you ask the Project Manager about an English copy? I haven't found one anywhere, Ebay, Amazon, Torrent, Emule, Redump, Scene nfo, etc. etc. Nothing. I'm not even sure it ever existed.

Yeah, he wasn't even aware of other languages, including Russian.

In the Obscure RPG thread, someone posted some screenshots and I'm pretty sure I saw English for this game.

Either way, might be fun to do a translation myself in the future and upload it.

It's on the first page. Sadly, in Russian: https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads/really-obscure-rpgs.119370/
All the reviews in Mobygames are in German: https://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/world-of-chaos/mobyrank
I'm now 99% sure it was only released in Russian, German and French.

PS: Yes please, translate it!

The project manager was surprised when I mentioned a Russian version, so he either doesn't remember or the translation was done by a third party.

The Russian version I have (as you see in the video) has a dub over the German voice acting in cutscenes.

My russian is ~B2 level at best, so it's been a struggle even getting stuff together for this Let's Play because it just takes up so much time but I'll persevere through it. So, for now, all you'll have is my translations I put into the Let's Play :) Will probably grind through main story and only add in a couple of funny side quests just because of how much time this is taking and how little free time I have.

With all due respect to the parent thread (https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads/really-obscure-rpgs.119370/) and games discussed in there, World of Chaos seems to be such an awful dreck that I wouldn't spend any time at all for it if I was an OP.

Being an old Russian gamer I have some experience with shitty obscure Russian RPGs, and I'll tell ya: 'shitty obscure Russian RPG' is a mark of pure evil. Do not touch it, for the love of God.

The novels its based on are Hungarian, developed and published by Germans. Not Russian. It has no Russian voice acting, and the scenes are just some random guy who dubbed every voice himself on top of the original voice acting. Either way, its Codex, why would I withhold information about a cRPG no matter where its from. On top of that, it's a fun exercise that will further help my knowledge of the language.

Germans? It's better, though it looks like if it was really developed by Russians :)

Mother Russia had developed some very good games in the past, including RPGs (Age of Pirates series, Rage of Mages series, Space Rangers series) but when we make shit - we make it like nobody else, The Definitive Edition of Uttermost Shit, especially in RPG genre.

Part 2: Entering the City & Getting Settled
Instead of pasting in a bunch of pictures for each line of dialogue, I will mostly be recording and adding subtitles on the videos. Much easier to follow along and can also see the cinematics, voice direction/acting, camera angles, and those perfect NPC animations. Now it's time to get into the meat of the game, and in typical RPG fashion, pick up a bunch of side quests.

Fun Fact - The voice of the main character (Skandar Gravn) is the voice of German Samuel L Jackson

The Suicidal Half-Orc
We make it onto a small dock outside the city walls and are greeted by an orc, and 2 guards.

Other Dialogue Choice: "Well, if you really feel that way. Good luck!"

Getting Through The Guards

If we do not take the clothes from Kara-Horg, the guard will comment on our terrible appearance and will not let us get into the city and we have to go back to talk to him again. Thus, Kara-Horg is our saviour. Without him, the game ends right there.

Babby's First Extortion Racket (& Combat!)

Combat
Combat is turn based (turns shown in the top right, still not sure what the numbers mean however). The amount of actions/what type of actions you can perform in a turn is represented by the yellow "Action Points" bar in the top left, under the character portrait. There is a weight system to weapons as well. I was able to get in 3 hits per turn with my fists (starting level character), but only 2 hits with the knife equipped. There will come a point where I'll have to take a deep dive into the skills list. You can skip turns, or even run away from the fight. Sometimes, you can run away while being side by side fighting, but other characters who are faster/more powerful require you to run away in combat (i.e. go to a further hexagon), then you are able to exit combat. If you run into them later, they'll fight you again.

*Addendum to Leveling System: Instead of gaining a set amount skill points for leveling up, you gain some for each combat victory. Both fights so far have yielded 12 SP, so will see in the future if that's dependent on the enemies we face, the number of enemies, their level, the location we're in, or even if the amount we earn is tied to a skill. Curious to see what this does to the balance of the game.*

Rentzal
Exploring the Tavern
As with every other fantasy RPG, the tavern is chalk full of NPCs and side quests.

**I can't tell if Veylar slipped up after many questions or it's a misake. Veylar mentions a Thanatos, "when I get to him", so either he already knows who I'm looking for and is lying about it or the writers just randomly dropped a name in there. Who knows, will see.

Quests
Walking around town yielded some interesting interactions, and randomly stumbling upon information directly related to the main quest. The first is a kid being attacked by some *velvet hippos* *nanny dogs* *pibbles*, and even stumbling upon a retarded guy. There's definitely been diversity in who we've met so far.

The other choice for when finding that kid (who, for some reason, has a grown mans voice) goes as follows:
"Are you crazy? I’m not gonna touch these mutts. Who knows what kind of germs are jumping around on these things. What if they’re rabid? It’s better to run away. You can run fast, right? Or maybe not…?"

After this choice, you leave him alone and don't get the information about an Order mage searching for you. This is most likely the man we're looking for, the Polak who killed our parents.

Also managed to cement the characters beliefs a bit. He is only for Chaos, doesn't subscribe to the BS of religions, but can't fight a priest just yet because he gets crushed.

Dialogue choices which lead to a fight include:
"Whatever the goddess says, I don’t care!"
"So that’s who you are, a fake priest! I don’t need anything from you, except your miserable life!"

"I’d rather rid your church of a dozen or two jewels…in the name of help!"

Gameplay & Thoughts
After walking around Rentzal, talking to everyone I can, I've got a decent grasp of what to expect for the rest of the game:
-The controls are quite buggy. For example, zoom in/out only does it at a pixel at a time pretty much then randomly decides to work properly. The camera contolled by arrow keys is quite smooth, but randomly has a bug where you can't hold them down, only tap them and move the camera 5 degrees at a time.
-I can't find a comfortable camera angle, so I've fully top down. Can never get an angle just right to actually enjoy the look of the city.
-The city feels empty at times. No idle NPC chatter, not many people to talk to, buildings are mostly empty.
-Music is decent, if basic, but I haven't gotten bored of it yet
-Unlocked chests have jack shit in them; the game definitely forces you to build your character if you want to do things
-Some jank (I quite enjoy B film quality charm). A merchant had his greeting sentence sound like it was supposed to be for the little boy we met earlier, then switched into a deep old man.
-Atmosphere is pretty good honestly, have had a good time walking around
-Dialogue isn't the deepest, but there's personality shifts between characters shown through how they talk (not sure I showed it well with a translation). You can find people who use lots of slang and cuss words, someone who speaks in a poetic way, someone who just speaks very properly in an academic sense, basic, or even like Buga who was hard as fuck to translate. This already makes it better than dialogue in any modern bioware game.
-Exposition through dialogue/in journal has been decent overall. There's been no point where it felt jarring, each time I just thought to myself "Oh, nice, that's how it works" and moved on. Again, nothing ground breaking in this game but nothing has actively annoyed or dissapointed me (other than the camera, which I'm used to now). Witcher 3 actually has some very jarring scenes and awkwardly written dialogue just in the first part of White Orchard, so World of Chaos has lasted longer. I'm still waiting to experience the first big fuckup in dialogue.

Next time, will finish up anything in Rentzal then head outside the city walls. I purposefully went back and rejected the priests quest because I wan't to see how the game handles in game characters who are related to quests which I've rejected.

Part 2 - End

****The project manager talked about how hard he fought for this game even though they went through lots of bullshit; he's releasing some content talking about games he's worked on, so will get a backstory on World of Chaos once he gets to it. Will post it here when it happens.

I love any sort of pure Russian jank trash, it's an immense pleasure of mine. It goes beyond gaming too, I wonder what you'd have to say about the Russian music I listen to))

Oh, man, if you listen to any kind of Russian metal I'll find you wherever you are and show you what the Wrath of God truly is.

Well, maybe some examples of Russian bands in 'extreme' genres (death, black and such) can be called moderately good but I don't listen to extreme genres so much to be an expert.

90% of russian stuff I listen to is rap, the rest is just rock/alt. But the metal bands I do listen to are Arkona & Грай))

Oh my... Where is the 'Ignore the user' button here? :P

Arkona & Грай

All these 'pagan-folk-metal' bands always make me laugh. What 'folkish' is in ridiculous (especially female) 'growling', 'screeching' and all other kinds of stupid mouth-sounds? "Грай" seems to be slightly better here for including real clean folk singing.

The epitome of ridiculousness of this sub-genre for me is the band Ensiferum. They are tagged like 'viking-metal'. I vividly imagine like 'normal' vikings of old would rip these idiots to blood-eagles after having heard their 'viking' ass-singing. And idiots do not know Latin. They apparently wanted to be called 'Swordbearer' but 'ensiferum' is the neuter gender (masculine would be just 'ensifer'), so the 'true' vikings would rip them second time for such a testicle-less name.

THIS is the kinda normal would-be viking singing:

I checked this and seems like the devs are actually Hungarian, which explains why they chose to adapt a Hungarian book. However, the game seems to only have German, French & Russian releases, and even the official website was German.

There's a Hungarian podcast with one of the devs : https://iddqd.blog.hu/2020/09/07/checkpoint_6x15_world_of_chaos , would be cool to have someone listen to it and see if they tell the full story.

Interesting...I looked through my copy and can't find any Hungarians. The only names I see credited anywhere are German from the publisher Im guessing, based on the job titles. No mention of the developers anywhere.

20230917_012745.jpg

Those are the names on MobyGames as well.

Thanks for letting me know felipepepe

As for a full story, the project manager told me he'll be releasing blog posts about all of the games he's been a part of which can help not having to listen to a podcast in Hungarian lol He expressed some annoyance as to what happened with World of Chaos, some issues I'm guessing (funny considering it's a guy working for the publisher saying that) but still is proud of the game.

Damn, even on the in-game credits it's like in that manual, just says "Developed by: Brainfactor Entertainment" and then lists all the publisher staff. That's really cruel to the devs.

Is it really cruel to not be specifically associated with a turd? That aside, their website is archived. https://web.archive.org/web/20060601000000*/http://www.brainfactor.com/

And some 2003 interview about the game in Hungarian, for those who can read it or want to use a translator: https://web.archive.org/web/20050224053215/http://www.mportal.hu/?action=komment&base=ngamer&id=4023

According to some German database, "Other Side", another Hungarian studio, contributed graphics to the game.
