Nah, they are given their experience with previous FO/TES games. They are given different opinions in certain reviews and from the old FO fansites and they voluntarily make their choice to believe what "the devs say". I don't have any pity with people who voluntarily switch off their brains. They deserve to waste 50 bucks on a crappy game. The problem is that they will continue telling themselves that FO3 is awesome. Who'd want to admit falling for hype? The other problem is that they make Bethesda successful enough to keep churning out trash.

I guess that a lot of people truly enjoy a game like Oblivion where they don't have to use their brains and think too hard to finish quests. Bethesda sold a lot by making a brainless sandbox game and one that has a lot of deficiencies, even considering the kind of game they were trying to do. Noticeable level-scaling (good level-scaling is the one you barely notice), boring exploration and repetitive dungeons, ridiculous mini-games that break immersion, dumb ai.

Fallout 3 is only Oblivion 2.0 or a dumbed down Morrowind. If you look at Morrowind none of these mistakes existed. They were introduced when Ken Rolston, Michael K and Ted Peterson left Bethesda or were put away. Morrowind was a very good game except for the horrible game play that was the responsability of Todd Howard. Oblivion combat wasn't much better either. Hand to hand Close combat was a mess because of the AI. Stealth was stupidly done. The only mini-game that wasn't horrible was lockpicking.

If you compare Gothic to Morrowind, it shares the same intelligent exploration that was present in Morrowind and level-scaling is well done. Combat is simple but it is well done and fun with some interesting combos and an AI that doesn't just rush towards the player (however a bit hard to control because the game introduces pauses when you have a low skill which can be mistaken by a badly programed engine). Gothic even has something unique (that i know) of splitting the game into chapters and modifying the world in each chapter. Gothic is a way better sandbox than Morrowind and Oblivion.

With Gothic 3 they screwed up with a bad engine and unbalanced combat. If it was unbalanced to be easy it would not be a problem but it was too hard for the gamer noobe who isn't used to think too hard and can't find ways around Gothic 3 problems. It looks like underestimating the intelligence of gamers will never cause any problems.

I have to admit I was never a fan of Gothic 1,2, despite knowing people around here worship it as one of the best RPGs ever. To tell you the truth, I found it damn right awful, just because it was more annoying than fun. But since the game wasn't hyped I never needed to speak out my mind loud.

The main problem I had was with the game's combat. Too hard if you ask me, to the point it felt broken. I don't mind challenging, but when you get easily killed by some chicken like monsters, dogs and giant bees, it becomes more annoying than fun. It would be like getting easily killed by rats in Fallout, or getting killed by radscorpions, which was the first mission in Fallout, the first time they sting you. The orcs slice you down with one hit and they are not even far from the starting area. Their AI consisted of charging at you waving their huge axe. Not much you can do, except run.

It took me few days just to raise a few skills, and I wore rags for a week, while most often running away even from the easiest creatures, because I find save/load tactic a bit cheesy.

There was no character creation, and the main character does not even look cool like for example Geralt or Kain. The dialogs were nothing special, and the world didn't seem as beautiful and deep as the one in Morrowind. I am talking about the lore and history books, the variety of climates, etc. Although the characters you meet were done much better. The story also didn't seem anything special.

I bought Gothic 1,2 after I was impressed with Morrowind and I was searching for similar games. Because of the things I mentioned above, I could never get into Gothic 1,2. Just hard to the point of annoying. Gothic 2 was even harder, BTW.

The only game that ever ended up in my garbage can(litterally) was Gothic 1,2 which I regret now, because I would like to give it another chance.

Gothic 3 I actually found more playable than the first two parts, but it was still nowhere near Morrowind.

That was a bad decision of them to have the engine insert forced pauses during combat when you have low skill. It's the same thing when people play an action rpg and while the blade or weapon connects with the enemies body it fails and you get the impression that something is wrong with the engine.

That's not 100% true. They do charge at you but they position themselves at the proper distance and each enemy has is own combat tactics. Goblins for example try to run around you and hit you from the sides. Big nasty beasts always charge. Wolfs attack you in packs and try to surround you before attacking. You can't pick them one by one either because they call for other wolfs. Human foes will actually parry your blows you don't change combos and positions and will often switch between bow and sword.

I have to disagree with this. The story is better and more original than 90% of rpgs out there. I think that makes it at least above average. Plus you have chapters that change the world. I agree with what you said about Morrowind. That world is truly unique and well done. Gothic feels much more alive however because of the AI and the npc schedules. You wonder into towns and see smiths working on the forge and alchemists brewing potions.

I really don't get this. Gothic 1/2 gives you easy quests and you get xp from completing quests. You can gain enough xp to raise 4-5 levels without entering any fight and then you only have to raise your strength up to 50 and invest in one level of a sword skill to be able to beat a ton of easy monsters and get more xp. Maybe you didn't use your xp properly. Do you know how the stats work in those games? It's essential to read the manual and know this before spending your xp.

No I didn't read the manual. And I did avoid combat while trying to concentrate just on the quests, but still it was annoying just to run away from enemies when I just wish I could slam a sword in their face. I ended up climbing on rocks and trees and shooting over 100 arrows into the enemy to kill it. I think one of those easy quests made me run through some orc territory. I ended up dead quite often. Then I decided to give up. I tried it a couple of more times and always came to the same conclusion, before dumping it into the garbage can for all eternity. Wish I didn't do that though.

Morrowind was hard too until you got to decent levels, which can take you more than few weeks of playing. Gothic was so hard my tactic consisted of being a chicken most of the times. I get all that real world immersion stuff, but damn, I just want to kill a goddamn dog, not an orc. Even when I was L 5 I had a trouble with the wild dogs. They grouped just like you say and they tore me to pieces in a matter of seconds. Same with those giant bees. But hey, I managed to kill a chicken creature easily. With time I figured that you had to wait for perfect timing before attacking, but still the orcs would cut me down in a second. I didn't even manage to lift my sword.

I am not saying the game is bad or anything, because I believe what people here say about it, but maybe it is just not the game to my liking. Just like Divine Divinity.

It all depends on your stats and equipment. I can give you an easy tutorial to start well in Gothic 2.

First do a few quests for the merchants and farmers that don't require a fight. You should raise 2 or 3 levels this way and obtain enough lot to buy leather armor. You can enter the town by accepting the deal with the merchant outside and then give him in to the guards, when he asks you to do some dirty scheme.

When you have at least 40 strength and a leather armor go to a farm outside town, from the other gate. In Akyls farm you should see two mercenaries trying to get money from the farmers. Save first, then talk to the mercenaries until they attack you. The farmers are though and should win, quickly pick up the nice long sword the mercenary was using. This is your first decent weapon in the game and his free.

Next go to town and talk to an hunter near the trading market and ask him to hunt with you. With your long sword and his help you should be able to kill a shadow beast and an Ork easily.

Finally with the Ork weapon you can become an apprentice with the smith and a citizen of the town. From this point forward it should be a piece of cake if you keep pumping up your strength two-weapon skill and trading for better weapons and armor. I suggest you join the Mercenaries later and carry on with them. They have the best fighting equipment and the best trainers.

PS: Ask Lares on the docks and he will escort you to the Mercenary camp. It's better to have a fighting companion. ;)

Orcs are supposed to be insanely hard in that game. I didn't even defeat one without help until Chapter 4 (you need really good armor to have a chance). But the dogs and goblins should be handleable at level one. Maybe you missed the knife at the beginning? I did my first time and got killed by everything due to no weapon

Bethesda may have started making games out passion rather than money, but when they realised they could actually make a fuck-ton of money, and that they could make more money by making shittier games, their 'passion' shifted a little.

They're not making more money with shitty games. Morrowind sold quadrillions despite being very unusual. If Oblivion sold more, it's because it's newer, had a successful game Morrowind before it and was a launch title for the new (shit) Xbox. Also, Bethesda bribed seemingly everyone. Do you actually believe anyone going "Oh man, this game doesn't have a minigame. I think I'm going to pass." They added all of the idiocy either because they have no talent or actually believe in the words of some suit with no idea about games and only suppositions to back his words.

Money comes from artists reacting to social problems and satisfying these new born needs. When people were living in shit conditions, working all their time in a factory and spending the rest in a pub, when there were no wars and a centralized, unchangeable rule, Tolkien came in and offered adventure and a new life, more adhering to instincts, and became an immediate success. Now we have only suits staying traditional and dumbing down the escapism level, thinking everyone has an IQ of 70. People will get tired(or already are based on the declining PC sales) because their subconscious needs are not satisfied with the shit they are offered.
