You know the funny thing? Having this kind of shameless plug by a NPC isn't that much different than their stupid whack-a-barrel for loot system. Who could forget/forgive that? I played the original DS with a friend Co-Op roughly 2.5 times before it totally removed my will to live. And yes HE talked me into getting it so that we could play it on-line. Anyway, while playing it I remember the huge number of barrels and crates placed everywhere just begging to be broken open and looted... ah, the fond memories.

Now that was a great game... and I'll bet the current expansion has the same great design feature. Am I right? Why doesn't anyone get pissed about that? :? (Just playing the Devil. No, not his advocate... the Devil himself.)

Rise UP! ...fight the whack-a-barrel loot system... it is not a great cRPG design feature. Stop putting it in every damned "best RPG evar"!

Barrels full of loot are ridiculous. Everyone knows loot should be in properly locked chests which do not have a key to them and much be picked by a licensed thieves' guild member, and cannot be opened by any other means or in fact moved in any way whatsoever.

Well personally I think we should be congratulating the developers for dramatically improving the number and quality of dialoge options over the original DS...

And this is just the beginning. It will get much worse very fast. Just imagine how much money is there in Loading screen advertising...

Latest Oblivion add-on, only $5.99!
Tired of not finding the fat loot you're looking for? Well with the Radiant Barrel system, the loot comes to you! Randomly generating barrels with specially tailored magical items appropriate to your character level along your path as you move through [whatever the name of Oblivion's setting is], the Radiant Barrel system ensures that you no longer break the epic immersion by having underpowered weaponry.

I'm convinced that the goal now for the entertainment industry is to sell products which are themselves nothing but advertising. The game is an advert for the film which is an advert for the game, soundtrack, etc.

This is pretty much the case in popular music, most of it is now simply advertising jingles. So the actual song is nothing more than an advertisement for itself, given that it's composed with the exact same philosophy of a jingle - sales, not expression.

Anyway, congrats DS team, you must be so proud!

To quote Pinky Becroft from Machinegun Fellatio "I don't write songs anymore. These days i just write ring tones"

Oh noes!!! The people who make games would like to make money by selling them!!!! They think someone interested in one game might be interested in a similar game, so they target them with an ad!!! TEH Evil!!

If Dungeon Siege were a real RPG, you could complain about breaking the immersion, but seriously . . . it's Dungeon Siege. It's not the first time it has been done, and I am sure it will not be the last. This one just happens to be done without much subtlety or humor, but again, it's Dungeon Siege. What do you expect?

Oh noes!!! The Codex would like to critically discuss a shameless, embarrassing and monumentally game-disrupting advertisement in the middle of a fucking NPC dialogue!!!! They think it's worthwhile commenting on this in the context of the overall trend towards idiotic commercialism in RPGs!!! TEH Evil!!

If The Codex were the ESF, you could complain about 'teh haters', but seriously . . . it's The Codex. It's not the first time it has been done, and I am sure it will not be the last. This one just happens to be done with the usual subtlety, humor, and outright rancour. But again, it's the Codex. What do you expect?

In other words, you are a moron.

Pay your royalties to Terry Pratchett! :D

In any case, this is pretty lame. It's like firing up Oblivion, going to a horse stable, asking the guy about horses, and getting the reply that you can go online to Bethesda.com and purchase horse armor for a low $3.99 or something! Immershun!1

Doesn't matter if it's been done before or even to this extent. It's still lame.

Referencing a cheat code for a different game on another platform as a special reward for something you've done in a game is just.. stupid.

This actually didn't bug me much when I saw it, since I alreay have a PSP and am planning to get the DS2 game for it.

But I can certainly see why it would be called shameless - I was constantly irritated playing the SOCOM PSP game when PS2 'links' popped up (you have unlocked something on the PS2 version!) ...

But the interesting thing is that the SOCOM cross-ads didn't cause any stir, while this has people whooped up in a frenzy ... what is up with that?

I'm sure it did create a stir in a few places elsewhere, just not here. Given that PC gamers are getting more and more console port games these days, that might drive this stink a little higher than a PSP->PS2 cross advertisement.

True enough ... perhaps it is my reaction that is more interesting. While I was highly annoyed at SOCOM I had no issue in DS2 because it actually was something that interested me.

This kinda reminds of the Loom ad inside Monkey Island ;)

Yeah, but that was MEANT to be funny.

Here, they are actually trying to sell you somthing.

Don't think they were. Why did they mention "award winning Brian Moriarty" then? As if the "typical" Monkey Island player would know who Brian Moriarty is.
