<A href="http://www.worthplaying.com/">WorthPlaying</a> has a <A href="http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=24366">little bit of info</a> about <b>NeverWinter Nights 2</b>, including concept art, a feature list, and a summary of which the following is a part:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote>Even in this darkest hour, hope remains. A mysterious relic is borne to Neverwinter in the hands of a lone hero so that its secrets may be unlocked - secrets that carry the fate of all the North. So begins an epic tale of shattered alliances, noble acts and dark deeds to be told across the Realms for generations to come.</blockquote>
<br>
There are four keys to unlocking the mysterous relic's secrets and four directions out of town!

Sounds like a rip-off from the ending of Night Watch, heh.

More Lord of the Ring-esque to me, I think.

Gandalf's voice: "Even in this darkest hour, hope remains; hope not in the sword of some giant warrior or in some noble enterprise, but in the most unlikely of places. A hobbit..."

I'd love to play a sequel where you weren't out to save the world again. It leaves me feeling completely hollow, because you saved the world the first time, yet a year later, the world is about to be destroyed/taken over/eaten AGAIN?

Can't they make it about a personal quest, your character's quest for revenge, etc... something a bit more interesting?

Assuming this isn't just PR pushup, that feature list includes...
# Recruit up to three companions to assist in your adventures. Improved party control allows for more dynamic tactical decisions in combat and more personal interaction.
Does this mean better scripts, vague commands for companions and/or total control over NPCs ?
# Rediscover familiar locations and meet old friends from the Neverwinter Nights series.
So old NWN NPCs are returning. For someone who hasn't played the game more than an hour, did I miss some good NPCs ? Like in BG series ?

Out of pure boredom what exactly was the story in NWN?

I only got up to the point where you've got the waterdavien crap and done this ritual thing and the obviously bad guy who can't be the bad guy because it's just too obvious that he is the bad guyis actually the bad guy... so what happens next?

NWN OC story:

Act I : Plague in Neverwinter.

<plague runs rampant, killing billions>

Neverwinter: "We have the cure!

<Neverwinter is attacked by assailants unknown>

Neverwinter: "No, wait, we don't have the cure!"
Neverwinter: "damn"
Neverwinter: "Hey you! N00B! Find the cure!"

<player finds the cure ingredients, AND hints of a conspiracy... ooooohhhh... plague may not have been random aftter all... very mysterious>

Neverwinter: "yay! We made the cure!"
Traitor: "Ha! I steal your cure! You suck!"

<Traitor exits stage left>

Neverwinter: "We gonna kill y'all! Hey you! Not-So-N00b! Bring us that traitor. And bring us his friend, too, while you're at it! We'll kill him, too!"
Neverwinter: "Raargh!"

Act I, part 2

<player apprehends traitor>

Neverwinter to Traitor: "Burn, foo!"
Neverwinter to Traitor's Friend (aka The Dupe): "Hang, foo!"
Aribeth: *sniff!* (... He was just trying to help...) *sniff*

Act II: Where Oh Where Has my Little Cult Gone?

<player seeks for more reliable information on Traitor's Cult, watches Aribeth spiral into madness from watching her lover (Traitor's Friend introduced in Act I) swinging from a tree>

Player: "Found 'em, Boss! There they are!"
Neverwinter: "Get 'em!"

Act II, part 2

Player: "I got 'em... "
Neverwinter: "Cool!"
Player: "... BUT WAIT! There's more..."

<Aribeth turns traitor, marshals an army on behalf of Traitor's Cult to attack Neverwinter, The City That Hanged Her Friend>

Neverwinter: "So that's it, eh? That's not too bad..."
Player: "BUT WAIT! There's more..."

<Traitor's Cult seeks Ultimate Power in the form of Ancient Artifacts of Powere: aka The Words. They've got one already, need the other three to win.... in theory>

Act III: Word Up.

Neverwinter: "Find us the artifacts! Not because we know what to do wit' 'em, but 'cause the bad army want's 'em"

<player finds the three remaining artifacts>

Player: "Finally got 'em all, Boss!"
Neverwinter: "Cool! Doesn't matter though. Neverwinter's DOOMED! anyway. Aribeth, leading the Traitor's Cult's Army (aka Luskan's Army) is attacking! Woe is us..."
Player: "But WAIT! There's more...."

<player discovers that the Ultimate Power the Traitor's Cult wanted (aka The Creator Race... time travelling lizardfolk who've been napping for about 10,000 years) will destroy the world as they know it. Traitor turns out to be no more than a frothing madman, a tool of the Lizards in thei quest to return to their former position of world dominance>

Neverwinter: "Bummer, dude. Let's head back anyway. We might be able to figure somethin' out with those Artifacts you got us..."
Player: "Ok!"

Act IV: Of Invaders and Stewed Mages

Neverwinter: "Army's a-knockin' on the doors. You! Hero! Make 'em stop bothering me. Givin' me a headache, they are."
Player: "Sure thing, Boss!"

<player defeats Siege golems et. al, and earns Neverwinter a reprieve from the fighting. Aribeth may get herself killed, or may deliver herself up to Neverwinter for justice (vaporish wench...can't make up her mind)>

Neverwinter: "That's better."
Player: "I'm baaaad!"
Neverwinter: "But wait! There's more..."

<Time travelling lizardfolk are on the verge of waking up and destroying the world>

Player: "Bad news, boss"
Neverwinter: "Yup. Need you to sneak into their bedroom and off 'em all. Sorry. No other way to save the world."
Player: "OK!"

<player uses Ye Olde Ancient Artifacts to enter the lizardfolk's sanctuary, kills 'em all>

Neverwinter: "Yay! We win!"
Player: "Now where's my money?"

****

A little sarcastic, maybe, but the elements were all there for a pretty good story. It's just the execution I found lacking.

What was the thread about, again?

When one starts off their post by lying (ro the polit way of syaing it exaggeration); it's well documented fact that the rest of it will also be full of shit. Next.

A good summary. The plot sucked hard but I have positive memories about some quite interesting locations, e.g. the one in which you traveled through time.

Well documented is it? Well documented by whom? Even if that were true, the best lies are the ones that are concealed by truth, after all.

And of course I'm full of shit. Look where we are.

Next.

When Feargus explained they were going to focus on the single player campaign and look back at older titles like the Ultimas to give them inspiration, it gave me hope. Obsidian should come up with a decent story if they are given the full time. Add that with the fact they plan on fleshing out the NPC’s and adding a world map and using Neverwinter as a base of operations, it sounds like it shouldn’t have the negative aspects that the OC had. And, it would be almost impossible to not create a better story than the OC. If not, then I will lose all faith in Obsidian.

Even though I loathed the get me 4 objects to continue the plot, the thing I’m most worried about is the graphics. I hated having to take ramps to go up or down in elevation, it felt so fake. Hopefully this horrid idea is removed with the updated graphics.

"And, it would be almost impossible to not create a better story than the OC."

You should play more games. Tons of games have worse stories than the OC - IWD2, TOEE, GB series, DS, Wizardy series, ES series, M&M series, SOU, and the list goes on,a nd on, and on.

There's no need to use hyperbole.

Try as I might, I could never get past act three. Not because it was hard, but because the story became less and less compelling. Basically act 2 bored the crap out of me. If their "base of operations" is like port last, then we're screwed. They might as well have transported you from your base to the dungeons, since there was little opportunity to expand on the main story through exploring, there were a few mediocre side-quests that I didn't care about.

I wonder if alignment will actually affect the game in any way this time around. NwN had bad people just getting more money. Where is the lust for power, and subsequent rewards. Save a town from some terrible fate, they crown you king and offer men at arms for your disposal. Recruit a horde of orcs and pillage a town, forcing them to submit to your will and demanding tribute from the surrounding fiefs.
