So it wont run on win2k ?

damn it sure looks that way. Not that I have much over the minimum sys req anyway - a bit more ram would probably put me over the top. I *really* don't want to go swapping OSes though. Well looks like it'll be a while even if Oblivion does turn out to be halfway decent.

I'd be VERY surprised if it doesn't run on W2K, since it and XP are so similar under the hood.

I'm guessing that the recommended specs are fairly typical of 'next gen' titles...

As far as the minimum specs go: there is a big difference between the performance of the early low end dx9 cards and, say, a 6600GT. Does 'minimum spec' actually imply anything about the performance of the game other than that it will start?

Yeah, I'm gonna take money out of the collection plate down at my ministry and upgrade just to play this game. Maybe I'll put my doctorate to good use as well. I ALWAYS WONDER WHAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY THINKING OF ME DURING MY SERMONS LOLZ!!12

My roomate has an FX5500 AGP 4x 128mb Direct X 9.0 compatible card (he's obviously not a gamer), and he absolutely cannot run Doom 3 or HL2.

What? I have a GeForce 2 and I still got Half-Life 2 to run.

In a related note, according to the March PC Gamer, it's slated for a February release.

You may begin your "IF THE DEVS DON'T SAY IT, IT AIN'T SO!!!" shouting down now.

Ehem..."IF THE DEVS DON'T SAY IT, IT AIN'T SO!!!"

But seriously, are you going to stand by that comment when it's released in June? However it is likely that it may have hit gold already now that they've started releasing more specific information so who knows?

Yes, but HL2 wasn't developed by Bethesda.

Uh, if you carefully read the post that I quoted the guy said his roommate had an FX card but couldn't run HL2....to which I replied that it must be a mistake since I have a GeForce 2 and I still got it to run.....

...no mention of Bethesda....

If these really are the system requirements, it's gonna sell like ass on the PC.

People do play games below the "recommended" hardware... Besides, the real cash will be with the Xbox 360 sales.

I don't think those specs are really all that high, they're actually lower than what I expected. The recommended vid cards are 2-3 generations old now, with the X1900XTX coming out in couple of days. Though to be fair, I think 'recommended' probably means 800x600 at 30fps, which you can hardly call good.

I still think that the CPU is going to be the most important component as far as getting it to run well goes. The 3ghz intel figure really doesnt tell you much since ghz is such an unreliable performance guileline these days. I'm thinking anything that's an AthlonX2 will work out, or a single core processor above a 3200+ or FX-51. Intel isn't really a good choice for gaming anymore anyways, I'm not sure why they'd use one for sys req's.

I'll probably end up buying this game, but it'll be late this year or early next when I can get current top end equipment for a reasonable price.

HL2 supports even directx7.1 cards if they are fast enough to run the game. However Oblivion uses pixel shaders and parallax mapping for eveything so there's no option in here.

I wasn't talking about Oblivion, I was responding to what some guy said about how his roommate couldn't run HL2 on a GeForce FX, like I just explained to Chefe three posts ago

I have an Athlon XP 2400+, 1GB RAM, and an ATI 9800 Pro. If I buy this game (much much time after release), I expect it to run fine. I have an Asus MoBo which is freaking great. Many people don't think of the MoBo in all of this. It is a VERY important piece of hardware.

And i was adding that hl2 can even dx7 games. The Oblivion remark was just for the people who where wondering why Oblivion needs such high tech requirements. Just because i quote you doesn't mean it applies only to you.

My first Post!! Long time lurker...

I'm in shock. This is the first time I actually have a system that makes the recommended list. An A64 X2 3800+ overclocked to 2.6 Ghz, EVGA 7800 GT (I have an EVGA SLI Motherboard but only 1 card - it was a cheap package deal). Wonder if I can play it at 1920x1200 (dell 24" widescreen). if I forgo the antialiasing, etc. Or will it chug at that resolution... We will see... I'm too cheap to double the 7800gt up...

I just meet minimum with ATI 9800 pro, 512 mb of ram and 2.4 ghz pentium 4. But it does not really matter, I have no intention of even spending $19.95 on this crappy tech demo.

OK, who created an alt because they didn't want to admit to being a graphics whore with their leet set up?

I think my 5700 will still handle it, though I keep planning on getting a new card. How much longer till the 7800 gets cheap? I can't imagine spending more then $200 on a card. OK, I can imagine it, but then quickly laugh until something hurts.
