Awwww shit...my bad, those last few words probably read as though I'm targeting you (Infinitron) in a really cuntish manner when my ire was directed at those "jerks" who unfairly criticize specialized titles in a ridiculous fashion. For example, outside the RPG genre, folks that shit on Serious Sam because it doesn't have much to do besides shootin' loads o' d00ds in extremely fast and hectic encounters. Those types, that can't realize every game in a genre (or in the world) might not be tailored to them.

Well, I disagree.

I'm curious as to why. Discussing the element of "pacing" might make for interesting reading/posting, given that it's a word used so often in game critique, yet still seems to be amorphous in meaning, lacking a solid definition. Or maybe I picked up a case of contagious brain-fog on a jaunt through GD.

Don't worry, I understood it as what you intended.

Well, by "pacing" I don't mean "I wish this type of game was actually another type of game" - although ambitious games can mix gameplay from different "genres" to achieve the desired effect. It's more about slowing down occasionally. Even the most satisfying gameplay will get tiresome if repeated too often. For an example of this in a wholly different sort of game, go read some Thief 1 vs Thief 2 arguments.

Perhaps having "different variations of combat" is enough to keep you interested, but I just don't think D&D, with its all-important rest cycles, is really meant to be a non-stop gauntlet. Stopping to refuel and do stuff in peaceful areas is part of the experience.

Yes what a harsh life of a game designer who gets to work on one of his dream projects.
He's directly stated PoE isn't a dream project of his.
New Vegas was and this is still what he looked like at the end

Expect plenty of choice in how you deal with individual encounters, too. Sawyer uses the example of guards protecting a sacred dungeon you need to explore. “You can trick them, talk them out of it or intimidate them,” he says. “But the default is to just walk up to them and kill them.” It’s good to have options.

There are a number of drain-oriented wizard spells named for their inventor, Concelhaut, ranging from levels 1-3, and several other necro-ish spells at higher levels.

Can't believe how obsessed you guys are with Sawyer. He's not the only guy working on this game.

He's just the main person behind game design and world creation who also happens to be the face of the project.

What happened to that Adam Brennecke guy? Was he fired?

he was the producer and (iirc) the technical lead, but the producin roles have been largely taken over by brandon adler now.

He's still executive producer and Lead Programmer. Brandon hasn't taken over everything.

Another bit about spells:

Maker-named spells make up about 1/3 to 1/4 of the wizard spell list. Concelhaut and Minoletta are the most prolific.
