Roguey, just out of curiosity, could you give me an example of something where you disagree with Josh?
I bet she doesn't like his reasons for having traps in PE.

Wait, wait, wait....

Is what Rake said really true? there is no medicine?

No FUCKING MEDICINE IN A WORLD WHERE THERE ARE GUNS?

It must be trolling or some kind of weird joke, right?

Not so. Healing magic is out. Some(few) civilizations have (wheellock)guns, but no printing press or anything trylly advanced. Some kind of medicine will exist, but nothing that ingame will restore health.

Grab the Codex by the pussy
Oh shit, it finally happened... I got P:E confused with T:ToN.

Don't forget intact orbital space stations.

Still and all, Grunker, using "MAGIC MEDICINE" as a hyperbolic counter when the topic of discussion is a world filled with magic is silly. It's a pure mechanics choice, and whether someone likes it or not is down to personal preference.

Huh? I agree completely, that was the entire reason for my hyperboled counter.

Except for the personal preference part. You obnoxious relativist.

Oh, well ... healing magic can be out. Especially something as we know it from IE games. Horrible nonsensical crap.

I was talking about medicine itself. As a scientific discipline as we know it. (not on the same level ffs... but on same principles)
Because thats what you said in that post before.

But P:E wont have any healing, or medicine.

However, if technology advanced to basic flintlock rifles and guns - and there is medicine (as there should be), then there must be cures and "doctors" with knowledge how to heal simple wounds and sicknesses.
Because if there arent then all those races would die out.
Every wound would fester, every single small problem would lead to gangrene, almost every sickness would kill.

and there is no way around that.

We had medicine (of sorts) in fucking Sumeria.

NO INSTA-HEALING MAGIC MEDICINE?!?

WHY I NEVER
Is that the only medicine you know about?

There is One Sawyer and Roguey is His messenger.

but seriously sawyer has accumulated a decade of experience in how to design cRPGs, it's not surprising that he's Right (capital R) a lot of the time

To heal gunshot wounds in a reasonable timeframe, it would have to be magic/technobabble medicine, yeah. When he says "The is no medicine in P:E" he mean there are no easy means of healing damage, not that doctors simply do not exist in that universe.

Well excuse me!

When someone says hey there is no medicine or healing i tend to take that as it was said to me. literally.
And its more then great that there is no fast healing or instant healing - and that should mean there wont be any healing by "resting" too, which is confirmed... right? only stamina regenerates.

unlike you newfags :P i still think of medicine in terms of realistic medicine, not in terms of next gen insta healing and health regen popamole bullshit :P

Everyone is a medic and they patch themselves/each other up while resting.
:troll:
is it medicine if they dont touch?

So some civs have wheel locks, but nobody has a printing press? Weird

Resting is so problematic in these games where time is a meaningless resource that they should have axed that (particularly if they are dropping the Vancian stuff and forswearing "simulationism"). Make money or something else that isn't inherently about spending time (an infinite resource) the thing you spend to heal out of combat, i.e. you need to buy jugs of healing salve or something. Those kind of "thread the needle" mechanics where you have to spend something to get more of it are fun in RPGs.

You need another element to compensate the fact that you could regain health *for free*; an obvious solution would be to disable resting in dangerous areas such as dungeons and unexplored caves. Another solution would be to introduce hunger: you can take your time to explore and rest when needed, but you've to feed your PCs with 'rations' to keep them strong and fit.

Its news to me. In this form.
A game that doesnt have a single healing item? A setting, a world without any medicine? Thats a bit radical - dont you think?
I mean an RPG of the "old school" vibe, inspired by IE games?

Thats just preposterous. No poultices, no bandages, no stitches, no...folk medicine and ... herbs?
Its health regen ffs... even if its done through stamina and resting.

There could be at least a thin excuse of "they have simple medicine and items of healing but you cannot actively use them and they are spent while you are -resting- and healing".

They aren't quite dropping Vacian, as there are still per-rest abilities.

I like a system where in the field healing is a temporary solution to tending to wounds, where you loose "permanent" hitpoints unless you are tended by more advanced medicine (doctors) and an extended period of rest.

Well, yes... me too. But if there is literally no medicine... i...i...

No, no no... this is the codex. You guys are utter unreliable narrators, the lot of youze!
I dont believe a thing you all say!

Wheres that formspring password...

Common Mortality
Project Eternity's world is one with limited medicine and medical understanding. Unlike many fantasy settings, there is very little access to curative magic. Remedies for health problems often have only a palliative or placebo effect at best, owing their continued use more to folk beliefs and tradition than any basis in scientific methodology. Though soul-based magic has helped the great exploring cultures from suffering massive pandemics and has helped some individuals overcome illness over the long-term, there is no quick magical "cure" for disease or illness. Most people go through life and death in the ordinary way -- unless they put themselves in harm's way, that is.
