I had great hopes for this game, since I'm a total fanboy of GoT game. Turns out, this is not GoT.

I played some hours too, and I'm totally raging. This game got the new #1 position of "crappiest combat ever", a title that Witcher 1 was holding for so long.
You just keep spamming the same 2-3 abilities, and that's nothing new, if not that every time you want to use one of your abilities you have to shift through menus and menus. I had to bring down the difficulty to easy to just to make the combat shorter, I couldn't endure it.

But then, I already endured horrible combat and interfaces in the past just to see the rest of the game, problem is here... there is nothing hooking me to the game. The first hours in the game (I didn't pass the wall yet) are just a series of fetch and kill quests through corridors. Corridors that are on par with DA2. I see no story so far, it's just an orc trying to pass a wall for his big mission to save humankind orcs from tiranny.

I don't know, should I keep playing? There are redeeming qualities ahead or it's safe to uninstall?

If you don't like the story and combat by the end of act one that's unlikely to change further in the game.

Thanks for the advice.

It's no loss, original Risen was shit.

Yeah, you're right.

Original Risen was fine up until the last act or so. Don't be such a drama queen.

I thought it was a well-known fact I genuinely hated it. I like to mention it sometimes, to see if the "Summon Darth Roxor" spell still works.

We all must have some bastions of self-righteousness in this place. Mine is hating Risen and Arcanum.

God damn it I broke down and bought this for $20 (TWENTY!) dollars. Combination of Sser's praise and my surprisingly large amount of enjoyment of Cyanide's GoT RPG (Thus far, still playing) pushed me over the edge.

Well, that and the fact that Cyanide doesn't drop the prices on their games much. Maybe they'll get desperate and Orcs and Men will hit $10 in a month or two, but I'll risk it I guess. Clearly I SHOULD buy this for $20 because I still have that $7 in Steam wallet hatmoney sitting there, and if I didn't buy this I'd clearly use it on something foolish like $20 Skyrim DLC!

I can barely keep up with all the games I got during the last sale -- why on Earth are you acquiring more at mediocre to bad prices?!?!

I didn't buy that $5 pack of Dawn of War DLC to pad my Steam account. That called for spending $20 on a different game as a reward!

Though really it was a dumb idea. I could've played Risen and/or Gothic 2 and/or the Drakensang games and waited for a cheaper price on this, I was just overwhelmed to temporary goodwill toward Cyanide.

The fact that you haven't played Gothic 2 yet is criminal. You should do it and make a Let's Play of it right now.

I'm amazed at all the goodwill GoT is suddenly getting. I thought it was extremely mediocre at best?
Depends what you expect of it. It's basically a popamole Bioware RPG done right with very little padding. You aren't wading through tons of trash combat encounters, you aren't wading through tons of trash dialog options, and (Thus far anyway) I'm getting a kick out of the story. It does seem to be leaning on "HEY GUYS THIS IS GAME OF THRONES! INCEST! RAPE! WHOOOOOOOOOORES!" a bit much, but honestly I'm still enjoying the writing more than most RPGs.
Oh, and about the combat, like someone (I think Sser? Too lazy to double check) said in this thread one good thing about it is things can go pear shaped easily, but if you use your few abilities well you can get through fairly quickly and painlessly. It's definitely not tactical Monblutian combat by any stretch of the imagination but it's much more entertaining than A for awesome.

GoT and OOM are both carried by their characters and writing -- which I believe is exceptionally strong for their being video games. I've been wondering who exactly it is, because I think it's some if not the best in the business right now. Gameplay in either game is not all that amazing, but it basically does the job. Like MHC said, the combat can be simplified by managing your abilities correctly. OOM is the more linear of the two, but I didn't care because I love orcs. I'm pretty sure both games didn't exactly have a lot of resources backing them up. They're not AAA-games, they're just strong in areas money can't really buy.

So, is it a good game?
I'd say Game of Thrones definitely is, provided you're a storyfag and don't mind a linear story.* I'm enjoying the combat too, but it's not really worth recommending the game on by itself. Bit surprised I'm liking it as much as I am really, I tend to lean more on the mondblutian side of the scale.

*I'm assuming there aren't big C&C moments later. Thus far the only C&C I've noticed is some relatively minor dialog reactions to previous actions taken. For example, I was an asshole to a brothel's matron and she called me on it when I came back later. And it appeared I could've gone through without being a dick the first time. No game implications from that from what I could tell. There are also minor pieces of stat-C&C where you get traits depending on your actions. Torturing a guy to death for information might give you a permanent 2% boost to crit chance for example. All of those have been about that small so far.
