Yea, you are pretty much locked in a role of Good.
However, Paragon is Lawful Good, stright as someone who has a stick up his ass, and Renegade is Chaotic Robin H(G)ood, doing good things for the lulz, and not minding getting his hands dirty on the way.
That's simple indeed. It's not as you can become 'Teh ultimate EVIL!!1' and rule nations with necrophily.

"Hi, I'm the good/evil status bar."

False.

"Yea, you are pretty much locked in a role of Good."

Not true. The only thing you ar elocked into is being against Saran, and the machines. Everything else is up to you.

You are locked in being the 'hero' aka protaganist which does NOT mean good.

"from game developer that used to make good RPGs"

That's hialriously funny consideirng that ME has more quality role-playing than earlier BIO games espicially the two that the Codex sucks dick on (that being the Bg series). One can argue that BG2 is a better game and make sense; but arguing that it is a better RPG is just plain retarded.

I perfectly agree with Volourn. I haven't played Mass Effect, but just from what I've heard it has way more role-playing than the BG series.

Define roleplaying. (No really. What's roleplaying for you? Dialogue choices that depend on stats? Be careful with your answer.)

Being allowed choices, through dialogue or not, that define your character.

in ME you rarely have choices (in the meaning of ones that will change something and won't lead you to the same response in dialogues) - and almost never - the ones that will lead you to a different outcome. except for romances - now there you can tell that ugly blue chick to fuck off. though you will have only like one chance to do that. if you will lose it - you saw the screenshot

Not really. This one bothered my as well. You cant be *really* bad here. It's more like being soft or tough. The problem with ME planned as trilogy meant that you've to finish this first part in a certain way. You couldnt stand by the "bad guys" (Reapers), you always are the saviour. It doesnt bother me that much, but I cant help but recall KOTOR where final choices were much more meaningful (rule the galaxy as Darth Revan... Cant compare it to different ways of attacking the enemy ship). Oh well, waiting for part III.

It would make zero sense if you could join or stand by with the Reapers from what I learned about Mass Effect.

"Why yes, evil robotz who want to kill me and to whom I am nothing, I sure want to serve you!"

Yeah, it would be like a Russian general joining the Nazis because he was "teh evil".
That's the thing about international (or galactic) wars, you fight for whatever side you happen to be on, no matter what kind of person you are.

Except that on at least one occasion Saren, who was a Spectre (super-spy of da goverment) who turned baddie, beckons to you to join him (before the duel on the planet you nuke). Obviously you can't. Or maybe I remember it wrong, I'm ill right now. The point is it shouldn't be impossible because others did. The Reapers need people to do some groundwork before they can totally rape everyone.

Oh come on! I didn't even play the game, but obviously the Reapers aren't interested in making allies; they even use Saren under mind-control because they just don't care.

So if you do join them you should get a "The Reapers mind control you. Game Over." screen, and I doubt anyone wants that. Come on! What's up with this new Codex fad of having to be able to join everyone, especially the nemesis? Just because it's in Arcanum and because you can game over in Fallout doesn't mean it has to be a mandatory feature in every game. Mass Effect is a popcorn ride; it doesn't need this choice to be potentially fun. RPGs aren't about choices and consequences (though they're fun and help).

I'd rather have diverse options in how to deal with this nemesis, with appropriate consequences - say being evil-ish at one point might exterminate the enemies on one planet, while being good will allow them to escape, possibly to return later and kill some more people.

Seeing as how ME is a planned trilogy, I would rather have it provide me with options that can realistically carry on over to the next two games. What's the point of FO's "join the EVIL master" option when it's completely ignored in FO2 which just pretends you finished the game the "right" way? In the context of the series, it's an absolutely meaningless choice with no consequences. ME's different endings on the other hand actually look like they'll have an effect on the next game.

And thus Jasede spoiled ME for everyone.

I would've liked if you could have joined the baddies, doing all the evil shizzle you see them doing and then later realise the Reaper's mind-controlling capabilities (its a gradual process apparently). I'm pretty sure Saren joined the evil people first before getting mind-controlled. There's that queen chick too who iirc was trying to go undercover or something but ended up mindcontrolled.

Yes, it does. The game is boring as hell, the only laughs coming from the Renegade choices you can make. The only interesting parts are where you have to choose what happens to you party members, or Wrex etc. The best one is deciding that the Council is secondary and seeing them blown up. If the gameplay were completely linear I would've quit pretty darn quick.

Great answer

Putting your stupidly biased description of it aside, how is it not a valid answer? Saren and the geth were enough for the Reaper to do what needed to be done, why would the Reaper care about you or any other shmuck that wanted to team up with them?

BTW, why can't I join the rats in Fallout? Or the Deathclaws?

I have no idea what Reapers cared about since i haven't played the game. My point was that you are trying to excuse one flaw of the game with another, even more retarded one. They shouldn't have included evil robotz that kill everything each 50.000 years in the first place.
