They really don't differ all that much (and at first You have no access to tribal clans, that are kind of unique). The differentiating factor is mostly the starting location (and it is also affected by random resource spawn, so can vary from amazing to worthless). Shang is straightforward, but I would pick something more interesting like Qin (That is quite remote, has more powerful army and special qin mixed foot unit, the lackluster research can be alleviated by encountering sages and philosophers on the map that give you permanent bonuses), or Han (which can become an economic powerhouse, has unique crossbow levies, but you lack in combat power). Games can take some time, so I wouldn't bank on having too many playthroughs - don't leave the interesting stuff for the last, especially that You will unlock nomadic factions later that bring more novelty to the table.

How do caravansery really work? I had an outlaying jade city, which made a killing trading it to AIs and my only City A in range. I build a caravan in A to send it to my heartland with no jade, but it ended up making 5 gold per city instead of the 40-60 the jade city got. I build another caravan in city B which got jade from city A but it didn't reexport to the rest of my empire/AI city nearby. Do caravans not chain? Whats the point then?
City B imported and resold pilgrims for the expected price, not 5 gold like the jade, so why does one good resell at the normal price and the other at a fraction?
With how obtuse trade it they could at least give you range indicators, since forest and rivers count different to the range limits. Also is it city tile to city tile or adjacent to adjacent?

The Three Kingdoms period was one of the most turbulent periods of Chinese history, and the most beloved thanks to its vivid depiction in the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. The ancient Han Dynasty was coming to an end, and the empire was in chaos. Bandits and rebels were overrunning the countryside, the Emperor was just a child, and control of the court had been seized by a vicious tyrant.

Yet the time of chaos was also a time of opportunity, when men of courage and ambition could rise to power from outside the traditional aristocracy. A common soldier could become a warlord, a sandal maker could become an emperor, and a fugitive would come to be revered as a god.

In this expansion you take the role of a warlord attempting to re-unite the land, and create a new dynasty.

Three Kingdoms features

I've got mixed feelings about this. It's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the genre, but I prefer RTK XI. Or 13? Whichever was the last one on PC in English that was good. It has a lot of features, but I'm not sure they really come together well for a great experience yet. Hopefully when it comes out of early access they'll have polished any rough edges it has.

I'm just not interested because I have no idea how in the hell you'd add Genghis Khan to the game. It kind of makes sense to do a 4X in China if it's about the Warring States period but I've got no idea how you skip ahead a millenium and somehow bring the Mongols into it.

I've never heard of the game. From what I've seen on youtube it looks fairly interesting.

Reading this thread however it seems that opinions are divided. Is it worth it after these couple of years of development and two DLCs?

Hoggypare thanks for the review, sold me on the historicity thing (already had it from a bundle, but the encouragement helps in a world with thousands of games one could play instead).

You're welcome! As a side note, I recently revisited the game and I would say, pick up the three kingdoms DLC - it gives some much needed depth to the character system and works with the grand campaign
