Compared to your daughter becoming a whore I think it was a "good" practice. Granted this was mostly somewhat well off families, not the dirt poor peasants where girls would often suffer rape, death or become unwed teenage mothers. This was one way the family could make sure their daughter stayed "pure" until she was biologically ready, would go off to a vetted and in many cases wealthy family, and they in the process received a substantial dowry. Otherwise the daughter stayed at home (either becoming a burden or another helping hand in the household) or stayed unwed and a social pariah.
