Please convince me to play Chrono Trigger.

For now, PC RPG is dead. The only good RPG I have now is The Quest on my iPhone. Which I grew bored of too.

So I've always wanted to play Chrono Trigger and Tactics Ogre, but I just can't bring up the mood to play either of them. I think I should choose CT because TO is a bit more too complicated for my declining brains.

Ok, so can anyone of you fanbois come and give me the push to play CT?

For one, I don't play any pure JRPG at all. It's not the anime thing putting me off, but the combat which is always involved with MASSIVE DAMAGE NUMBERS and extremely emo characters.

For two, I dislike Toriyama Akira's art style. Just seeing the characters eyes of his classic design is making me lose the boner.

For three, I'm just too damn lazy to play games now.

So yeah, any reason to play it?

i played it on my awesome nintendo ds and it is a fun game.

but what i dont understand is...why do you even want to try it...

if i would dislike action, first person perspective, guns and killing i am not sure why i would ever want to try...fuck it..lets say serious sam.

it just sounds like if youd try it you would see toriyamas artwork, experience (not that much but still) emo characters and are too lazy to find your way into it...so you would come back here and whine about what a shitty stupid emo game chrono trigger is.

so save us and yourself the hassle and dont play it.

You should try it if you're into time travelling/time paradox avoiding storylines. Also, it's (pretty much) turn-based, so that's always a plus.

Chrono Trigger has CHARM. Not in a "OOOH, look at the cute little manga characters!" kind of way, but the gameworld, characters and writing just has a lot of personality, especially considering it's an unvoiced SNES game. The fights are fun as well, particularily the bigass bosses, many of whom take a bit of strategy to figure out how to beat, meaning you may have to retry fights with different party members a few times every now and again.'

Or you could simply play it on an emulator and abuse the load/save function.

And the time traveling mechanism is always fun to mess around with in games like this - a large number of sidequests revolve around screwing with the time stream in various inventive ways, such as leaving your sword in a magic well and then zooming 500 years into the future and picking it up again, now fully charged.

Chrono Trigger is spectacular. Play it, love it.

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
It's one of the best (if not the best) JRPGs out there, so you can play it and happily skip out on playing almost every other title in the genre.

"You've played the best, now skip the rest."

Play it to learn. Don't play it for fun, I doubt you will find any. Play it to learn why people like it. Don't look at the dialogue and the story - they are shit - look at how they are delivered, sometimes that is a lot more important, and I think that is why those games succeeded. The art of storytelling is almost completely lost in the West. For example, I was shocked by the quality of the stories in Lost Odyssey; not that they were good, but they were stories that were intended to be told, not read. This is why JRPG's are JRPG's, and well, it's also why you would ever play them.

You could try playing Secret of Mana instead.

Pros:
-It's an action JRPG so it requires even less brainpower.
-Contains less overall emo-ness.
-Allows up to 3 player coop, good for clearing up post-threesome awkwardness.
-No Toriyama eyes!

Cons:
-Storyfaggery is not as cool. No time travel, more hippie shit.
-Characters are still technically designed by Toriyama.
-Only one ending compared to CT's 10!

^Toriyama is't that bad when he lays off the spiky hair stuff, which I think only Crono is a victim of.

It's also probably one of the shortest jrpgs there are, no grindan.

edit:
-Contains less overall emo-ness.

Wut. CT is one of the least emo jrpgs. The villain is a parasite who just wants to eat stuff, and the main girl literally yells they're not gonna be emo and stand around depressed when they find out he's transformed the future Earth into a post apoc hellhole. Then uplifting music starts to play and they gonna change that shit, yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah

It's pretty good, there are some annoying areas (assuming you don't abuse save states) though. Got about half-way through it before I got bored.

After you finish with Chrono, try some of Spiderweb Software games if you haven't already. If you have already played Avernum and Geneforge, try Nethergate. The original, I believe the remake removed some stuff.

I'm also not a fan of Toriyama's style, but it really is a charming game, as Eyeball says. There are definitely some interesting things going on in it, but mostly - it's just fun to play. It's assuredly worth checking out on the DS.

Don't get the DS version. Only thing that sets it apart from the SNES version is a better (...) translation and new godawful minigames/locations. Square also decided to fuck us over by bridging the gap between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, and Chrono Cross is probably the worst jrpg of all time and a fucking blight on Trigger's good name. To make a shitty thing even stinkier, the storyline changes makes no fucking sense at all.

So just load up a SNES emulator and patch the rom with one of the unofficial translations if you want better/more accurate text.

Toriyama is good at drawing robots and technological stuff, but it's like he creates his characters in a generator with a set amount of hairstyles, faces, and accessories.

Andyman is right. Get SNES version, they botched these versions afterwards (or they are only copies of SNES version). It looked like these modification were done by people who never played properly both games first.

The art style is actually quite useful for low res games, these characters do stand out.

I just patched the Japanese ROM recently with the rigid translation patch, it was easy to do, and Japanese version is more difficult anyway.

Play it, it's about as good as a JRPG can get without breaking into a new genre. There is only the slightest hint of emofaggotness in an optional character who you can kill if you want. The only animeish spiky haired fag is the mute protagonist who you don't have to use. The combat is fast paced and painless. The pacing is fantastic, there's some nice side quests near the end, and the storyline is great.

So is the main character from Secret of Mana. Actually, Crono and Marle look so similar to the boy and girl from SoM that it's possible CT was originally intended to be a sequel.

I know, but it still has a few more emo moments than SoM. Like when it comes to most of the main characters' background stories, especially Magus.

Monsters, too. I remember he once had a girl in one of his mangas disguise herself as her friend, and there was a footnote stating that the girls were taking advantage of the author's inability to draw different faces for young females.

I liked it back then but man Japan is fucking relentless with shonen crap that's all the same 5-6 plot points and characters over and over because it's designed to appeal to successive generations of 10 year olds.

Like American comic books are stupid and try to get more sophisticated in 5-6 year patterns and then they realize they made it too mature and kid it up again (I know only old men read comics now but I guess i mean like '70s-'90s), Japan is too smart for that shit all for new young boys all the time, you are in the formal operation stage now go read something else

Don't play that piece of shit.

The Codex's gone flaccid as of 2008 onwards, CT should be insta-bashed for being utter shit. The reasons I explained a while ago (aka lern2serch).
