Please convince me to play Chrono Trigger.

I also suggest SNES Shadowrun. People seem to like the Genesis version more, but they managed to make it even more vomit-inducing than Ultima 7's camera.

That's a pretty good list.

I'd seriously suggest looking into Bahamut Lagoon and Romancing SaGa 3 to anyone who hasn't played the fan translations already, they're both great examples of directions jRPGs could've gone towards. Each features concepts that weren't present in your typical jRPG back then, and are also inexplicably missing from most jRPGs even today. They're - to jRPGs - in a sense what games like Ultima 7 were to cRPGs, but they're not that well known because they never got an official western release.

But of course, somehow the genre stopped evolving sometime between the end of the SNES era and the early PSX era, and returned to the most basic of basics + increasingly elaborate cutscenes. Sounds familiar?

It's a beautiful game. A great "good for what it is". No, there's no C&C, but it's not annoying, it's fun, and there's an infinity of memorable lines.

Let's see what that site have to say about FF8.

"all characters likable except for the main two (Squall and Rinoa)"

Yeah, fuck that site.

edit: Xenogears: "The game starts out really, REALLY fucking slow, but gets better the more you play it."

These people are insane and have no right going around recommending games to people.

Some good SNES jrpgs:

Bahamut Lagoon
Breath of Fire
Dragon Quest V & VI
Earthbound
FF IV & VI
Live A Live
Lufia I & II
Romancing SaGa 3
Secret of Mana 1 & 2
Shin Megami Tensei I & II
Star Ocean
Tales of Phantasia
Terranigma
Zelda - A Link to the Past

I see disturbing lack of love for Final Fantasy 5. While the storyline is juvenile - which is okay because the game does not come from an era where every product pretended to be grimdark, mature and omg deep the job system it implements is simply amazing - it was later reintroduced in FF Tactics games.

Pity they didn't have it in otherwise superior FFVI.

Now, Bahamut Lagoon looks interesting :)

Also about "Tactics Ogre". What is the Codex's consensus on this? Any good? I would do with a fun tactical game - preferably if it was reasonably difficult.

Funny you say that, considering the Codex is basically /v/ without Anonymous :smug:

Anyway, it's a wiki so you aren't supposed to take everything at face value. Most games suggested on this thread are there, so use it to see what could interest you and then search for more info.

Gomez is too classy for profanity. Clearly, that picture is something a retarded Microsoft Paint monkey drabbled up. You're probably related to him in some way. Now git.

Ok, any notable difference between the two games that make "Tactics Ogre" (not)suck in comparison.
  • no FF faggotry (chocobos, emo characters etc.)
  • more difficult (no Cid for example, you cannot use abilities from another job AFAIR)
  • less broken than FFT (still broken as fuck)
  • non-linear (lawful/chaotic path)
  • no emo bullshit a.k.a. "epic story"
  • better characters
  • Cloud Strife - free
Still, FFT is simply Tactics Ogre with random FF stuff thrown in, so the difference isn't big. Both games have terribly broken gameplay for example.

@Andy:

What's with your love for Final Fantasy series, horsie?
Old Squaresoft surely created some damn good titles. Like Front Mission series, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Mana, Parasite Eve series, Vagrant Story...
But Final Fantasy? TBH probably only the 5th part is ANY good (as Mrowak mentioned). Enjoyed it when the translation showed up.
It's Might and Magic of jRPGs FFS!

No love for it at all, actually. Final Fantasy is a retarded series and definitely among the worst things to ever come out of Japan. The games get shittier and shittier with every installment and live on purely because of fanboyism who stupidly believe in "the legacy of the great Final Fantasy series".

You gotta promise you'll keep it a secret, though. I need to keep up the illusion for my FF8 lp!

Why Final Fantasy Tactics get so much praise around these parts, though, I'll never understand. It's really one of the worst strategy rpgs out there. Play Tactics Ogre, Mrowak, for all the reasons Spekkio listed and plenty more.
