Oh, the fights aren't random, either, so you can avoid like half the encounters if you avoid enemy patrols and the like..

I thought at least some people would praise the game for having great C&C? You know, it's the core element the Dex is crazy for and I've heard there are tons of C&C in the game.

There's no C&C as the codex likes (choose A path and B path will be closed foreaver). You can choose to do sidequests that can alter stuff (like fixing a desert in the past so it'll become a lush forest in the present), for example.

Honestly I'd say to not play CT cuz there are better jRPGs that, assuming you have limited time and/or patience for them, would be a better use of your time.

CT is better than the early Final Fantasies and all the Dragon Warrior/Quest games tho...

I recall CT being p. good when I first played it all those years ago, but after trying it again a few months ago, it felt pretty... flaccid. Same goes for FF6 too actually, though at least the latter had a somewhat more interesting plot and characters.

Honestly, I have no idea how or why Codexers enjoyed jRPGs like this or FF3. Combat is oversimplified, grindy garbage. Art style makes me want to puke. Characters are all one-dimensional cliches. I just don't get the appeal of these games.
I found FF7 and FF8 amusing because of the lulzy campiness of the stories. Tactics Ogre and FF Tactics had fun and deeper combat systems. But, what's the appeal of these older jRPGs? - I just don't get it...

You don't need to grind in CT or FF3 (it's actually bad to grind in FF3 early on as characters don't have Espers, and later on it just isn't needed anymore), and the combat isn't that much simpler than BG's buff + web + rape, for example.

Art style is a matter of preference, and even then the characters are usually in SD form so your cat or whatever won't mock you for playing an animu game.

Characters in your average crpg aren't much deeper, either.

its pretty okay, some surprising C&C for a japanese game. neat sidequests involving time travel paradox shit.

Not really a whole lot of sidequests or C&C, but it is interesting and somewhat nice to see them at all. Like most jrpgs, gameplay is ultra-refined which has its pros and cons

Out of those, Live A Live with translation patch, Earthbound and BoF are the only ones that are enjoyable. I would also like to add Secret of Evemore, which is a far better game than the cutesy homosexuality that is the Secret of Mana series, and Shadowrun, which generally shines in being NOT all about gay elves, faggot dwarves and poorly drawn manga characters, although the Sega Genesis version is far better. Breath of Fire 2 should also be on your list due to the large number of sidequests and the fact that the final boss fight is essentially about killing Jesus.

Zelda is not a JRPG - it's an action-adventure.

So, in other words, you agree that the combat in these games are simplistic and that the stories in most of the earlier jRPGs aren't detailed enough to carry the game. So, umm..., where exactly is the appeal of these games?

Even if grindiness isn't a factor, I still don't see enough depth in these games to make them worthwhile.

But, but...
Aren't PC games superior you kno'... just because, CK?
Because PC gaming is serious business for the elite individuals and console gaming is immature animu bullshit with big eyes?

They're games, I don't know why people insist they must be "worthwhile". As long as you can pass some time with your dick in one hand and keyboard in other, they're "worthwhile" to me, since you'll never have a highbrow experience with the vidya anyway.

maybe you should quit playing games, if you feel the need to grade games by "worthwhile" standards, ya know?

maybe that is the problem today with all the 8 hour games, they make games for people with families and kids, people that dont have time to play long games.

This. You are being angsty about your choice to play or not play a 15 year old JRPG...which I suppose is appropriate preparation, given the genre, but still. It's just a fucking video game.

Want to know more about this one. I tried it once, but stopped for some reason. All I remember is that you DON'T get the girl at the end.

Also, I second Live A Live and Romancing SaGa 3.

I might as well throw in another vote for Terranigma. P. cool gameplay, nice music, ok story (if not sad at the end).

I don't remember what happens at the end :(. But it doesn't matter.

The combat is turn-based in *and* grid-based and it's pretty good.

Such as?

And I ask this because the only jRPGs I played were CT, FF4 and FF6. The only ones I played more than 30 minutes, that is. CT was pretty nice, AFAIK. Not sure if I would like it that much if I play it again though

Well, someone beat me to it already, but I'll link you to a post I made recently recommending jRPGs and their variants.

http://rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php ... 20#1313420

might be worthwhile to read that thread too, if you haven't already
