Censorship is always arbitrary. You can never create an objective standard as to what should be censored, because each guideline will be applied according to a given censor interpretation.

For New Game+ besides getting a headstart based on achievements, it only introduces an optional challenge dungeon with no new story content.
So nothing extra except to see all endings and for ero events completion using a walkthrough.

Of course, Rance is a women hoarder and doesn't like sharing.

First screen is the brothel's 'Talents' with 'Looks', 'Technique' & 'Mental' stats in sequence.
Would have given SBR (Silbarrel) a 'Z' rating in Looks if I could; so I gave her a 'Psycho' trait as a consolation. Max of 3 traits.
The 'Unicorn' icon is for 'no prior experience'.


Yup, second screen are the customers.
Max of 6 characters is accepted for their names, so had to use their Japanese names.

Their stat rating is 'Income Level'.
If soliciting is successful, the blue line is what kind of present (trait) will the talent received/be replaced.
The pink lines are what kind of targets (traits) the customers prefer.


Which competing brothels the customers will enter depends on the touted talent's looks.
If the talent's traits matches the customer's preference, a +2 'Looks' modifier will be added. So Rance's brothel will probably have very few customers.

Amount of income receives depends on the Customer's Income Level & Talent's Technique.
When matching is successful, talent's:
- Looks will drop slightly
- Tech will increase
- Mental will drop (each stat change is modified by her existing traits).


Income is used for buying brothel facilities upgrades, preventive pills, items for talent stats' increase, characters' battle equipment upgrades, battle items etc.

Finished 4.1, but given that 4.2 picks up right where the former left off, I fancied a break so I went back and blasted through the Ran route in Sengoku for a change of pace before I continue on with Rance 4.2.

Ended up getting the ending where Ran goes off with Souun, which felt a lot more fitting than the version where she remains with Rance at the end. It was an okay route, I noticed a lot of hate/disappointment directed at the Ran route online, but it largely played out about as I expected, with Rance basically taking advantage of the situation and Ran keeping him at a distance as much as possible. Certainly not up to the caliber of the Kenshin/True routes, but it was fun for a quick playthrough, Ran's cute and it was good to have a what if scenario given her canonical fate.

Shizuka also popped up this time around when she never has before, so that was a nice surprise. Heck, reading through some of the events for returning characters in Sengoku with my now-bolstered backstory knowledge really just helps push Sengoku to even greater heights; it's great to actually know what past events the returning cast are referring to.

Back to 4.2 then.

Part 3 (After Mode) Would have gone a little like this...

Parts 1 & 2 have a difference in timeframe, and even in individual character strength. Plus the nature of the game means you have to play it from the start each time.

That's where Part 3 comes in, a special mode where you can use the characters you've collected over these playthroughs to create the ultimate army.
Effectively, it would function as a super challenge mode where you use your cumulative game experience to win.

Part 1 & 2
Play from the start each time, collect more character cards, strengthen your existing cards. When you clear the game, any card progress gets saved to your broader collection. Plus events within Part 3 might change depending on which characters you have available

Part 3
Fight using the overall card collection you gathered over multiple playthroughs (from Part 1 & 2 both)
Ranking up is irrelevant here.

We planned to run multiple campaign events that would be delivered via patches. It's not really something for casual players, it's more a special bonus for players who want to go the extra mile.

But the development of part 3 was starting to take too much in terms of time and resources. That was fine, I thought. We were planning on dropping this content in post-release waves anyway. Like when we patched VI, Sengoku, and Quest. Even after I retire, I can still keep churning out these updates! Hell, maybe we'll even push for a Rance X Magnum... That's what I was thinking at the time, at least.

But reality is often disappointing, and by the time development of the base game was over I was basically completely conked out on Rance. We barely managed to implement the bare bones of what we'd initially planned. (1/5)

The After Mode You Got
In the final release of the game, After Mode has a few basic experimental quests. It's not super well balanced, especially when you consider part 2 cards coming into play. It needs various tweaks here and there. I did manage to get La Vaswald into the game as a post-release patch but... That was it.

My plans for the special post-release events
Archfiend Campaign

In this event you'd fight the Archfiends in their prime, it'd be different to the Blood Memory fight at the end of Part 2.

Quest Name: RAX - Future

Requirements: Beat Part 2, have Serachrolas in your collection.

The scene would open on a conversation between characters from Part 1 and Part 2, maybe even Alice would be involved. Don't think too hard about it, timelines got smooshed together and stuff like that. The cast discover they can freely travel throug time, so Rance is all like "Okay let's go to the future."

Boss Battle: The Plothole Wall
You have to break through it to proceed. Like the battle against Galtia's feast, you should use stupid characters to proceed here. Athena 2.0, Babora, Julia, Kibako, etc. Stupid characters don't care about plot holes.

Event: Squid Future
Go to the future Squidman timeline, a little conversation would play. You get an achievement called "Squnty," and that unlocks Squnty Kalar as a card in normal play. (2/5)

Quest: RAX - GI

Requirements: Resurrected Sieg, have Kentaro, Hornet, Satella, or other characters related to Gai in your collection.

Event: Archfiend Gai
Rance gets pissed off at how much Hornet loves her dad, so he decides to use his newfound time powers to go back in time and kick Gai's ass.

Boss: The Plothole Wall

Event: Gai, Pre-Battle
It's the Gai era, younger Kentaro is trying to save Miki. Rance & co decide to go save her first, because why not.

Midboss: Fiend Kayblis
Kayblis would be a midboss each time you go back further in time, and he'd be easier to beat each successive time due to you fighting a less evolved version of him the further back you go.

Boss: Archfiend Gai
After beating him, the party wakes up in their normal time period in a stupor.

You'd get an achievement called "Gai," unlocking Gai as a card in normal play.

Quest: RAX - JL
Fight Archfiend Jill.
From here on you'd go further back, beating each Archfiend that came before the last. The specifics hadn't been written out here.

This would end up being about ten maps/events, I think.
The story would focus on Dark Rance, heading to the Devil Realm to fight his people. I also wanted to use this opportunity to showcase Rathaum, who has basically never appeared before.

vs. Neplacus, Geppei(?), and Xacalite
vs. The Three Devil Princes
vs. Rathaum

I'd have just gone along with whatever Orion's ideas were for the Devil Realm. (3/5)

Divine Campaign
The last battle against the Gods, and the Creator.
Requirement: Have all the Golden Statues.

Rudrathaum's already been quelled by Crook, and the Gods don't interfere anymore, so everything's fine... But Am says the world can never truly be safe until you kill the whale, so you go down there anyway.

Bosses:
vs. Chora
vs. Goddess Alice
vs. Quelplan
vs. The Eternal Eight (Maybe not this)
vs. Harmonitt, Roven-Pan, and Planner

I wasn't entirely sure where to go with this, but I had a feeling Orion woul be able to make it work.

Final Boss: Rudrathaum
I wanted to make this one basically impossible to beat, even with literally every character in the game maxed out.
But even then, there could still be players who'd find a way... Even if the battle took a few real-life days... Guh!
Other Stuff
Crook's Trial
I didn't want part 2 to be too ambiguous so I had this written up to explain several key details about the end of the game... But in the end I decide it wasn't necessary.

The players ended up understanding the game just fine, and different individuals interpreted the ending in different ways. I know some developers like to have an ironclad truth to the elements of their work, but I think with this game I'm quite happy leaving things open to individual interpretation instead of forcing my own personal explanation on the fans.

Seasonal Events
I wanted to have seasonal character campaigns like they do in gacha games. I'd have rolled those out in updates.

Characters That Never Showed Up
I also wanted to roll out patches that slowly introduced more characters to the game, with the end goal being to have literally every Rance character that ever existed playable in some form. (4/5)

But I couldn't do it.
Sure there were physical and mental reasons why, but there was another reason too.

I stopped enjoying the kind of game I was trying to make. Probably after Rance Quest came out, come to think of it.

I got bored when I replayed Rance Quest. I don't really want to keep doing the same stuff over and over again. Maybe it's just my age, but it started to feel like a real waste of time. I have a limited amount of time left, so I'd rather spend it on games that give me a burst of meaningful content without focusing itself on stretching out replayable stuff. That's why I decided we should make Evenicle.
...At any rate... Rance X is the finale to the series. The last Rance game. I wanted users to enjoy it to their fullest. I wanted to make a game that could be played for years and years on end, and in the end I got way too greedy. I overreached. I don't think the ideas were necessarily bad, I think a lot of players probably would've liked them. But at the same time... I wasn't up to it. I think I did the most I could for replayability with Rance Quest.
Plus, I started looking everywhere around me and... I saw gacha games. 100+ battles, over and over. Long drawn out sequences that don't really feel very meaningful to me. I was starting to get sick of it. I was starting to get tired of the very design philosophy.

It got so bad that I wanted to scrap the project at one point, completely change the direction we were going in... But I persevered. I'm hoping this feeling might be temporary, that someday my interest in getting high scores or maxing out my stats in a game might come back.

After I retired, I started playing Rance Quest again because I wanted to reclaim that feeling. I actually really enjoyed playing it through, but when it came to the end I just stopped. I had absolutely no motivation to play through World 2 or 3. (5/5)

That's why in the end, my plans for this After Mode fell by the wayside. I don't want to create something I wouldn't want to enjoy or play myself.

It's not that I regret Rance X. I'm happy with how it came out. But right now it's not especially challenging to 100% the game. That said, I think the story, combat, and character content balances out really nicely.

Rather than seeing people playing Rance X until they get sick and tired of it, I think I'll be happy if people picked it up again in 5 or 10 years, just if the mood strikes.

...Anyway, it's been three years since it came out, so that's my little ramble about the game. Happy Anniversary, to all of Rance's fans! (6/5)

Ok, finished both Rance 4.1 & 4.2. My thoughts:

Operation Pervert Bird - Damn, this game is definitely one of Rance's more "classic" Rance outings, he has a couple of dickish moments in 5D too, granted, but the edge definitely wore off and he softened a bit in Rance 6 compared to this outing. Likewise, Rance's hastily constructed sign in 4.2 after tying up Blazer is pretty much up there with "the diviner girl fell".

Genri's first appearance - he has some funny scenes and lines throughout both 4.X games. Rance's envy and annoyance toward him following the receptionist incident make for some good moments and he has quite a lot of dialogue across the adventure. Fills in a blank for another Sengoku returning character at the very least.

Kisara -
maybe I missed/skipped something accidently, but Kisara didn't really get an ending after defeating Archibald, game pretty much just said Genri was taking him off somewhere after shaving his head. Next thing I know, Rance & Athena are back home greeting Sill. The game's a bit odd with its handling of Kisara after Op. P.Bird, Kisara doesn't really comment on Rance's antics beyond a few ellipses of disapproval I guess. She had a bit of backstory as to why she was doing what she was, but this wasn't really followed up on after the early scene with Pluepet.

Pink Mask - she has sporadic appearances throughout the games, but I liked how she was helping Rance behind the scenes across both games.

Athena - Athena 2.0 was a much greater focus in this game and she's funny but I don't think they quite nailed her particular blend of charm/dopeyness till 5D, which I think pulled it off a better when she has the trio dynamic going on with Rance & Sill. There was a random cg of Tama / Frostvine from Rance 4, they're implied to be following Athena 2.0 and gathering data for a potential 3.0, I guess. It's amusing that Athena instantly knows who Pink Mask is yet Rance never figured it out, although I guess he came pretty close.

I will say that having now finished 4.1/4.2, Athena's absence in both 6 & 7 is much more noticeable, she's very prominent in 4.1, 4.2 & 5.D, and she puts a humourous spin on Rance's sex scenes with her and Sill when Athena's up for anything and Sill is just frequently mortified at the events unfolding, lol.

Annoyances - So, you only directly control Rance in this game, the other party members will be controlled by the AI. Across both titles, it is usually enough to knock all enemies to the unconscious state to win a battle, further attacks directed at an unconscious adversary will kill them outright by depleting their life points directly. Now, quite a few plot-important enemy women in both games can be killed in battles, which results in an immediate gameover as Rance wants to H them post-battle. The real problem is your AI companions like to target said women who have already been incapacitated, and subsequently deliver a killing blow. It's a really odd design choice, out of your control and I can't say it adds anything but annoyance to battles, really. For my playthrough, Genri was absolutely fixated on delivering a killing blow to Sailor, necessitating many reloads. Brought me right back to my time with Persona 3 with Mitsuru spamming Marin Karin at inopportune times.

Battles also start to ramp up quite a bit in frequency at the end of 4.2, especially contrasted with 4.1, so Wenlina's ability to randomly fully heal the party while in the dungeon is pretty handy.

By and large, I think combat in 4.1 was so scarce so as to be rendered inconsequential, especially if you power-up the Iceberg Sword at the very start of the game, combat is reduced to being trivial.

There are a couple of mini boss characters (assassins) in 4.2 who put XCOM's finest to shame with their ability to dodge attacks. These guys were a real pain to fight against; Rance has no magic abilities, the enemy has an extremely high dodge rate and its up to the AI whether it feels like using Kisara's electric card abilities that seem to hit all the time. While this is going on, the enemy will be ripping through your HP and Life Points too. Athena 2.0 somehow managed to one-shot the 2nd one of these guys (no clue how) and killed him.

Other annoyances: There's only a "skip text until next choice" option available on the menu. This can be handy for skipping through battles, but it also will skip through post-battle dialogue. So late in 4.2, there's a battle involving Pink Mask, and as I skipped through the last round of combat text, the game also completely skipped the following scene (and it was one you'd want to watch), had to load a prior save and redo the fight. This can be annoying as the battles are... well, kinda clunky, as you wait for sprites to slide about the screen and have to click constantly to advance battle text and progress the fight. Essentially, if there is *any* chance that your team collectively will kill/incapacitate all enemies in the current round, do not use the skip option or you'll skip any follow up scenes.

I ended up playing both Rance 4.1 & 4.2 through the VirtualBox VM application. Been a long time since I needed to mess with VMs for anything but it was easy to set up although having to frequently capture/release the mouse from the VM to refer to the walkthrough and such, plus the general slight sense of "clunkiness" to the whole setup definitely made a somewhat clunky game feel even worse. Seriously, I found Rance III easier to deal with, but that's most likely just due to the game being within a VM setup not being to my liking and contributing to the clunky feel, rather than the game itself. I'd definitely say that experiencing the games through the VM hindered my experience with them a little.

There's something about these two games that feels a bit proto-5Dish to me as well, maybe that the combat was quite weak (and barely there in 4.1) it almost made me wonder if there'd been some effort towards making a combat-less Rance title somewhere along the way... You could probably have omitted combat from 4.1 entirely without issue tbh.

So with those two entries finished, I'm finished with my Rance backstory adventure (aside from Kichikuou, which will now have to wait until after Quest). If the wait for IX/X turns out to be ridiculous, MAYBE I'll give the original Rance I/II a go, just to see the differences, but I'm in no rush to play those versions.

Rance actually died in this game. Thought I'd stumbled into a bad ending or something for a minute.

Just finished Rance02 Kai. Compared to the old 02 translation Bird comes up as much more of a Supreme Gentleman "nice guy". I heard he has a blog where he talks trash about his betters.

About Kisara, she has a hard time.
Fails to pay her debts and she and her sister end up as brainwashed slaves for the merchant until they are freed by Rance
And she doesn't even wear glasses.

Today on the blog, we have a special programmer’s corner for Rance Quest Magnum from Toufu Guy!

Hi!! It’s toufu guy – I’ve been working on Rance Quest Magnum as its programmer for the last year-ish, and am so proud that Rance Quest Magnum is finally reaching the Western world.

There’s a lot of stuff going on in this game, and I just wanted to make sure I’m giving some big tips so you can enjoy this game to its fullest. Some things are new, and others are can be a little buried.

Some of us just aren’t very good at video games
In the nearly 10 years since Rance Quest Magnum initially came out, the Rance Series Director, TADA, has spent plenty of time agonizing over the game and what could be even better about it.

He has even released several patches, on his own time, that gently tweak mechanics, or adds in new characters. In the most recent patch, 3.860, which the MangaGamer version incorporates, TADA completely re-did the easy mode from the game into a simpler format.

Since the game’s original easy mode came with some heavy nerfs (such as permanently locking you out of post-game content if you enabled it even once), I would never recommend using it.

However, TADA’s re-implementation simplifies it into a “2x mode” that gives 2x exp and 2x gold with zero downsides. In my opinion, it drastically improves the playability of Rance Quest Magnum as the experience lets you keep more characters at viable levels with less grinding, and you can afford more gear to try different combinations of gear. The team decided to dub the 2x mode as “TADA Mode” out of respect to TADA, and you can enable it from quest 13 – “Alice’s Mansion.” (TADA Mode is disabled by default, so you will have to visit Alice’s Mansion after the first quest to enable it.)

New And Improved “Quest” Ending

Rance Quest Magnum features a lot of character develop-wait, not like that!
As many of you may be aware, Rance Quest Magnum is actually a two-part feature! The original Rance Quest released on August 26th, 2011, with the Magnum expansion releasing on March 24th, 2012.

The Magnum expansion expanded on both the story and mechanics of the game. The additional story in the Magnum expansion is its own story arc with a finale overshadowing the original Quest ending. However, it puts the Quest ending in an awkward position since they actually have some mutually exclusive content. In the Magnum expansion, Alice told the player to just remember that parts of the ending happened, and other parts didn’t.

Here, TADA comes in to save the day again. In TADA’s 3.860 patch, he comes in with surgical precision to create a branching path so you can choose whether to experience the original Quest ending or to segue into the Magnum campaign. This does mean you will have to beat the final quest of the Quest campaign TWICE to be able to reach all of the content in the game.

Well, well, well, if it isn’t the famous adventurer, Ranceko!
Rance Quest Magnum
has no fewer than 68 characters available throughout the game (with potentially a few more available for those willing to challenge World 2 and World 3).

With that many options available, AliceSoft built a robust character system that lends itself well to custom characters. By buying a “Character Ticket” from Frostbuy, and then heading to quest 129 – “Alice’s Guest” – you can create your own character.

In my example, I created a returning character from Sengoku Rance! All you need to do is have a 196 x 232 png file of the character’s face, drag it into the “Face CG” sub-folder of your SaveData folder (\AliceSoft\Rance Quest\Save Data), and you’re ready to go!

There are a multitude of classes and skills available to you when you first create your character, so feel free to have some fun with it!

Advanced: Custom characters start out rather generic, and can pale in comparison to the likes of Rance, Kenshin Uesugi, Shizuka Masou, and Bernard Ceramité.

There is the additional quest 106 – “Dark Alice’s Pay2Win Room” – where you can teach your custom character more advanced skills to be competitive with even the strongest of the main characters in Rance Quest Magnum. Be wary though, when Dark Alice says “Pay2Win,” she is going to ask you for some serious amounts of gold!

One of the coolest components of Rance Quest Magnum to work on was actually implementing the “Data Collection” feature. All across the world, people will play the game in different ways, and some completionists are going to push themselves to reach the very ends of what the game has to offer.

The data collection collects statistics from everybody who consents to it, and from there you can see the spread of how strong all of the different Rances are and how many days have been spent playing through everything Rance Quest Magnum has to offer. If you want to participate, you can always go to Config -> Other 2 -> Connect to network to enable data sharing.

How good is Rance quest?
If Sengoku Rance, Rance X, Kichikou Rance and Rance VI are 10's, and Rance IX is an 8, and 5D is a 6, then Rance Quest is also a 6.
The story, particularly plot development, is pretty good, the new characters are very good, and the rest of the game is really flawed.
Three of the ten best female characters in the whole series (IMO) debut in Rance Quest.
