Since we’re in the trash thread, I’m not ashamed to post this crap again.

No matter how disgusting it might be (the translation, that is – in my opinion, the game is less crappy than it seems), little by little it’s moving forward. Once I get past the phase of the menus, inventory, spell and item names, it should go much more smoothly (when I have time to work on it).

For this, you’ll probably have to wait a year.

And then you’ll play with a translation that will suck too, to stay on theme.

Can't you use an AI to translate and then correct it manually?
Wouldn't that be easier/faster?

I've read corrected AI translations are doing an alright job nowadays.

I used a website which sucked for a translation last year and had to manually correct half of it but still, it was faster and easier than fully manual.
Having to find the perfect turn of phrase is tiring so 50% less is something.

That’s exactly what I’m doing, actually. The problem, sometimes, is the lack of context and especially the lack of space.

Since I’m working on a hexadecimal .dat file, I can’t change the structure of the file in any way. If an item has a description of 16 characters, I can’t use 15 or 17. And the object/dialogue/spell descriptor must remain the same, so I can’t take large chunks of text and translate them all at once. I have to go item by item. Otherwise, the game won’t start because it loses the references to the objects in the file.

Fortunately, the translation from German and Hungarian to English is often shorter, so I just have to add some "hexadecimal spaces" (as in the first screenshot - there are at least thirty white spaces at the end but you can't see them) and everything works perfectly. The problem mainly arises with spell/item names that are a single word, and sometimes the German/Hungarian term is shorter than the English one. That’s when it becomes a pain, and sometimes I’ve had to find pretty annoying compromise solutions (as you can see with "Pray" in the second screenshot. It should have been "Prayer").

Moreover, some "typical" RPG-related terms in German/Hungarian might have English equivalents that don’t match perfectly.

It's Hold monster. And it should also be subject of monster resistance check.
Yeah, this and you need to keep track of words / sentences you used for consistency.
It's painful.
It's only painful if you need to interrupt it with work. Otherwise it's 3 months somewhat simple work. (Because nowadays there are AI tools that helps with translation and grammar. German words are typically longer than English, thus there is space for hex editing. Wait you are translating it from Hungarian, have fun.) And if you are retired pensioner your eyesight and work productivity sucks. So basically, it's best when translation are done by university teachers who have plenty of free time and somewhat relaxing jobs, office ladies who have plenty of spare time, or random teenagers who are shitting on school because they want to finish a translation of a game because the game is awesome.

Typically teenagers get D, or repeat class, or they are removed from school. Pensioners stop in the middle because of health issues, or being forced into job to survive. And healthy workers they are finding they are kinda overworking themselves... So basically translations, or game remakes, tend to peter out.

And there is stuff that normal people are refusing to translate. Like Daiakuji, which is game about Japan shortly after end of WWII where Yakuza had to take control to keep Japan a functional state. The main character is teaching woman how to be sex slaves and... You know Yakuza. (I think main goal is to replace pro-US corrupted anti-Japanese government by Sex slave selling Yakuza and have at least some functional state.)

Or Daiteikoku. Which is BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG game/Visual novel parody of Japanese WWII conquest, just situated in era of space empires Japan, China, UK empire. And there was effort about 10 years ago, and then one of official English translator came and said: my company is kinda planning to translate this, it would be wasted effort. Thus translators stopped to not kill profits of commercial company, it would be released soon why would they do this project. 10 years later, and we still didn't see official English translated version. Voluntary unpaid translators were CHEATED. (And I had to watch it legally on youtube where someone played with partial, or machine, translation. I wanted to archive this gem for future, there is even female Donitz who can escape to Japan before is too late. Also Mussolini si big breasted woman, who is pursuing ideology of fancisum. Her fans, population of Italian empire planets are looking like real pigs, are loving her.)

It's flawed gem and I still didn't get it for free to read crazy stuff during nasty weather or when my imunodeficiency keeps me at home.

Ah, reminds of that one time I tried translating this chinese game with AI. I ran it through a bunch of text, did a format check, everything was good but then it would just freeze at certain points and I couldn't figure out why...

It worked a lot better for fallout. Thank you @Tim Cain

Yes, that and also 'Hold Person' need to be changed. I preferred to move forward with the translation and then maybe play it to see how many and which things are inconsistent, incorrect, or need improvement.

As for resistances, there's no mention of them in the description:

"A varázslat hatására a célpont szörny mozgásképtelen lesz, míg le nem jár a hatóideje, vagy mag nem támadják."

Ah, reminds of that one time I tried translating this chinese game with AI. I ran it through a bunch of text, did a format check, everything was good but then it would just freeze at certain points and I couldn't figure out why...

Sometimes I try playing it to see if anything happens, and it doesn’t cause any issues...

But you have so much to live for don't you? You're not living under a tree facing rat hordes and stench coughing up blood, right? still, if you want to sign out... FREE CHOICE. Tell the reaper "Hi!" For me and tell him he still owes me a few coins as currency exchange in the underworld sucks.
