Seems more than mildly dishonest to use his name that way then. I don't give two fucks about the film industry or Mr Ebert though so idk why you would expect me to know he was dead.

The amounts of posts dedicated to discussing PoE probably outnumbers the discussion of all of those games combined. For the Codex at least, it's obviously the most significant cRPG release in years.

No, it's the most controversial cRPG release in the last years, and that is a huge difference. The reason is simple: on the one hand, we have players that are frustrated (or felt betrayed) by Obsidian. The kickstarter was successful, but the game was a complete waste of money and opportunities. PoE has a simplistic combat system, copious and superficial writing, etc. I’m not going to even discuss the amount of experimental shit that Sawyer did in the game, his dismissive remarks about grognards, etc. On the other hand, we have players that can’t conciliate the fact that the game sucks with their blind adoration for some developers at Obsidian. They will deny all the problems of PoE in the most shameless manner. Thus, the Codex is split between impartial players that are calling Obsidian on their shit and fanboys that can’t acknowledge their failure.

You say that as if something can't be both controversial and significant. It was already the most discussed RPG on the Codex before it was even released. Which is rather odd, you'd think the Codex's tastes would slant towards something more Fallout-ish rather than something like PoE.

I don't think you understand the definition of 'complete waste'. The NWN2 engine was practically made out of cardboard and it gave us Mask of the Betrayer less than a year after NWN2's release. The PoE engine is actually surprisingly solid and polished and should be a good foundation for future RPG's - it already is, with T:ToN.

The mechanics are complex but the execution is simple. BG1 also has fairly simple combat but there are instances where you need to do something a bit different - react to Mages, spells and status effects. You can pretty much just ignore everything in Pillars of Eternity.

I believe that's somewhat intentional because Something Awful and badgame at large do not want to care about that stuff. They do want the illusion of choice at character creation and in dialogue though - which is what they got.

PoE's combat isn't simple at all. It might suck, but it's quite complex.

At first glance you might consider it to be of moderate complexity, but when you play the game you realize that most of it is of little importance. Even Decado states that itemization and stats feel basically irrelevant.

This happen when you already live more than 20 years and play almost all rpg in market, everything got repetitive and nothing is new.

Is time to leave the games for the kids my friend.

Yes the act of combat is often simple in the game, but the system of combat is complex.

Oblivion is an amazing RPG if it's the first game you play. It has like skills and weapons and you fight monsters. How awesome is that?
