Toee has javelins, shortspears and longspears. Really, that game has pretty much any weapon you need.
Strangely enough, you can attack adjacent(within 5 feet of you) foes, but Temple+ fixes this, as per SRD rules.
Morrowind has spears and they have reach. Only good as thrust weapons, they do low chop and slash damage.
Spears are not that popular compared to swords and axes in RPG's.

I didn't know they fixed it, I had been waiting for that for quite a long time (Co8 said that it couldn't be fixed because it was hardcoded, or something).

A couple people mentioned Mount & Blade already, but haven't said yet why spears are so awesome in those games. I haven't played Bannerlord yet (And it's on sale right now. Maybe I should get it, even though I know my productivity will suffer) but I can speak to how awesome spears are in Warband.

On foot, you can stop cavalry charges with your spear. Spears are in my opinion the easiest weapon to use on horseback. You just ride around and poke people for a huge damage bonus from your speed. And if you have an actual lance, you'll couch the lance automatically on a cooldown if your speed is high enough, and then you'll destroy pretty much everything in the game with one hit. Give yourself a tournament lance, and then all of the dozens of people you knock out in combat become your prisoners, and you'll make tons of money selling them to the ransom broker.

In TB games, Battle Brothers probably is the one that better makes use of it.

Regular spears have "crowd control" skills(spearwall won't let enemies get close, unless they evade it ofc) and polearms have a 2 tiles range and are suitable for back row characters.

You also have throwing spears/javelins which do a ton of damage.

They're also realistic in the sense that it's a great weapon for beginners/early game since it gives the character a +20% bonus to accuracy. IRL spears were the AK47 of medieval warfare due to being more accessible/easier to train(and cheaper to produce) compared to other weapons.

Strange. I always felt two handlers were easier to use.
I never really got the hang of two-handed weapons from horseback. I get that there's a timing to the swing: rock the mouse to the right while holding the button, then release as you ride past. The hits never seemed to connect for me though. Maybe the weapon was too short and I just needed to use a different weapon? Or maybe I just didn't use two-handers from horseback much because I liked having a shield. Whatever the reason, I liked spears because you didn't have to swing the mouse or time your attack very carefully. You just hold the button to pull the spear back, point directly at your enemy, and release the button to stab.

What's your secret for attacking with a two-hander from horseback?

And I just went and bought Bannerlord, by the way. I'm going to call it market research and I'll tell myself (and the IRS) this is part of my job.

If you dont have much requirement for animation

Then Icewind Dale 2 also has a good selection of spears and spear-related feats. They has longer range so a frontline spearman can poke target on the otherside of his meatshield. Halberd is slightly better than spears, but the placement of spears mean it has certain use before you get best halberd. I know that my VH-then-HoF party has a frontline meatwarrior using spears.

Wizardry (7 at least) has two-handed spears and some variants like Naginata. You can use them from the back rank and they're pretty good. In real life close combat they beat swords, clubs, pistols, probably anything but modern long guns and SMGs.

What I've never seen in RPGs are lever-assisted (atl-atl) throwing spears. They have much greater power and range, and they're easy to craft and throw. I speak from experience. There are guys who hunt dangerous big game with them. Bows are more powerful however.

Hand-thrown spears aren't that effective. The light Roman pilum was useful against massed enemies, but in a typical RPG small skirmish, a heavy spear has a short throwing range and the enemy can easily dodge it, then you've given him a weapon. You would only use it against beasts, if you have a backup weapon.

You need to have a talk with the creators of Brytenwalda. It's a mod for Mount & Blade that puts you in early Britain, with Romans, Celts, and Vikings. Those Vikings are iron-age snipers with their spears. You set foot anywhere within 100 paces of a Viking, and that bastard will put a steel-tipped 6-foot ash rod straight into your eye. You and your hundred armored knights will charge his raiding party, and each and every one of you will end up with a spear through your skull before you can lower your lances.

Only possible with lever-assisted spear throwing. I don't know if the Vikings used them, but it's possible, it's a prehistoric worldwide technology.

Underrail has spears. You can destoy rocks with them by throwing the spear while riding a jetski.

In Bannerlord the range of two handlers was reduced. But you too need to time your thrust with a spear and it's more difficult than timing two handlers.

ToEE does reach weapons (such as polearms) really well.

You can trip, disarm or sneak attack foes from back row.
my thug in kangmaker was using a lot of dazzling display. Ive picked long spear so I can get attacks of opportunity easier while doing so

not a cRPG series but Fire Emblem has the rock-paper-scissor weapon triangle of Swords > Axes > Lances > Swords

Examina. Spears are ruthless against flesh. One with a relatively long blade can be good for long arcs to catch exposed extremities and a thrust is devastating to anyone without some form of plate. The reach makes sure they can do it from afar. I pucker up in 2v1 or 3v1 matche when one of the opponents has one.
