Nicosia, Cyprus (August 16, 2024) — Renowned RPG developer and publisher Owlcat Games, alongside developer Emotion Spark Studio, have revealed the first trailer for Rue Valley, a new isometric narrative RPG about a man trapped in a time loop who is dealing with mental challenges. Rue Valley will be one of the first games published by Owlcat Games, following the announcement of its new publishing arm earlier this week.

As the players navigate the world and deal with the tough emotions of the main character, they'll need to understand the true nature of what's happening in Rue Valley. Each character players encounter has their own complex emotional story, including the main character who must rise from the depths of his own struggles to uncover the secrets behind the anomaly causing the time loop.

More info about Rue Valley will be shared during gamescom 2024.

Key features of Rue Valley:
  • Craft Your Personality: Be a cold-hearted loner in one loop and a melodramatic loudmouth in the next. Rue Valley’s time loop resets everything, giving players the chance to experiment with their personalities, actions, and answers.
  • Store Your Memories: Important memories can be stored in a graph, unlocking unique interactions around the Rue Valley Motel and new mindsets to help build out the main character.
  • Uncover the Secrets of Rue Valley: An anomaly has trapped the area around the Rue Valley Motel in a time loop. Experiment with the main character’s actions each day until you have enough evidence to solve the mystery.
  • 2D Parallax Artstyle: Rue Valley has an instantly recognizable, visually appealing comic book aesthetic inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Disco Elysium.

What exactly makes this a RPG? It sounds like it's got more in common with an adventure game like Road 96

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Sometimes that can go too far though. Sheesh. My guess is that the time-loop gimmick has more to do with getting to reuse assets. Agreed that this appears to be pure distilled cringe, and probably not an RPG but a point and click adventure.

I actually quite enjoy the idea of a narrative-heavy RPG with a time-looping gimmick in a vacuum, but the trailer quashed my expectations completely. Personal journeys centered on "emotions" are quite difficult to write well and the narration on the thing is cringeworthy, which doesn't bode well. Eh, maybe I'll be surprised eventually, but for now this seems to be made for people who enjoy "talking about their feelings", but have never read an actual novel in their whole lives.

That "Disco-like" is a prime way to drop my interest in a game to zero Kelvin. With "lime loop" being a close second.

I would actually be interested in "Disco Elysium but Groundhog Day", but writing seems bad just from the trailer. Meh.

That would be insulting to adventure games. Something like Little Big Adventure shits on DE and all its clones.
Little Big Adventure is an adventure game? Because it has adventure in the title or what? Is Zelda 2 also an adventure game?

Thanks to the fine posters here, I didn't have to waste any time watching the trailer to know that this sucks. Keep up the good work.

Little Big Adventure is an adventure game? Because it has adventure in the title or what? Is Zelda 2 also an adventure game?

Back in the day games had gameplay other than selecting dialog options
Yeah, and adventure games had very specific point and click gameplay that was nothing like LBA, and often had a lot of selecting dialog options actually
