Shiny was a great developer. Starting from awesome Earthworm Jim Dave Perry who was always smacking others companies and was full of himself made move into 3d. While it wasn't as impressive as Tomb Raider, MDK provided the most funny and unexpected story with the mix of shooting and platform game. The chaingun is nice, especially the super version but the sniper rifle was the shining (pun intended) example of innovation. Different ammo choices, big zoom, and you can kill even tougher enemies so quick. Each level has so many elements that never repeat and after so many years it was nice to see the old comedy elements and locations. I used 3dfx glide wrapper because of issues with direct3d. Tommy Tallarico made impressive soundtrack that still holds nice.

First we need to test the performance.

The best option is to snipe enemies here. The fast one with the long health bars are really annoying when you are moving up.

That robots making mechanic "alerts" can be a nuissance later on. Here, we are entering the den of lions.

Better be quick here.

Amen. I played MDK sometime in the 1990s and I remember enjoying it, but for some reason I haven't touched it since then.

Well, the first level in MDK 2 plays (almost) exactly like MDK 1, but then there's the "WTF?"-moment when the next level loads up and you're controlling a hexapod canine with more guns than a Schwarzenegger action film.

I didn't know MDK2 wasn't held in as high regard as the first. I never played the first one when I was younger.

I'm not gonna say that MDK 2 is *worse* than MDK 1...but the prequel had consistency through its 5 levels. You were always Kurt, you were always in the suit and you always had the same gear - it was the level design that changed and grew.

MDK 2 has 3 protagonists that all play differently, and the game keeps switching between them. Kurt's levels play *somewhat* like MDK 1, while the dog's levels play like a generic shooter, and the scientist's levels played like some bizarre attempt at an adventure game.

It left the game without any real identity.

The worst thing about MDK2 was that it was a typical biowarean attempt at humour.
