The merits of Shadowrun Returns have already been discussed. The time to discuss it again would be when Berlin is released.

Grab the Codex by the pussy Codex USB, 2014 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Finished dead man's switch today. meh. I'll play it again when Berlin comes out, but I'm definitely not bothering with the mage class anymore. If anyone is considering this game, I would say you ought to wait until Berlin is released.

I got my physical goods today. Mini-reviewzzzz:

A lot of people have been getting broken USB drives, and I'm no exception, though I've reached the point where I can't give enough of a damn to bother them for a replacement. Sunk costs baby. My time is worth more than a thing I could just buy its near-equivalent of from somewhere else if I absolutely wanted it.

The game box isn't a traditional computer game box. It's a mini-board game box with the game and soundtrack discs in paper sleeves. The now-thoroughly-outdated version of Shadowrun Returns it contains doesn't have an installer on the disc; you have to copy the folder to your hard drive.

The Anthology book is far more horizontal than vertical for some reason. The binding feels cheap, like if I handle it too roughly it'll come apart. The art in the back is nice; I'll read the stories later.

The shirt fits comfortably, though that might change in the wash and I'll never ever wear it in public of course. This is a bathroom-scrubbing/room-dusting/dirty-job shirt.

Lamebrained Schemes have thoroughly convinced me to never buy anything physical from them again, though I'm amused and not upset. At least two other people got free games out of the deal, and it showed that Blaine found the idea of one-upping me far more appealing than actually doing so. Regrets: none.

Okay Brad, I'll marry you. But you're never putting it inside, we're never having kids and I'm cutting off my tits.

Is it still a victory for you ?

(that must be some forum I can't see)

Blade Runner is so beautiful. Why doesn't anyone make movies like that anymore?

What response do you have to players who feel that the campaign is overly linear for an RPG?

I refer to your earlier question. Harebrained Schemes is a small studio working with a small budget and made a good looking RPG with a classless character creation system, fun combat, and a decent story in about a year and priced it at only $20. The games we’re being compared to often have 10-100 times the budget and team size and sell for as much as $60.

But my most important response is that we invested enormous time, budget, and effort to create an editor that allows people to unlock their creativity and create their own stories which players can download from Steam at no extra charge.

I am very, very proud of the team and our accomplishment.

...

What are your hopes for how Shadowrun Returns will continue to grow in the coming months? What plans does the team at Harebrained Schemes have to add to the game, whether in the form of gameplay patches or new content?

We just released the iPad and Android tablet versions, and we’re supporting them and the PC and OSX versions of the game. The beta of our Linux version of the game is imminent. And our next update is almost complete. Beyond bug fixes, we’ve added some new features to the editor that our community of game masters should really like.

Most importantly, we’re working on our next story of roughly the same scope as Dead Man’s Switch, which takes place in Berlin. We’re very excited about it. Here are our main goals for the Berlin campaign:

• A more flexible main story arc – choose which runs to complete first, and which factions to complete objectives for

• More depth to the NPC runner characters

• New weapons, outfits, portraits, music, and enemies – including more magical creatures

• Improved Physical Adept gameplay – along with additions for some of the other existing archetypes

• A European city with a very different look, “vibe”, and cast of characters

• A story that highlights the compelling themes of the Shadowrun: Germany sourcebook

Shadowrun Returns had a core team of 25 but add interns and contractors to that and it jumps up to 64 (mostly artists, some more writers, a few composers, and a couple of testers). :M

Our original idea was to base our tactical combat on the original 1994 XCOM because we believed that our players would want that level of tactical control. As we started playing it, we found the pace to be slower than we were comfortable with, and with the additions of features like rigging and spirit summoning, it felt a bit “finicky”. That’s why we needed to embrace the newer, more streamlined approach.
yeahbuhwha

How is new xcom's tactical gameplay more streamlined?

I created a Jewish dwarf decker who was ostracized by his family and thrown out of the house. His family wasn’t upset that he was a dwarf or was “Awakened”. Their problem was that he had installed cybertech into his body a – they saw that as an affront against God.

Indeed, I've always wondered: if the game is a linear piece of turd, with laughable amount of content, despite receiving nearly 5 times the planned funding, then what were they planning to do, with the 400k they originally asked for? A text adventure?

Top-down (not isometric) iPhone RPG with very simple graphics.

Individual modders in their spare time were able to create non-linear modules in a month or two. Of course, they had to deal with HBS's garbage design, where the game will only save global variables and not scene variables (so anything you don't want to revert back when you enter the scene again has to be created as a global variable). I guess HBS was too lazy to deal with the mess they created. This seems to also be the reason they didn't have a save system (save a game in the OC, reload, all the enemies come back to life).

Good to see that they're finally realizing their earlier decisions were stupid, but I imagine it already cost them a lot of sales.
