Dragonfall is a pretty sweet game. It's in my top 3 (maybe 5) for RPGs of the last 10 years. And lest anyone shit their pants over that, remember that it is 2014. Which is terribly depressing but there it is, I guess.

Also, you forgot to add Fallout 3, Oblivion and Mass Effect 3 to the list :troll:

... what are the other four?

In no particular order:

1) FO:NV
2) Grimrock
3) DA:O
4) Dark Souls

I'm sure people will take issue with my list (especially DA:O, Codex's RPG of Year!) but I think it is a pretty solid representation. I guess I could swap some of those games out for others if someone made a convincing argument, though. For example, MOTB could replace Dark Souls, I could see that going either way.

What was the purpose of this post?
to show that there's been quite many varied rpgs in the last 10 years with something for everyone in them and all those "it's 2014, mostly shit came out in the last 10 years" talks are nostalgia colored bullshit.

Interesting, I hope this makes them some more $. Though modders will now have to decide whether to use DMS or DF as the main dependency, and potentially lose out on a lot of players who don't have DF (basically backers, or those who didn't buy the expansion for whatever reason) or DMS (those people who got DF director's cut and skipped DMS). The better option will probably be to use DF as the dependency base, since DMS-only people will have probably lost interest in the modding scene by now anyway.

I'd put DF into my personal top 5 of 2004-2014 as well, if we're talking pre-DivOS. Basically:
1] FO: NV
2] Dark Souls
3] DX: HR
4] VTM: Bloodlines
5] DF

Following that list would be Paper Sorcerer, DAO, and SRR (original). I don't have a DS so the EO games are right out... also, manually drawing maps doesn't sound like fun. I hated that crap 25 years ago when I was playing bard's tale on my c-64, I don't imagine using a stylus makes it any better!

edit: words are hard

Yep, makes it easily in the top 5 for me.
hm, i find that weird, because a6 was a much better game than dragonfall while very similar, and i wouldn't put it in my top 5 of the last 10 years... but to each his own.

The setting is cool and the writing was excellent. A6 isn't bad but art direction is worse and writing is worse. The combat in A6 is better. But only because of difficulty and more handmade encounters (the scripted encounters are hit or miss), otherwise SR combat is more interesting for me. And A6 has better party management and slightly better loot.

hmkays.

all backers get df dc for free and people who have dms but do not have df are probably not interested in playing anything sr anymore. who knows the dc might even allow them to sneak in some features that everybody has been asking for since forever...

Well, congratulation because you achieved the exact opposite effect. Half of those titles are rather bad or barely qualify as rpg (or not at all - Mount and Blade, WTF ?). Also you cant into basic mathematics, there are 11 years from 2004 to 2014, use your fingers if you dont' believe me, you will run short in 2013 not 2014 :D In addition, no one is saying that 2014 is bad so incuding that year was not only a mathematical error but also a strawman.
In fact, according to your own list, there is less than 1 decent non-action crpg per year between 2004 and 2013. Great years indeed...

Edit, i don't know your expectations but personally i expect at least 2-3 good crpg titles per year to not call such year. bad. Years 2014 and 2015 have a chance to deliver but we'll see.

Yes, it is on the same page as another true crpg classic: Star Control 2 (a propos, i love this game). :smug:
some people here define rpg via c&c, which is how sc2 got on there (at least i hope so).
there are 11 years from 2004 to 2014
i'll do it step by step so as not to confuse you:
1 year from middle 2014 to middle 2013
1 year to middle 2012, 2 years total
1 year to middle 2011, 3 years total
1 year to middle 2010, 4 years total
1 year to middle 2009, 5 years total
1 year to middle 2008, 6 years total
1 year to middle 2007 7 years total
1 year to middle 2006 8 years total
1 year to middle 2005 9 years total
1 more year to middle of 2004, 10 years total
bloodlines came out november 2004, kotor 2 in december.
