No offense but BN probably isn't the most in-the-loop guy at InXile.I have spoken toinXile peopleBrother None and they don't believe anybody there knew before yesterday, Fargo included.

That depends.
Fargo secured Van Buren (and mentioned it recently) for a reason. To make a Van Buren game he needs Avellone. Suddenly, Avellone leaves Obsidian. I bet VB will be the next inXile's Kickstarter and Avellone will be the lead designer.
That's the big problem. VanBuren was all about Caesar's Legion was it not? A lot of the ideas used in it went into New Vegas. That depends.

It seems debatable, to me, exactly how much the Van Buren property is extricable from the Fallout property, since Van Buren was a prototype for a Fallout game. What can you really do with 'Van Buren' if you don't have 'Fallout'? Make a post-apocalyptic game that teases an association with another franchise, but stop short of anything infringing? Why not just make Wasteland 3?
How well-positioned would inXile be to make an official follow-on game to Fallout 4, the way that Obsidian made New Vegas from Fallout 3?
In general, when people are making a transition, nobody confirms anything. They tell you 'we knew', in an hour everyone knows. You know how it is. Plus only the top people would know. Not asking whom you talked to, but unless it's Kevin Saunders...Would he tell anyone if he knew? IF it's a VB game, now is not the time to hype it.Fargo didn't know about Avellone's departure from Obsidian until very recently, apparently.

It could of course be a huge conspiracy, but I prefer to take them at their word.
Jaesun if MCA is hired by Bethesda will you be first in line to buy FO4 as a show of solidarity?
MCA is never going to work for Bethesda.
EVEN if that happened I will still never buy/play any of Bethesda's horrible action shit. EVEN if MCA worked on it.
That depends.

Yet Fargo secured the rights for some reasons, so he believes there is enough there for a unique game, which is a smart move. Everyone knows about Van Buren. So he announces it, he's going to be the guy who saved ANOTHER awesome game (and we all know that it was going to be awesome because it's a dream game and when it comes to selling dreams, Fargo is by far the best). So the media is going to be all over and it's going to be WL2 frenzy all over again. That's the big problem. VanBuren was all about Caesar's Legion was it not? A lot of the ideas used in it went into New Vegas. That depends.

Jason D Anderson is at Turtle RockYeah, Van Buren at inXile seems like the most likely result of all of this.
Bethesda is out of question, the only real alternative is leaving the industry.
Jason D. Anderson is at inXile after all.
But Tim Cain is a Obsidian, so what the hell...
I don't know why anyone thinks Bethesda would want Chris Avellone. Fallout 3 won a best writing of the year award and made a lot of whole lot of money, and outside the Codex its banalshitboring good vs evil plot is regarded as a triumph of storytelling. Ask a typical member of Bethesda's target audience, and he'll tell you that Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim had good stories, but New Vegas was too complicated and just didn't feel like a Fallout game. Good writing doesn't contribute to an AAA game's success, if anything it's detrimental.
I never actually bought any New Vegas DLC. =(Jaesun if MCA is hired by Bethesda will you be first in line to buy FO4 as a show of solidarity?

I never actually finished that DLC. True story.
Indeed. You don't just up and leave a job unless you have something arranged. I doubt he's THAT wealthy.
Kickstarter money and retail sales are too very different business models, you should know.As stable as selling games online where you're dependent on the goodwill of gamers. Overall, WL2 was well received (second highest votes on the Codex, 85% on Steam, 81 on Metacritics). Fargo may not be good at managing a large publishing house, but he's good at hyping and promoting. From now on he can grab 3-4 mil on KS whenever he pleases, plus inXile will be stronger with every game - game they own, unlike Obsidian that gets paid to do the work and then gets nothing.
So yeah, I wouldn't worry about Fargo. He's in his element now.

I can't help thinking of the remark from Brian Fargo earlier this week that it was because of an idea Avellone had that he had decided to secure the Van Buren trademark
I don't think Obs needs Avellone right now and Avellone doesn't need Obs. Between Tim Cain (the systems guy) and Sawyer (the mechanics freak) I don't think they need a terrific creative lead right now.
I was indeed surprised to not see him at all in the Pillars of Eternity Documentary…
Excellent. Now if we can get rid of Josh Sawyer, Obsidian may once again become a development house instead of the Chris and Josh egotrip show.
Considering they've mostly done outsourced/contract work the last several years I doubt it's a fortune. That said, I don't know anything about MCA's personal life as far as whether he has wife/kids, etc. If he's single then it's obviously a lot easier to drift on savings. Still. He's a known quantity in the industry. Someone like him wouldn't just leave without having a reason.Indeed. You don't just up and leave a job unless you have something arranged. I've always wondered how much the owners of Obs actually make just from owning the place.
From Fargo's most recent interview, we know that what he identifies with the name Van Buren is MCA's ideas of a post-apoc game with rival parties, maybe player vs player. That's the big problem. VanBuren was all about Caesar's Legion was it not? A lot of the ideas used in it went into New Vegas.
So, maybe a (multiplayer) Fallout Tactics successor?Fargo's interview said:One of the eye-catching ideas Black Isle had for Van Buren was that the player would run into other players in the game world. You'd have a series of rivals that weren't necessarily enemies - more parties you would compete against, with different goals. They weren't necessarily evil, but they would have a different agenda. You would run into conflict with them over the course of the game.
New Vegas was a semi-sequel to Fallout 3, riding its coattails. For most players, Fallout 3 was the first Fallout game. And most of them seem to think that Fallout 3 had the better story.I don't know why anyone thinks Bethesda would want Chris Avellone. Fallout 3 won a best writing of the year award and made a lot of whole lot of money, and outside the Codex its banalshitboring good vs evil plot is regarded as a triumph of storytelling. Didn't really hurt New Vegas though, it sold more than Fallout 3. Avellone also wasn't responsible for New Vegas, he was responsible for 3 self-contained DLCs, and Bethesda really likes making these.
