I wonder if there's going to be a "dehaze" option included.

"It's been a long ride, but the end is in sight." I hope that won't turn out to be a more sinister prediction than they'd intended. It genuinely looks pretty cool as remaster projects go, but there've been increasing rumours of late regarding Bethesda's own Oblivion remaster, lots of speculation about it possibly landing this year:

It's supposed to be straight-up Oblivion running with an extra layer of UE5 graphics, which would present tradeoffs against something like Skyblivion, and that's precisely the problem - would The Todd suffer competition? Or is there a sadistic lawyer already watching all these Skyblivion updates, just waiting for the progress bar to hit 99.9% before he hits Send on that C&D? Hell, it'd probably start with "Stop right there, criminal scum!"

There are two problems with Oblivion remaster:

1) You can't polish a turd.

2) The gaming industry doesn't have a good history when it comes to doing remasters, so it is best to be vary.

I've been thinking about that as well. Didn't Bethesda release an update for Fallout 4 just days before that Fallout London mod was supposed to come out, forcing the mod team to postpone the release? Todd would definitely come up with something, DMCA takedown because of music or something like that.

Yeah, but I suspect that's more negligence and incompetence (not only did the NG patch not add any value, it actually broke new shit with the game and I ain't just talking about modding) rather than intentional sabotage, FOLON didn't stand to cost Bethesda any money, quite the opposite. In this case, however, it's conceivable some gamers might just pick Skyblivion over the official remaster. A minority of PC players, to be sure, but possibly enough to dent the bottom line.

If the remaster is mechanically faithful to Oblivion (doesn't do anything about the level scaling), then it's automatically worthless because you won't be able to mod it (UE5).

Per the video I linked, the implementation might be the base game running on Bethesda's Creation Engine with UE5 handling the graphics layer, though I have no idea where exactly that delineation is. If that's the case, game mechanics should be moddable, although the community would have to start over since this would almost certainly be an updated 64-bit version of the CE, whereas visual mods would be... fuck knows.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Skyblivion's not meant to be just a straight port of Oblivion, but an improvement of it, in terms of both mechanics and content (e.g. they've been handcrafting new dungeons to extend Oblivion's repetitive roster).

That's why I mentioned there'd be tradeoffs - Skyblivion would probably still look dated compared to a UE5 Oblivion, depending on what Todd's actually done, but it may well boast better gameplay and better mod support. That and the pricing, obviously.

My guess is that the remaster will be similar to GTA "definitive" editions where the graphical overhaul will be outsourced to some pajeets who will use AI to upscale most textures and add some new lighting, resulting in a hideous abomination with incongruous art style, exactly like those GTA remasters. In that case, Skyblivion will look and feel better. But just as Skyblivion approaches release, Bethesda will issue a cease and desist letter and the project will be put on indefinite hold. Feel free to quote me in a year or so. :smug:

There will be no DMCA. Both versions will coexist, and sales will be boosted thanks to Skyblivion.
